    MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL

"It can happen. It does happen.

But it can't happen if you quit." Lauren Dane.

We are what we repeatedly do.

Excellence then is not an act, but a habit. Aristotle

It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank t

last years editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year.

Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academexcellence and continuous improvement.

I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners asupported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learni

and instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meeti

    the needs of all students.

It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order

achieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and looforward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead.

The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is looki

forward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken

this direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teacheare committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and pl

the role of facilitator as well as role model to our students.

The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positi

challenges. At Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on holist

    needs of our students.

I am confident that the students of GNIPST will recognize all the possibilities, take full advantage of t

opportunities and meet the challenges with purpose and determination.

Excellence in Education is not a final destination, it is a continuous walk. I welcome you to join us

    HISTORICAL ARTICLE

    Gene Shoemaker

Gene Shoemaker was an astrogeologist. In fact, he was the very firstastrogeologist.

He is one of the very few people to have established a new scientific

    discipline.

    Significant Events

proved to a skeptical scientific community that some of Earths largecraters had been caused by collisions with asteroids and comets, rather than Earths own volcanic activity.

was the main mind behind the development of planetary impactscience.

proposed in 1963 that microscopic life forms could travel from oneplanet to another on rocks blasted out into space by asteroidimpacts.

made a multi-year study of earth-crossing comets and asteroids, which led to the discovery of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9. This cometcollided spectacularly with Jupiter, the first such collision ever seenby scientists.

discovered about 30 comets. His wife Carolyn discovered another30 or so. In their later years, they worked together in what Genedescribed as Mom and Pop scientific research.

had hoped to travel to the moon in the 1960s as a geologist, buthealth issues intervened. Instead, he selected and trained NASAastronauts for lunar field-work.

was the principal investigator in the Apollo 11 missions LunarGeology Experiment Apollo 11 was the one that put NeilArmstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the moon.

was also a live TV commentator for CBS News on the Apollo 11mission.

told people that missing out on a moon landing was the biggestdisappointment of his life.

traveled to the moon in the end. He is currently (2014) the onlyperson in history whose funeral ashes have been taken to the moon.

    Early Life and Education

Eugene Merle Shoemaker was born in Los Angeles, California onApril 28, 1928.

His parents were both college educated. His father worked in avariety of occupations including teaching and farming. His mother

was a teacher. As a child, he was fascinated and passionate about rocks andminerals, which he collected. He was particularly interested inuranium minerals and their radioactivity.

Gene Shoemaker graduated from high school on his sixteenthbirthday. He had earned a masters degree in geology from theCalifornia Institute of Technology by the age of 20. He became ateaching assistant in his final year, and was younger than most of thepeople he taught.

After Caltech, he joined the US Geological Survey.

Shoemaker was 32 years old when, in 1960, he was awarded a Ph.D.by Princeton University for his thesis about the impact mechanics ofthe Barrington Crater, which proved that the crater had been caused

by an asteroid or comet impact, rather than volcanic activity. Locallegends about the crater had been proved right!

Shoemakers proof lay in the structural similarities he found between

the Barrington Crater and nuclear weapons testing sites, includinghis discovery of the mineral coesite in the crater. This mineral canonly form when quartz rock is shocked by enormous pressures andtemperatures.

This was the first proof that any crater on Earth has anextraterrestrial origin.

For a long while, nobody believed me, but eventually I convincedthem, Shoemaker said.

Not content with proving the impact origin of craters on Earth, hesoon went on to establish the impact origin of the Copernicus crateron the moon.

    Astrogeology/Planetary Science

In 1961 Gene Shoemaker started up the US Geological SurveysAstrogeology Center in Flagstaff, Arizona and was its first director. The main work was mapping the moon in preparation for landings.

Shoemaker himself was slotted to go to the moon, but an issue withAddisons disease meant he couldnt go. Instead, he trained HarrisonSchmitt for the job.

    Honors

Gene Shoemaker was awarded the Wetherill Medal of the FranklinInstitute in 1965, G.K. Gilbert Award of the Geological Society ofAmerica in 1983, National Medal of Science in 1992, the WilliamBowie Medal in 1996, the NASA Exceptional Scientific AchievementMedal in 1996, and the James Craig Watson Medal in 1998.

    The End

Gene Shoemakers life was cut short when, on July 18, 1997, aged 69,he was killed in a car crash in the vast center of Australia, in the

Jupiter. His wife and co-worker, Carolyn, survived the crash withinjuries. Some of his funeral ashes were onboard when, with itsmission complete, NASAs Lunar Prospector Orbiter crashed into acrater near the moons south pole, on July 31, 1999. The crater is nowcalled Shoemaker Crater.

    NEWS UPDATE

New doubts on Zika as cause of microcephaly:

(24thJune, 2016)Brazil's microcephaly epidemic continues to pose a mystery -- ifZika is the culprit, why are there no similar epidemics in othercountries also hit hard by the virus? In Brazil, the microcephalyrate soared with more than 1,500 confirmed cases. But inColombia, a recent study of nearly 12,000 pregnant womeninfected with Zika found zero microcephaly cases. If Zika is toblame for microcephaly, where are the missing cases.

Primary care visits result in more colon cancerscreening, better followups: (24thJune, 2016)People who visit their primary care physicians are more likely toget potentially life-saving colon cancer screenings and follow upon abnormal stool blood test results -- even in health systems thatheavily promote mail-in home stool blood tests that don't requirea doctor visit, a study shows.

