It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank t

last year’s editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year.

Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academexcellence and continuous improvement.

I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners asupported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learni

and instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meeti

the needs of all students.

It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order

achieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and looforward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead.

The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is looki

forward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken

this direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teacheare committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and pl

the role of facilitator as well as role model to our students.

The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positi

and longitude. He marked the equator and its size, considered thesize of the polar zones and how far these zones were from thetropics. (Evidently, the Ancient Greeks knew a lot about our planet!)

• He invented geography. Today we still use the word he invented for this new discipline. (‘Geo’ was Greek for ‘Earth’ and ‘graphy’meant ‘field of study.’)

• He produced a timeline recording all of the achievements of science since the time the Greeks had laid siege to Troy.

• He was the first person to explain why the River Nile flooded every year – i.e. that heavy, seasonal rains fall near the source of theriver, resulting in an annual flood in Egypt.

• He rejected the commonly held view that people could be divided into ‘Greeks’ and ‘Barbarians.’ He held that people should be judgedas individuals on their good and bad qualities.

A Rounded Character

Not restricting himself to science, Eratosthenes excelled at nearly allthings intellectual. He wrote books on philosophy, geography,mathematics, astronomy, history, comedy, and also wrote poetry.

This all-round knowledge made him a shoe-in for one very special job. That job was the most prestigious role an academic could enjoyin Ancient Greece – Director of the Library of Alexandria, thegreatest intellectual institution of the ancient world.

The Library of Alexandria is said to have contained over half amillion books in scroll form. It was the place the greatest scientists,mathematicians, philosophers, poets, and dramatists gathered to talk

about their intellectual quests. The Library had lecture halls andmeeting rooms. Today, we would call it a great university.

Eratosthenes had his fans and his critics. Both seemed to have usedthe same nicknames for him. Eratosthenes had two nicknames weknow about. One of these was ‘Beta’ the second letter of the Greekalphabet. This was because Eratosthenes, although he knew about

everything, was not the absolute best at anything. ‘Beta’ could beused as an insult or a compliment.

The other nickname he was given was ‘the pentathlete.’ The meaning

is similar to Beta, in that a pentathlete has to be very good at fivedifferent sports, but will probably not be a champion in any of theindividual sports.

Eratosthenes called himself ‘philologos’ – ‘lover of learning.’

The greatest minds of Greece would send their work to Eratosthenesas papyrus scrolls. Ever curious, Eratosthenes would take time toread many of these before his assistants cataloged them.

His friend, the great Archimedes, entrusted him with an enormouslyimportant treatise called The Method. In addition to containing themost advanced mathematics the world had ever seen, The Method givesus some clues about Eratosthenes’ interests. Archimedes writes(loosely translated):

“Since I know you care about your work, are an excellent teacher ofphilosophy, and greatly interested in mathematical investigations, Ithought I’d let you know about my special method. The method will

enable you to use mechanics to see the answers to mathematicalquestions…”

And so we learn that Eratosthenes is a fantastic teacher, as well as anintellectual. (Not all intellectuals are good teachers!)

Of course, Eratosthenes did not only read about great work carriedout by other people. He did some great work himself.

We know him best for two important achievements: producing an

accurate estimate of how big Earth is; and devising a method to findprime numbers.

Unfortunately, other than a few scraps, little remains ofEratosthenes’ original work. We usually have to rely on comments

from people who were around at the time and in the following fewcenturies to get an idea of what Eratosthenes wrote.

How Big is Planet Earth?

As Director of the Library of Alexandria, Eratosthenes had theclosest thing in the ancient world to a modern internet searchengine. Everything that had been learned about the world by theGreeks – and that was a lot – was within his reach.

Eratosthenes had learned that at midday, on the longest day of theyear, walls in the city of Syene cast no shadows, because the sun wasdirectly overhead. He could see with his own eyes in Alexandria thatthere were small shadows at midday on the longest day.

Syene was more-or-less due south of Alexandria, therefore the angleof the shadow must mean something. What did it mean?

