Hort Therapy – December 2011

The holidays at a nursing home can be a special time or be very lonely. The Master Gardeners at Gloucester House and Walter Reed do their best to make the sea-son a bit brighter in early December and return again in January after a holiday break of their own. At Gloucester House, the residents made Christmas trees out of felt and then decorated them with tiny objects. This was followed with a snack of Christmas cookies and soda along with great conversation. At Walter Reed (where no food can be given to the residents), the mood was still festive. During the 1st week’s session, the ladies made Christmas ornaments out of old Christmas cards, cut so that six pieces formed a ball of cheer. The 2nd session of December is probably one of the favorites of the residents as the volunteers assemble a variety of stuffed animals and seasonal objects for the ladies. Because some items are prized more highly than others (and not wanting any cat fights) the names of the residents are placed in a hat and randomly drawn for selection from the pile of gifts. After the excitement of the Holiday giveaway, the group sang some Christmas carols and only got bogged down when no one knew what the 12th activity was in the “12 days of Christmas”. Happy Holidays!!

Gloucester County Schools Science Fair

The Gloucester Master Gardeners have agreed to help support the Gloucester County Schools Science Fair on the 16 January 2012, 8:30 to noon. What we would like is to have 5 or 6 people (minimum) that would be willing to judge the plant projects at the science fair. We currently have 43 projects in the plant cate-gory and may have a few more elementary projects added to the blend. The judges will have a judging rubric to use to assist in judging. They usually have judges work in pairs to judge projects. They will di-

vide the projects up and each pair would come up with the top two or three in their group. The judges would then get together to pick first, second and third place. Sometimes the group of judges also chooses some honorable mentions. We will also be setting up a themed information table as part of our education/support program. We will need help with manning this table. More detailed information to come at the monthly meeting.- Bill Blair