Beneficial bacteria may protect breasts fromcancer: (24thJune, 2016)Bacteria that have the potential to abet breast cancer are presentin the breasts of cancer patients, while beneficial bacteria are moreabundant in healthy breasts, where they may actually beprotecting women from cancer, according a study. These findings

    Regenerative medicine offering new treatment

    for bronchopleural fistulas: (24th

June, 2016)For the first time in human application, researchers successfullyclosed an open wound on the upper chest caused by postoperativecomplications of lung removal. The protocol and approach werebased on an ongoing trial investigating this method to treat analfistulas in Crohn's disease.

Starving stem cells may enable scientists to

build better blood vessels: (24thJune, 2016)Researchers have uncovered how changes in metabolism of humanembryonic stem cells help coax them to mature into specific celltypes -- and may improve their function in engineered organs ortissues, report researchers.

    Aggressiveness of acute myeloid leukemia

elucidated: (24thJune, 2016)Scientists have discovered why acute leukemias with the same

genetic abnormality vary in their aggressiveness based on theircellular origin. They found that the cancer inducing alteration isparticularly devastating if it occurs in early hematopoietic stemcells expressing certain genes involved in cell migration and tissueinvasion. These findings should now make it possible to classifypatients into more clearly defined groups, to adapt treatment, andhopefully also to develop personalized therapeutic strategies forthe future.

Analysis of genetic repeats suggests role for

DNA instability in schizophrenia: (24th June,

patients than in controls. Patients also showed different diseaseseverity, which appears associated with the CNVs' number andvariable expressivity. These findings enabled the researchers topropose a genetic model of schizophrenia in which genomic

instability underlies disease development.Zika virus alerts may have prompted uptick in

abortion requests in Latin America: (22ndJune,

2016)Pregnant women in Latin American countries were more likely toseek an abortion after receiving health alerts about Zika virus, according to a study co-authored by Princeton University. The

findings highlight the need for Latin American women to haveaccess to safe and legal reproductive options, especially as Zikacontinues to spread.

FDA approves vaccine to prevent cholera fortravelers

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved Vaxchora, avaccine for the prevention of cholera caused by serogroup O1 inadults 18 through 64 years of age traveling to cholera-affected areas.Vaxchora is the only FDA-approved vaccine for the prevention ofcholera.

Cholera, a disease caused byVibrio cholerae

bacteria, is acquired byingesting contaminated water or food and causes a watery diarrheathat can range from mild to extremely severe. Often the infection ismild; however, severe cholera is characterized by profuse diarrheaand vomiting, leading to dehydration. It is potentially life threateningif treatment with antibiotics and fluid replacement is not initiated

promptly. According to the World Health Organization, serogroupO1 is the predominant cause of cholera globally.

The approval of Vaxchora represents a significant addition to the

cholera-prevention measures currently recommended by the Centersfor Disease Control and Prevention for travelers to cholera-affectedregions, said Peter Marks, M.D., Ph.D., director of the FDAs Centerfor Biologics Evaluation and Research.

While cholera is rare in the U.S., travelers to parts of the world withinadequate water and sewage treatment and poor sanitation are atrisk for infection. Travelers to cholera-affected areas have relied onpreventive strategies recommended by the CDC to protect

themselves against cholera, including safe food and water practicesand frequent hand washing.

Vaxchora is a live, weakened vaccine that is taken as a single, oralliquid dose of approximately three fluid ounces at least 10 daysbefore travel to a cholera-affected area.

Vaxchoras efficacy was demonstrated in a randomized, placebo-controlled human challenge study of 197 U.S. volunteers from 18

through 45 years of age. Of the 197 volunteers, 68 Vaxchorarecipients and 66 placebo recipients were challenged by oralingestion of Vibrio cholerae, the bacterium that causes cholera.Vaxchora efficacy was 90 percent among those challenged 10 daysafter vaccination and 80 percent among those challenged threemonths after vaccination. The study included provisions foradministration of antibiotics and fluid replacement in symptomaticparticipants. To prevent transmission of cholera into the community,

the study included provisions for administration of antibiotics toparticipants not developing symptoms.

Two placebo-controlled studies to assess the immune systemsresponse to the vaccine were also conducted in the U.S. andAustralia in adults 18 through 64 years of age. In the 18 through 45year age group, 93 percent of Vaxchora recipients produced

antibodies indicative of protection against cholera. In the 46 through64 years age group, 90 percent produced antibodies indicative ofprotection against cholera. The effectiveness of Vaxchora has notbeen established in persons living in cholera-affected areas.

The safety of Vaxchora was evaluated in adults 18 through 64 yearsof age in four randomized, placebo-controlled, multicenter clinicaltrials; 3,235 study participants received Vaxchora and 562 received aplacebo. The most common adverse reactions reported by Vaxchorarecipients were tiredness, headache, abdominal pain,nausea/vomiting, lack of appetite and diarrhea.

The FDA granted the Vaxchora applicationfast trackdesignation

andpriority reviewstatus. These are distinct programs intended tofacilitate and expedite the development and review of medicalproducts that address a serious or life-threatening condition. Inaddition, the FDA awarded the manufacturer of Vaxchora a tropicaldisease priority review voucher, under a provision included in theFood and Drug Administration Amendments Act of 2007. Thisprovision aims to encourage the development of new drugs andbiological products for the prevention and treatment of certain

tropical diseases.Vaxchora is manufactured by PaxVax Bermuda Ltd., located inHamilton, Bermuda.

The FDA, an agency within the U.S. Department of Health andHuman Services, protects the public health by assuring the safety, effectiveness, and security of human and veterinary drugs, vaccinesand other biological products for human use, and medical devices. The agency also is responsible for the safety and security of ournations food supply, cosmetics, dietary supplements, products thatgive off electronic radiation, and for regulating tobacco products.
