Information for Staff E-mail Communication

Information Regarding WorkKeys • The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction recently

informed districts that WorkKeys will be given free of charge to all North Carolina 12th graders who are Career and Technical Education (CTE) completers (i.e., students who have completed four sequential CTE courses). Effective the 2012–13 school year, the WorkKeys is part of North Carolina’s school accountability program.

• The WorkKeys system from ACT is being used in high schools across

the state and throughout the country to help ensure that students have the skills they need to be college and career ready. WorkKeys provides important information no matter what type of skilled or professional career a student plans to pursue after high school. They are awarded at four levels—Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum—based on the scores an individual achieves on three WorkKeys tests: Applied Mathematics, Locating Information, and Reading for Information.

Making the Connection through 4-Year Plans

Programs of Study helps to align middle and high school courses with post-secondary opportunities to include certifications, colleges, careers, salary and job-outlook. When each school system creates their Programs of Study, they align the career opportunities and post-secondary opportunities with their individual communities. Create posters to display in various classrooms. Students have the opportunity to take up to 32 credits. Core classes are 20 credits which leaves 12 credits for CTE, General Electives, WBL, AP and CCP courses. Students have the opportunity to complete more than one cluster area and should be encouraged to do so. Students who are interested in the military should also explore a career cluster because they will need to have a job in the military.

Individualized Career Plans

Source: Scotland County Schools CTE

cgoins
Sticky Note
Students can then develop individualized career plans based on their individual career goals and plans of study to include middle, high, postsecondary, and career opportunities. Allow students to compare colleges such as 2-year vs 4-year universities. For example on this plan, the student compared UNC-Chapel Hill with Fayetteville Technical Community College for a degree in Dental Hygiene. You will notice that the average pay for a Dental Hygienist is about the same, but there is an increase in tuition cost of up to $60,000 for a 4-year degree vs a 2-year degree. This is information that should be shared with parents to illustrate the long-term cost effects to their child's education and career goals.
