From the Staff:There’s a reason why the winter holiday

season is called “the most wonderful time of the year” – people are more joyous, giving and caring for family and unknown friends. And nothing beats the warmth we feel being around those we love and participating in our area's traditions.

In our office, we thought long and hard about what approach we wanted when planning this year’s Gift Guide and decided on, “An Artful Holiday.” In addition to the tree lightings, parades and decorated main streets, each community has a slew of cul-tural events and activities taking place in the next month. We want to help make Santa’s big visit a little bit easier – and a little bit more creative.

The goal of the Gift Guide is to highlight the events, people and businesses that are available to you locally. We know there are many options for residents and customers

during the holiday season, but our friends who own the shops and restaurants in each community should be just as much a part of the holiday as our family visiting from out of town.

We’ve also put in the countless hours to make sure we have the most extensive com-munity calendar highlighting the best events taking place locally to keep you and your family entertained during the holidays. In the next six weeks, we have more than 150 events to keep the little ones and grownups busy having fun outside the house.

Saving you time on your shopping and planning, we hope, will help you make this the best holiday yet. Spend this time with friends and family, and enjoy what makes the holiday really special.

We wish you and your family a delight-ful holiday season filled with love, joy and peace.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays!

Editor’s note: Recipes are used with permission from the Purdue Extension Home-makers Holiday Ideas book, which is available for pur-chase for $5 at the Hamilton County 4-H Fairgrounds, 2003 Pleasant St., Noblesville

Let’s face it, with every-thing going on around the holidays time is a ma-jor factor in decision mak-ing. Here are a few quick recipes (submitted by local homemakers) you may try to switch up the normal holiday fare and keep you on schedule:

No-Fuss Caramel CornIngredients: 3 quarts popped corn, 1 cup packed brown sugar, 1/2 cup butter, 1/4 cup light corn syrup and 1/2 teaspoon baking soda.Instructions: Place popped corn in a large brown paper bag and set aside. Combine brown sugar, butter and corn syrup in a 2-quart glass bowl or casserole. Microwave on high for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring after each minute, until the mixture comes to a boil. Microwave 2 more minutes. Stir in the baking soda. Pour syrup mixture over popped corn in the bag. Close bag and shake well. Microwave on high for 1 1/2 minutes. Shake bag well. Microwave for 1 1/2 minutes more. Shake bag and pour caramelized popcorn into a large pan. Stir while it cools to separate the caramel corn kernels.

cup cider vinegar, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon ground mustard, 1/2 cup ketchup, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1 tablespoon horseradish, 1 garlic clove (optional) and 1/4 teaspoon hot pepper sauce.Instructions: Combine ingredients for meatballs and shape into small balls. Place on a greased cookie sheet. Bake uncovered at 350 degrees for 30 to 40 minutes. Mix sauce in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil stirring often. Reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 10 minutes. Add meatballs and stir gently to coat. Place meatballs in a crock pot set on warm to serve.Serving: Makes about 35 small meatballs.

Creole Green BeansCook time: 20 to 30 minutesIngredients: 6 slices bacon, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 3/4 cup chopped onion, 1/2 teaspoon pepper, 3/4 cup chopped green pepper, 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard, 2 tablespoons flour, one 16-ounce can peeled tomatoes (cut up), 2 table-spoons brown sugar, one 16-ounce can green beans (drained) and 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce.Instructions: Sauté bacon and remove from pan. Sauté onion and green pepper in bacon drippings. Add flour, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper and dry mustard to pan. Stirring constantly, add tomatoes and green beans. Heat through. Crumble bacon on top and serve. This may be made a day ahead and reheated in a 350 degree oven for 20 to 30 minutes or in a microwave.

Coca Cola CakePrep time: 25 minutesCook time: 30 minutesIngredients: 2 cups flour, 2 cups sugar, 1 teaspoon bak-ing soda, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, one 12-ounce can cola, 1 cup butter (cubed), 1/4 cup baking co-coa, 2 eggs, 1/2 cup buttermilk and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.

Glaze: one 12-ounce can cola, 1/2 cup butter (cubed), 1/4 cup baking cocoa and 4 cups powdered sugar, siftedInstructions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9-by-13-inch baking pan. In a large bowl, whisk the first five ingredients. In a small sauce pan combine cola, butter and cocoa. Bring just to a boil, stirring occasionally. Add to flour mixture, stirring just until moist. In a small bowl whisk eggs, butter and milk until blended. Add to cake mixture. Pour into pan and bake 30 minutes. Cool completely and glaze.

Horseradish MeatballsCook Time: 30 to 40 minutesIngredients: 2 eggs, 1 tablespoon prepared horseradish, 1/2 cup dry bread crumbs, 1/4 cup chopped green on-ions, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1 1/2 pounds ground beef and 1/2 pound ground pork or turkey. Sauce – 1/2 cup water, 1 small onion, finely chopped, 1/4

Pineapple Upside Down BiscuitsIngredients: 10-ounce can crushed pineapple, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup butter at room temperature, 8 mara-schino cherries and one package refrigerator biscuitsInstructions: Grease muffin tin. Strain pineapple, reserve juice. Combine pineapple, sugar and butter and mix well. Divide pineapple mixture among muffin cups. Place a cherry in the center of each muffin cup, making sure the cherry hits the bottom of the cup. Place 1 biscuit on top of sugar/pineapple mixture. Spoon 1 tablespoon of reserved pineapple juice over each biscuit. Bake 12 to 15 minutes or until golden. Cool 2 minutes and invert pan to release the biscuits. Serve warm.
