Maine was well represented at the recent Seafood Expo North America in Boston with 15 companies exhibiting this year. Before the trade show, six dealers and processors from Maine participated in one-on-one buyers meetings: Calendar Islands Maine Lobster, Portland; Cape Seafood, Saco; Cozy Harbor, Portland; Greenhead Lobster, Stonington; Maine Coast, York; and Ready Seafood, Portland.

As a result of the one-on-one meetings, Maine companies reported a combined total of $4.8 million in actual and projected sales for the next six months and over $10 million in 12-month projected sales. The Maine dealers and processors met with buyers from Brazil, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam.

Working with Food Export USA, MITC coordinated the Buyers Mission (one-on-one meetings with international buyers), port tours, and education seminars; hosted in-coming delegations; and staffed a USA trade booth during the exhibition.

Dear MITC Members and Friends,

Maine International Trade Day preparations are in full swing, and we are excited to welcome Liz Graham, Vice President of Sales and Service at Wayfair, as our keynote

speaker this year. With plans to add over 700 jobs to the state over the next few years, Wayfair is a leader in business intelligence and strategic data analysis. See the cover article to learn more about Trade Day 2016 and our 20th Anniversary celebration!

Other items of interest include:

MITC coordinated booths and business matchmaking meetings at the JEC Composites Show in Paris (page 4) and Seafood Expo Global (page 5) were extremely successful for both our exporters and for our Invest in Maine business attraction program, with over $10.5 million in projected sales for the next year reported. Multiple investors from Europe and Asia will also visit Maine this spring as a result.

Companies looking to enter the Canadian market this year should contact Jeff Bennett to learn more about the Trade Mission to Canada (next page). We will be coordinating business matchmaking meet- ings for Maine exporters in one of Canada’s largest and fastest growing cities.

MITC’s Maine North Atlantic Development Office (MENADO) will be in the news throughout the summer as we prepare to host senior officials and heads of state for four Arctic Council meetings coming to Portland (page 4). A number of arts, cultural, and educational events are planned in conjunction with these closed meetings to inform the public regarding the importance and significance of the changing Arctic.

We look forward to seeing you at Trade Day 2016 on May 26th for what promises to be a thought provoking and fun-filled event!

Kind regards,

Janine Bisaillon-Cary,President

In September and October, Portland will be the site for several meetings of the Arctic Council, the leading in-tergovernmental forum promoting cooperation, coordination, and interaction among the Arctic states, Arctic Indigenous communities, and other Arctic inhabitants on common Arctic issues, in particular on issues of sustainable development and environmental protection in the Arctic.

Four Arctic Council meetings are scheduled in Portland, including a meeting of the Arctic Council’s Senior Arctic Officials. The closed meetings will attract upwards of 400 Arctic officials from around the world. The Arctic Council brings together representa-tives from the 8 Arctic Nations, as well as 6 organizations representing Arctic Indigenous peoples, 12 observer nations including China, India, South Korea, and Singapore, as well as a variety of non-governmental organizations.

Maine North Atlantic Development Office (MENADO) Director Dana Eidsness serves on the U.S. Dele-gation to the Arctic Council’s Protection of the Arctic Marine Environment (PAME) working group. She hopes to connect Maine experts with the important work of the forum.

“There are so many reasons why it makes sense for Maine to be part of these conversations,” Eidsness commented. “Maine has expertise to offer from our long history of Arctic exploration, our connection to Arctic markets through the Icelandic steamship company Eimskip, our development of innovative materials and products that withstand Arctic conditions, and our broad scientific and maritime com-munities, contributing everything from climate science to Arctic ecosystem studies, to ice navigation curriculum, and Search and Rescue Protocol development for the Arctic domain.”

MENADO has organized a Maine Host Committee to provide hospitality for the Arctic Council delegates, as well as arts, cultural, and educational events that will inform the public regarding the importance and significance of the changing Arctic.

The chairmanship of the Arctic Council rotates every two years among Arctic states. The first country to chair the Arctic Council was Canada (1996-1998), followed by the United States, Finland, Iceland, Russia, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. The second cycle of chairmanships began in 2013, as Canada assumed the Chairmanship for the second time. In April 2015, the second Canadian Chairmanship concluded, and the second Chairmanship of the United States (2015-2017) began. The next country to assume the Chairmanship will be Finland (2017-2019).

For information regarding Host Committee membership and sponsorship opportunities available through Maine’s Arctic Council Host Committee, contact Dana Eidsness ([email protected]).

Maine Shines at JEC World in ParisIn March, MITC/Invest in Maine hosted a booth at JEC World, the composites industry’s larg-est show, in Paris. The goals of participation were to showcase the state’s capacity, explore international markets, and seek out investment opportunities.

In addition to MITC/Invest in Maine, the delegation included the University of Maine’s Ad-vanced Structures and Composites Center, the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority, Tex Tech Industries, Cascon, Maine Marine Composites/Maine Composites Alliance, and Montalvo Corporation.

The collaboration between private companies and public organizations while at the show worked to promote the state’s unique proposition as an R&D and industry leader. Participants reported a total of $420,000 in projected sales over the next 12 months from the show.
