About Shoemart (SM)

From its humble beginnings as a shoe store established by founder Henry Sy Snr in 1958, Philippines’ Shoemart Corporation (SM) has grown to encompass the largest retail chain departmental stores in the country, accounting for more than 65% of the Philippine retail market. In 2006, SM opened the largest department store in Asia - SM Mall of Asia.

Website

www. sm-shoemart.com

Key Challenges

SM called on GHL Systems to provide an updated payment infrastructure -one that is robust, highly available, scalable and adaptable to their specific requirements. GHL Systems deployed a payment network based on the netAccess W1000 series of Network Access Controllers (NACs) that could cater for redundant links, high-availability load balanced controllers and links to their various acquiring banks.

The Solution

The solution called for two data centres that were geographically distant. SM had two data centres located in Roxas and Makati which are about 15 km apart. These data centres became the central communications hubs. The data centres are linked redundantly by two high-speed leased lines - provided by two separate telecommunications providers. In each of the data centres are five netAccess W1000 NACs to handle the routing of transactions to the banks.

The system is configured to share the load evenly between the two data centres. In addition to being load balanced, the

system is also highly redundant with links to their banks duplicated on each site. In the event that one of the data centres is incapacitated, the SM payment infrastructure will be able to handle the full load of the entire organization.

Availability & Scalability

With the netAccess W1000, the expanded and enhanced system was able to cater for acceptance of 13 different types of cards. The system handles credit and debit payments, loyalty point collection, even the in-house SM Gift Cards with prepaid value of Ps500. Today, the system handles over 30 types of transactions with the option to add more over time. System scalability is achieved by merely adding more W1000 units to cater for the additional loads.

The system is constantly monitored constantly using the netAccess System Monitor - a tool for monitoring the general health and loads on each server in a graphical user interface. The GUI is simple and colour-coded, showing at one glance the state of the entire network.

Considering the scope and the functionality of the system, the project took a mere three weeks from design to configuration and implementation. The project was greatly aided by the fact that the leased lines were quickly available for implementation.

The Outcome

The success of the project was immediately confirmed during the Christmas season of 2005. GHL Systems’ consultants and engineers were on standby in Manila during the festive season. However, the systems and network performed smoothly and without a glitch - and continues to do so until today.

About IKEA

IKEA, the world's largest home-furnishing retailer, opened its new flagship in Mutiara Damansara, Malaysia in August 2003. Featuring 35,811 square meters of floor space (roughly the size of 5 football fields) with over 7,000 home furnishing products displayed in 54 settings, IKEA is the largest furnishing store in South East Asia. However, with just six weeks before its grand opening, IKEA was still lacking the credit card payment facilities necessary for operations.

Website

www.ikea.com.my

Key Challenges

Being located in a fairly new development area where the telecommunications infrastructure was still being developed, there was an urgent need to establish communications in the form of a leased to the Bank to carry the payment transactions. Due to the challenges posed by a tight deadline and the general availability of infrastructure, the leased line to the bank was not going to be ready by the time the store was to be launched. There had to be a way to connect to the bank quickly with high bandwidth.

In addition to the external communications infrastructure, the in-store infrastructure had to be prepared as well. IKEA had over 30 checkout counters on the lower floor of the store in addition to the few counters used for food and beverage upstairs and they all needed to be able to accept credit card payments.

Each counter had to be equipped with an EDC terminal. EDC terminals would normally be equipped with a phone line to dial-up to the bank directly. However, in a large merchant like IKEA, this would not be cost effective.

The EDC terminals had to be linked in a local area network to a transaction concentrator which would then send the transactions along the connection to the bank for processing, saving IKEA the cost of 36 six terminals dialing up to the bank each time a transaction was made.

The Solution

GHL Systems’ NetAccess L1000 Transaction Concentrators were deployed to provide IKEA tactical options, in which to address its situation and circumstances and offer viable alternatives, thus ensuring that its business operations would continue without a hitch.

