What is Global Handwashing Day?
Created by the Public-Private Partnership for Handwashing (PPPHW) in 2008, the driving theme for Global Handwashing Day is children and schools, and the main objectives of this global celebration are to:
2
• Foster and support a global and local culture of handwashing with soap.
• Shine a spotlight on the state of handwashing in each country.
• Raise awareness about the benefits of handwashing with soap.

63% of respondents said their celebration included the national or local government. The most common government partners mentioned were health and education ministries.
Organizations expanded Global Handwashing Day to a week or even month-long celebration of handwashing; providing more opportunities for handwashing activities and promotion.
GHD has traditionally targeted school children, but this year we saw new GHD audiences including healthcare facilities, churches and mosques, refugee camps, and prisons.
In 2010, some GHD celebrations led to the integration of handwashing into initiatives like immunization programs and maternal and child health activities.