Eratosthenes reasoned that if:

1. you make the assumption that planet Earth is a sphere2. the sun’s rays are parallel to one another when they reach Earth3. you measure the angle of the shadow in Alexandria when there isno shadow in Syene4. you know the distance between Alexandria and Syene

then, you could calculate how big Earth is.

The Calculation

On the diagram above, the angle z is the angle of shadowEratosthenes found in Alexandria. He found it was one-fiftieth of awhole circle.

Using a little simple Euclidean geometry, he knew that by drawing aline downward from each wall to the center of the earth, they wouldform the same angle z.

This meant that the distance from Syene to Alexandria was one-fiftieth of the distance all the way around planet Earth.

His maps told Eratosthenes that the distance from Alexandria toSyene was 5000 stades. Eratosthenes multiplied 50 x 5000 to get ananswer of 250,000 stades for Earth’s circumference. He then added acorrection of 2000 stades (lacking his original work, we don’t know

why he did this) and concluded that:

Earth’s circumference is eq ual to 252,000 stades

All we need to do now is convert stades to modern units. (Somethings are easier said than done!)

The End of Eratosthenes

Legend has it that Eratosthenes went blind and died by starving

himself when he was 80 to 82 years old.

Unveiling the grammar of biological cells: (22nd

April, 2016)Cells in the body exchange a number of signals with their

surroundings. Deficient signal pathways may adversely affect thefunction of cells and cause diseases. However, we hardly knowmore than the vocabulary of cellular language. It is unknown howthe “words” are combined in “sentences”. If cell grammar wasknown, complex processes in cells might be understood.Researchers have now presented a method to decode the grammarof cell signals.

Older patients are not too old to benefit from

Tapping a chemical we already make could

enhance T-cell production: (21st April, 2016)Researchers report that a fatty chemical naturally found indamaged tissues can induce an unexpected kind of immuneresponse, causing immune cells to go into a 'hyperactive' state thatis highly effective at rallying infection-fighting T-cells. Thefindings could enhance vaccines and make them much moreeffective.

Targeted missiles against aggressive cancercells: (20th April, 2016)Targeted missiles that can enter cancer cells and deliver lethal celltoxins without harming surrounding healthy tissue. This has beena long-standing vision in cancer research, but it has proveddifficult to accomplish. A research group has now taken somecrucial steps in this direction.

Rapid assessment approach finds TKM-130803

ineffective at the dose given: (19th April, 2016)Results from a trial of the experimental anti-Ebola drug TKM-

130803 have just been published. Using a novel approach designedto get rapid indications of a drug's effectiveness, the trial showedthat at the dose given the drug did not improve survival comparedto historic controls.

ZepatierZepatier contains a combination of elbasvir and grazoprevir. Elbasvirand grazoprevir are antiviral medicines that prevent hepatitis C(HCV) from multiplying in your body.

Zepatier is used to treat chronic hepatitis Cgenotype 1 or 4 in adults.This medicine is sometimes given together with another drug calledribavirin (Copegus, Rebetol, Moderiba, Ribasphere).

Zepatier is used only if your HCV has a specific genetic marker, forwhich your doctor will test.

One should not use Zepatier if you have moderate or severe liverdisease.

Serious drug interactions can occur when certain medicines are usedtogether with elbasvir and grazoprevir. Tell each of your healthcareproviders about all medicines you use now, and any medicine you

start or stop using. You should not use Zepatier if you are allergic toelbasvir or grazoprevir, or if you have:

• moderate or severe liver disease.

Some medicines can cause unwanted or dangerous effects when usedwith elbasvir and grazoprevir. Your doctor may need to change yourtreatment plan if you use any of the following drugs:

•

cyclosporine;• rifampin;

• St. John's wort;

• HIV or AIDS medication - atazanavir, darunavir, efavirenz,lopinavir, saquinavir, tipranavir; or

• seizure medicine - carbamazepine, phenytoin.

To make sure Zepatier is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:

•

liver problems other than hepatitis, or if you have had a livertransplant;

• HIV (human immunodeficiency virus); or

• if you are waiting to have a liver transplant.