The Foundation

The VeriFone terminals used by IKEA supports the RS485 serial interface – allowing for wiring to stretch to 1200 meters in length. The local area network was configured to have all 36 terminals in IKEA connected to two separate NetAccess L1000 Transaction Concentrators in a double RS485 loop.

GHL System’s proprietary ESLP protocol allows the transactions to be carried at high speed through the network without the attendant collisions inherent in serial communications protocols.

While awaiting the leased lines to be installed, the communications dilemma was resolved by using an ISDN dialup. ISDN dialup is the main method of backup for digital leased lines - most routers cater for the ISDN backup feature. The routers were configured as if the primary line was down, and the ISDN dialup link was setup, tested and commissioned.

For added measure, the NetAccess L100 transaction concentrator box featured an additional backup connectivity option that

would connect to the bank via wireless data communications, or General Packet Radio Service (GPRS).

Business as Usual

On its opening day, a record of almost 40,000 people visited the store with some customers lining up outside the store as early as 6 am to catch the Early Bird specials on offer. Disaster struck when the ISDN connection failed just 30 minutes before store opening and the leased line was not ready for operations for another month.

The implementation team quickly activated the GPRS backup and communications was re-established within 20 minutes. It was reported that this was the first IKEA store in the world that offered credit card facilities on opening day!

Within the first two days, an impressive total of RM 1.2 Million was transacted over this GPRS link. Eventually the ISDN link was restored and the leased lines were commissioned and have continued smooth operations till today.

Implementation Highlights

• GHL Systems was able to use its ESLP protocol and the RS485 interface to build a highly available network for the EDC terminals in IKEA

• Leveraging on existing mature technologies such as ISDN backup dialing to routers, IKEA was connected to the bank even without the benefit of leased lines

• GPRS technology was utilized to extend the functionality of the system to provide a backup connectivity to the bank while both ISDN and the leased lines were down

• GHL Systems managed to design a highly available, robust and dependable system that was capable of handling the heavy transaction loads generated during IKEA’s first week of operations

Today, GHL Systems’ solutions are in place in many other large malls and retail outlets, working tirelessly behind the scenes ensuring that their complex payment infrastructure stays up and running.

About PCSO & the STL Project

Philippines Charity Sweepstakes Operation (PCSO) which holds the franchise of Small Town Lottery (STL) started the lottery project in 2006. STL works as a democratized form of grassroots-based lottery and charity whereby percentages of the revenues are distributed to the government’s charity funds at local, provincial and national level.

Website

www.pcso.gov.ph

Key Challenges

• Converting manual betting process to a fully electronic version that integrates and interfaces directly with the lottery systems

• Monitoring transaction volume and settlement reports and enabling access to the lottery agents

• Implement wireless terminals to STL corporations nationwide

• Equipping and enabling the ‘Cabo’ with an online betting system

• Providing unique 2-D barcode receipt with digitized patterns for validity on winnings

The Solution

• Citus Sagem EFT930 G Mobile GPRS terminals

• Terminal Management System

• Decryption software

PCSO appointed GHL Systems for wireless terminal and solution implementation across five regions to curb siphoning of revenues from illegal bet collectors.

Currently STL agents are competing against the “juetengs” and “masiaos”, illegal bookies that are causing significant revenue discrepancies.

Speedy, wireless transactions via handheld terminals

Enter GHL System’s sister company GHLSYS Philippines (GHLSY) as a major technology provider. The challenge for GHL was to implement and deploy wireless terminals to STL’s agent corporations around the country as a definitive measure to capture all bets that should go to STL.

The first phase of deployment comprising 700 terminals was successfully launched in August, 2008. PCSO’s further aims to deploy a total of 70,000 terminals over the next few years.

The wireless handheld terminals are connected via GPRS to secure payment routers. Punters will key in their bet details via the terminals which will then transmit the transaction directly to STL. Once the transaction is completed, punters will then be issued a unique 2-D barcode receipt with digitized patterns.

