Gloster's roots can be traced all the way back to West Africa in 1960, where a band of passionate entrepreneursand furniture makers took the first steps on a long journey. By the early 1970’s, increased demand and accessto plantation grown teak led us to move our factory to Indonesia. Today, the same passion, conviction and pridethat launched the Gloster brand, continues to fuel our business. We may live in a different world than the oneoccupied by our founders, but one thing remains the same - we are furniture makers whose sole focus is to

design and build the world’s finest outdoor furniture. Because we believe.

TEAK &PLANTATIONSThe benchmark hardwood for fine outdoor furniture for more than 700 years. With a beautiful, soft natural finish,every piece of Gloster teak originates from carefully managed plantations and is thoroughly inspected to ensurethat quality endures. A close-grained hardwood with a high natural oil content, teak is exceptionally hard wearing,highly resistant to rotting and almost impervious to the effects of sun, rain, frost or snow - the first and onlychoice of timber for outdoor furniture.

Gloster’s production of teak is characterised by our approach. We understand our resources and we know ourwood. We only harvest what we have planted ourselves, and every tree that is felled was placed in the soil byone of the Gloster plantation’s workers - workers whom we have known for a lifetime. A Gloster teak tree has alifecycle of at least 50 years - and our wood can always be traced back to its origin. We believe that ourcustomers must be able to trust us, so we treat the world, its resources and its people with respect. This is acore value at Gloster. Because it matters.

Gloster and fine craftsmanship go hand in hand. Our furniture is not the result of random mass production -human hands have created every rounded corner and every joint, and the quality of the furniture is the result ofour employees’ knowledge and skills. All of the craftsmen in our factories are proud of their ability to processwood and upholstery. They are craftsmen to their fingertips, and have worked with their trade for

years – exclusively for Gloster. We look after them and are proud of them.

Our customers must also be able to feel the link to themselves when they buy our furniture. There must be acommon history present, and a narrative of the life that we love to live. The furniture must speak a language thatwe understand - a language that awakens our curiosity. But we do not wish to stagnate in the past. We lookforward and outward, so the past and future merge into a bold present to which we can all relate.

OURDESIGNERSOf course, great manufacturing is wasted without great design. Gloster currently works with several world-renown designers to create timeless outdoor furniture. Once a concept is approved, designers work closely withthe development team at our factory to further refine their designs. And even in this digital age, we insist ourdesigners travel to and spend time at our factory so they get to know our people, our raw materials and our philosophy. Because we believe.

Depending on your perspective, the word‘atmosphere’ can conjure up a variety ofemotions. The freedom to move, to enjoyindependence or intimate moments - to be atone, whether alone or with those closest toyou. But atmosphere also buzzes with chatterand laughter and dancing light - the sound ofgood times amongst family and friends.

For the new Gloster Atmosphere collection,Danish designer Cecilie Manz has drawn fromobserving couples, groups, friends and familiesinteracting in seating areas - sliding down lowin comfortable furniture, tucking up legs, restingside by side as stories are told and momentsare shared.

“This is why it felt natural” Cecilie says, “to lowerthe whole setting, to enhance and welcomethis feeling of comfort and quiet - when youwish to have slightly more relaxed moments,even a few centimetres in height makes asignificant difference. Sitting lower pulls you intoa familiar, soothing embrace - welcoming youto unwind and stay longer.”

Cecilie has intuitively embraced the emotionsbehind the design in a powerful mixture ofminimal, powder coated aluminium frames,generous boards of Gloster’s signature teakand cleverly designed self-supportingupholstered panels.

Cecilie says “The materials in a project shouldreflect the usage of the pieces. Aluminium andteak are great materials for outdoor spaces, thefinish of the metal is robust, and the solid teakgets a beautiful grey patina over time.Combined with the fabric options, the paletteis subtle and harmonious, revolving aroundmuted, sophisticated tones.

When asked if she can summarise hercollection Cecilie smiles before answering; “It’squite simple really… the name is a reflection ofthe situation. It’s all about creatingatmosphere.”