It is not known whether Zepatier will harm an unborn baby.Elbasvir and grazoprevir is sometimes used in combination withribavirin.Ribavirin can cause birth defects or death in an unbornbaby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become

pregnant. You may need to have a negative pregnancy test beforeusing these medications together, and every month during yourtreatment.

• If you are a woman, do not use Zepatier with ribavirin if you arepregnant.

• If you are a man, do not use this drug combination if your sexualpartner is pregnant. An unborn baby could also be harmed if a manfathers the child while he is taking ribavirin.

• Use at least 2 effective forms of non-hormonal birth control(condom, diaphragm with spermicide) while either sexual partneris using these medications together. Keep using 2 forms of birthcontrol for at least 6 months after treatment ends. Tell your doctorright away if a pregnancy occurs while either the mother or thefather is using Zepatier with ribavirin.

It is not known whether elbasvir and grazoprevir passes into breastmilk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you arebreast-feeding a baby.

Zepatier is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old.Take Zepatier exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow alldirections on your prescription label. Do not use this medicine inlarger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

Your doctor will perform blood tests to make sure you do not haveconditions that would prevent you from safely using Zepatier.

You may take Zepatier with or without food.

Take the medicine at the same time each day.

Read the medication guide or patient instructions provided witheach medication. Do not change your doses or medication schedulewithout your doctor's advice. Every person with HCV should remainunder the care of a doctor.

While using Zepatier, you may need frequent blood tests to check

your liver function.

Store Zepatier at room temperature away from moisture and heat.Keep each tablet in the foil blister pack until you are ready to take it.

Dosing information

Usual Adult Dose of Zepatier for Chronic Hepatitis C:

1 tablet orally once a day

Recommended Regimen and Duration of Therapy: -Genotype 1a, therapy-naive or peginterferon alfa/ribavirin-experienced without baseline nonstructural protein 5A (NS5A)polymorphisms: Elbasvir-grazoprevir for 12 weeks-Genotype 1a, therapy-naive or peginterferon alfa/ribavirin-

ribavirin plus HCV NS3/4A protease inhibitor (e.g., boceprevir,simeprevir, telaprevir)-Optimal regimen and duration of therapy not established forpeginterferon alfa/ribavirin/HCV protease inhibitor-experiencedgenotype 1a-infected patients with at least 1 baseline NS5Aresistance-associated polymorphism at positions 28, 30, 31, and 93. -The manufacturer product information should be consulted forrecommended ribavirin dose in patients with CrCl greater than 50

mL/min; the manufacturer product information for ribavirin shouldbe consulted for further information on ribavirin dosing, includingdose adjustments.

Use: With or without ribavirin, for the treatment of chronic HCVgenotypes 1 or 4 infection

Dose:

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed doseif it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extramedicine to make up the missed dose.

Side effects:

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reactionto Zepatier: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips,tongue, or throat.

Call your doctor at once if you have:

• nausea, vomiting, upper stomach pain, loss of appetite;

• tiredness;

• dark urine, clay-colored stools;

• jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); or

• (if you also take ribavirin) pale skin, feeling light-headed or shortof breath, rapid heart rate, trouble concentrating.

Common Zepatier side effects may include:

• headache;

• nausea, diarrhea;

• sleep problems (insomnia); or

• feeling tired.

On 12th January, 2016 the students and teachers of GNIPSTcelebrated youth day on the occasion of 153rd birth anniversary of

Swami Vivekananda.

A competition on Innovative and Scientific Modelling will be heldin Tech-Fest 2016. Only B.Pharm students are eligible for

participation. Last date for topic submission is 11

The general body meeting of APTI, Bengal Branch has been

conducted at GNIPST on 15th June, 2012. The program started with

a nice presentation by Dr. Pulok Kr. Mukherjee, School of Natural

Products, JU on the skill to write a good manuscript forpublication in impact journals. It was followed by nearly two hour

long discussion among more than thirty participants on different

aspects of pharmacy education. Five nonmember participants

applied for membership on that very day.
