1 Introduction

1.1 What is this Report About?

This report is the result of an extensive survey drawn from Strategic Defence Intelligence’s (SDI) exclusive

panel of leading defense supplier industry companies and C- level respondents. As most of the countries

across the globe plan for defense budget cuts, defense industry suppliers are initiating new alternatives to

reduce their expenditure. This report provides the reader with a definitive analysis of emerging trends in the

global defense industry, and explores how key industry dynamics and collaborative projects are set to change

during 2013–2017. In addition, the report examines the intentions of C-level executives of defense supplier

industry related to top emerging and developed markets that will offer the strongest growth opportunities over

the next five years. Furthermore, this report identifies the key barriers and future investment opportunities

within the defense industry. Additionally, the report not only grants access to change in defense R&D budgets,

but also identifies the critical defense segments that will witness variations in budgets over 2013–2017.

The report also examines:

Emerging trends: identifies significant trends in Aftermarket Service Support and MRO, and the influential

factors that most affect the global defense industry

Future collaborative projects: tracks changes in the volume of collaborative projects in the defense

industry over the next two years

Mergers and acquisitions: demonstrates expectations surrounding merger and acquisition activity and core

influencing factors, in the face of budget cuts

Market-specific growth opportunities: uncovers the key growth regions that have the most defense

opportunities during 2013–2017

Leading concerns: assesses the key concerns for the defense industry over the next five years

R&D budgets: classifies the change in R&D budgets during 2013–2017

Investments: showcases key defense segments that will witness the highest investments over the next five

years

1.2 Definitions

Defense contractors: Defense contractors are broadly classified into military and civil contractors. Military

defense contractors provide products and services, which include military ships, vehicles, weaponry, and

electronic systems. Civil defense contractors primarily provide products and services to the internal security

departments of countries, including personal protection, response and security vehicles, explosive ordnance

or bomb disposal, and lethal and non-lethal weapons.

Other service providers: Other service provider companies are those that offer consulting services,

logistics, technical support, information technology, training and communications support.

Maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO): MRO involves the servicing of a defense system with the

objective of restoring it to a state where it can perform its intended function. It could be routine maintenance,

the replacement of faulty spare parts, or checking the entire system to ensure smooth functioning.

Initial operational capability (IOC): IOC is the minimum standard required by the Department of Defense

for flying operations, and involves the comprehensive assessment of self-sufficiency of the aircraft, trained

ground and aircrew, technical support staff, as well as weapons and spare parts.

Cyber warfare: This refers to various aspects of defending and attacking information and computer

networks in cyberspace, as well as denying an adversary’s ability to perform similar actions. Cyber warfare

attacks can disable official websites and networks, disrupt or disable essential services, steal or alter

classified data, and cripple financial systems.

Private Finance Initiative (PFI): The private finance initiative (PFI) involves the creation of "public–private

partnerships" by funding public infrastructure projects with private capital.

Aftermarket Service Support: An offering of services that help the existing buyers buy parts and

accessories used in the upkeep or enhancement of a previous purchase.

Parts Manufacturer Approval (PMA): PMA is a combined design and production approval constituted by

the Federal Aviation Administration for the modification and replacement of articles. It allows a manufacturer

to produce and sell these articles for installation on type certificated products.

Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM): OEM supplies equipment or products to other companies, which

are used as components for the development of other products sold under the brand name of the buyer

company.

Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance

(C4ISR): C4ISR refers to an information system employed by a military’s top command to direct its forces.

This system provides the military with information on various parameters associated with executing a

strategy during a military exercise. The parameters include reconnaissance and surveillance, troop positions,

inventory levels, and weather conditions. The communication system enables the transfer of images and

video captured by surveillance systems, and data and voice between the command and control center.

Additionally, the system aids in joint operations between the army, navy, and air force.

Unmanned Arial vehicle (UAV): UAV is a powered aerial vehicle that does not carry pilot or a human

operator; it can fly autonomously based on pre designed flight plan or can be guided from a remote location.

Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS): COTS are software or hardware products that are ready-made and

available for sale to the general public. These products are designed to be implemented easily into existing

systems without the need for customization.

Sequestration: The automatic initiation of spending cutbacks to manage the excess government spending

passed in annual budget resolution, which is not readjusted or taken back due to lack of consensus, is called

sequestration.

Small, medium and large-sized companies: Throughout the report, companies with turnovers of less than

US$100 million are classified as small companies, companies with turnover between US$100 million and

US$1 billion as medium-sized companies, and those with turnover of more than US$1 billion are classified

as large companies.