Graduating from the School of Architecture inAarhus, Denmark in 1986, Povl Eskildsen isGloster’s longest serving designer. His firstmeeting with Gloster was during a furniture fairin Copenhagen in 1992 where he presentedthe iconic Weston Folding Chair. Unlike otherfolding chairs of the time, Povl had designedthe Weston with innovative lumbar support inthe back and using a different folding principle,to keep the front of the seat visible when foldedand with a simple, integrated handle used forfolding and carrying the chair.

Following the success of Weston, which at itspeak sold over 20,000 pieces per year, in 1995Povl went on to add the Madison collection -the first step towards the low, lounge typeseating so evident today. In the same year Povldesigned Kingston - one of the first trulycomfortable and practical outdoor teak diningchars. The idea was to make a lightweight armchair that both saved teak and also allowedpeople to easily move the chair around. Withonly a minor correction on the prototype, thecollection went into production and became aninstant success.

Povl’s ability to incorporate exceptional comfortinto his designs without compromising thevisual aesthetic, marks him out amongst hispeers. Using a design language of classicScandinavian inspiration with a contemporarytwist, Povl has gone on to design many othercollections for Gloster in both teak and mixedmaterials over the past 24 years, racking upmore 50 trips to Gloster’s manufacturing site inIndonesia in the process. For 2017, the iconicWeston design has been brought up-to-datewithin the Voyager collection, and further iconicdesigns such as Dansk, Maze and Havanacontinue Povl’s legacy into the new millennium.

NATURAL FINISH TEAKTeak’s tight grain and high oil content make itexceptionally resistant to the elements. AtGloster, we use only the finest plantation grownteak, which is carefully nurtured an average of 60years before harvesting. After more than 50 yearsand 10 million pieces of furniture, we have seenour responsible forestry practices not only servethe environment but also contribute to thegrowth of a superior lumber product.

POWDER COATED ALUMINIUM& STAINLESS STEELOur aluminium and powder coated stainless steelcollections both utilise an electro-staticallyapplied polyester powder coat finish, whichcompletely blankets the surface of each piece.The result is a deep, rich finish that is extremelydurable, corrosion resistant and virtuallyimpervious to moisture.

BRUSHED STAINLESS STEELCrafted from 304-grade stock, Gloster StainlessSteel represents the industry standard for qualityand design. The electropolished surface finish isboth corrosion-resistant and low-maintenance.Electropolishing is an electrochemical processwhereby the combination of an electrical currentand an acid removes much of the iron from thesurface, which leaves a lustrous, shiny surfaceand greatly enhanced corrosion resistance.

MAN-MADE WICKEROur entire Woven range is handcrafted usinglightweight, corrosion resistant powder coatedaluminium frames clad in the highest qualitymanufactured fibre. Soft to the touch, thisremarkable polyethylene material is completelyweatherproof and resistant to both tears andultraviolet light.

CERAMICGloster ceramic table tops are made from a solidceramic slab. Whilst the name suggests fragility,ceramic is actually harder than granite and isworkable using techniques normally applied toglass and natural stone. Ceramic table tops arechemical resistant, fireproof, UV and heatresistant. Water absorption is close to zero,therefore, table tops are also completely frost-proof and weather resistant.

OUTDOOR ROPE & STRAPGloster outdoor rope is made from a vinylcoated, high strength polyester yarn, braided intoa round rope profile of approximately 4mmdiameter. Straps are constructed from acrylicwhich is stabilised to minimise the effect of UVlight and is resistant to both mould and mildew.

THE TEAK STORYA luxury timber valued both for its beauty and strength, teak isindigenous to just four countries in the world - Burma, Laos,Thailand and India. However, due to excessive, unsustainablelogging over the past century, natural teak forests havepractically disappeared in all of these countries except forBurma.

Fortunately for the world, teak continues to flourish in plantationsthroughout South and Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America.It is from the well-managed, Indonesian plantations of state-owned Perum Perhutani, on the island of East Java, that wesource our teak.