The official receipts will replace the existing yellow PCSO sheets which are easily duplicated- where the same sheets are also used for illegal operations.

The wireless terminals will be deployed in several phases at different regions, beginning with Mindoro and Bicol. Subsequent phases will cover 5 other provinces namely Olongapo City, Silay City, Tarlac, Iloilo City, and Nueva Ecija.

Punters will key in their bet details via the terminals which will then transmit the transaction directly to STL. Once the transaction is completed, punters will then be issued a unique 2-D barcode receipt with digitized patterns.

Key Challenges

• Create a high speed, always-on and user-friendly payment system

• Expand and increase flexibility in payment infrastructure

• Minimize hardware redundancy, costs and transaction time

• Integrate new terminals compliant to contactless readers in legacy system

• Replace individual converters and enable deployment of multiple payment devices with the Payment Extender

The Solution

KL’s top entertainment club utilizes the versatile netAccess X-10 to integrate new contactless card readers while extending its payment network capabilities.

Like every high traffic club, patrons are seeking a hassle free payment that is speedy, efficient and most importantly

secure. In keeping with Zouk KL’s upbeat club experience, GHL’s VersaRead contactless readers are introduced as an alternative credit payment mode via VISA payWave. VersaRead is also the world’s first JCB, MasterCard and Visa type-approved contactless reader with all applications residing in the same reader.

Speedy, efficient update at minimal cost

Prior to VersaRead deployment, Zouk was using Verifone Omni 3750 terminals .The legacy terminals were supported with the RS232 serial protocol which only allowed for point-to-point connection

Payment Networks, EntertainmentZOUK KL, MALAYSIA

to the terminal via VersaLAN. At that time, VersaLAN was utilized for protocol conversion to RS485.

This meant individual converters for each terminal, which translated to high hardware count and costs. In addition to that, the legacy terminals took longer transaction time when processing EMV cards.

The challenge for GHL was to update the terminals in compliance with VISA’s certification and increase flexibility of the payment architecture at minimal cost and disruption to service, while improving transaction performance.

Working in tandem with existing structure

GHL proposed to use the new Verifone Vx510 terminals which are compliant to the latest specifications for contactless readers. The new terminals with VersaRead, will work in tandem with the legacy terminals that do not require contactless readers. The new terminals are supported with the RS232 serial protocol as well, allowing re-use of the existing wiring that was already in place.

More importantly, the updated system features GHL’s latest product- the netAccess X-10 Payment Extender as a replacement to VersaLAN converters. One of the many advantages of netAccess X-10 is in its versatility - it features four RS232 ports, single USB, RS485 and TCP/IP ports. Unlike VersaLAN, netAccess X-10 enables the deployment of multiple payment devices due to the many RS232

ports. This reduces the need for individual converters, while supporting high speed networking with limited cost.

Smart system for future expansion

With netAccess X-10’s intelligent pattern matching routing, limited amount of re-development on the terminal side is involved. Moreover with such a setup, Zouk KL can easily expand its system with multiple Payment Extenders as the business grows.

In its double edged solution, GHL Systems has firstly helped Zouk KL to expand its payment capabilities with VersaRead as well as utilizing high speed, always-on connectivity through the netAccess X-10. Integration could easily take place between the old and the new without any major impact on the current payment architecture. Secondly, with netAccess X-10, the wiring structure and legacy terminals can be retained and reused. This has significantly reduced hardware

and maintenance costs thus making this improved payment structure cost effective in the long run.

Implementation Highlights

• Same-source implementation and consulting services

• Rapid deployment with no disruption to business

• Full integration of new functionality into existing networks

• Streamlining of infrastructure

Key Benefits

• Extends number of comports and life of existing terminals

• Reduce network complexity therefore minimizing hardware costs and maintenance

• Connection versatility via RS232, and RS485 or TCP/IP connection