We asked Molyono, the Sawmill Manager at our factory inIndonesia, to fill us in on a few interesting facts about theplantation teak we use to make our furniture…

What is so challenging about sourcing teak?

Teak is one of the most sought after timbers for high end furnitureproduction and as such there is a growing Global demand. Teakis not indigenous to Indonesia, it was brought to Indonesia bythe Buddhist monks in the 16th Century from Burma and it wasthen expanded into larger plantations by the Dutch to servicetheir ships plying the Dutch East Indies spice routes.

All Indonesian teak comes from plantation sources controlled byPerum Perhutani, the government body that controls all theplantations across Indonesia.

To ensure Gloster can obtain sufficient teak resource, we have ateam of 22 graders who spend the majority of their time travellingto over 30 different locations across Java to select the ideal logsfor our production. When selecting logs, our graders select thebest logs with the fewest natural defects. This way, we ensurewe obtain the best quality and yield recovery to maximise thisvaluable resource.

What’s the ideal conditions for a teak plantationin Indonesia?

Teak trees are not indigenous to Indonesia but the climaticconditions on Java are ideal for growing teak. Teak grows bestin sub-tropical conditions with temperatures ranging between 17- 43 Celsius and with an annual rain fall of 1250 - 3750mm. InJava, teak can grow on a variety of soils, but for the best results,it needs moderately fertile soil with humus rich top soil - wellaerated and free draining.

How would you characterise the teak wood ingeneral?

Teak is widely known as the most valuable tropical hardwoodand is mainly used for luxury furniture, ship and decorativebuilding purposes. With its high natural oil content, teakwithstands extreme weather conditions and is extremely stableonce properly seasoned by kiln drying.

How can you identify the perfect Indonesian teakwood in terms of age, appearance & oil content?

Symmetrical in shape with limited surface defects such as knotsand scaring. We look to choose logs that have a thin sapwoodlayer, which normally also goes hand in hand with a tree that hasgrown at a slower growth rate, meaning higher levels of densityand oil content. We only choose logs with a minimum age ofapproximately 35 years and upwards to ensure the timber is ofsufficient quality, whereas other companies use teak which isonly 10 years old and has little density or oil content.

Any other stories to tell about teak wood on Java?

Teak plantations are really no different than any other crop,except that the growing cycle is far longer. It can take anythingfrom 35 to 50 years for a teak tree to fully mature – Teak is anoble material and not something that can be rushed! The teakplantations in Java have been managed over countlessgenerations by Perum Perhutani, and today their plantationscomprise some 1.1 million hectares of teak, making them thelargest teak plantations in the entire world. Perum Perhutani alsoworks extensively with local communities during the rotationalplantation cycle, where they allow the villagers to plant cropsduring the spell period between harvests.

Contrary to popular belief, teak furniture does not require any special maintenance routine or any additionalprotection apart from occasional cleaning. Left to age naturally outside, teak will gradually change to a soft, silver-grey as the pigments in the surface layer of the wood begin to fade away. We recommend that you allow your teakfurniture to weather naturally this way and simply clean thoroughly once or twice a year with our cleaning products.Teak furniture may also benefit from an occasional light sanding to remove any raised grain and restore a smoothfinish to the surface.

Gloster outdoor covers are made from Weathermax, a heavy duty 100% solution dyed polyester material.

Weathermax is a performance cover material combining UV resistance, water resistance, breathability anddurability. The ability of the fabric to breathe is essential in reducing dampness, heat build-up and condensation.This in turn reduces the chances of problems such as mould or mildew becoming present on the furnitureunderneath. We also add a ‘breather’ layer of Dacron where the covers are in contact with flat teak parts liketable tops to further aid breathability.

With typical attention to detail, each cover is tailored to the unique dimensions of our product, ensuring a perfectfit. As well as covers for individual items, we also offer covers for all our stacking chairs, meaning that a singlecover can be used for a stack of four chairs. For several of our modular furniture collections, adjacent covers aredesigned to zip together so the entire set can be covered without the need to separate each item.

All covers feature either a strap-and-clip connector or elastic seams to ensure security against wind.
