Gia Marie and Gulliver

Stephen Foster

The best kind of day at Animal Friends is a day when a long-term resident goes home. Procedurally, there is nothing to distinguish these adoptions from any other. A family visits us, our adoption counselors work their magic and that family leaves with more fur than they came in with. But emotionally, the mix of joy, relief and a touch of sadness make these adoptions feel so much more special.

Gia Marie and Gulliver Gia and Gulliver, two lovely Pit Bull mixes, were confiscated from a terrible situation on Aug. 3, 2012. They were adopted by a wonderful family on Sept. 21, 2014 – that’s a total of

779 days! For those 779 days, they overcame behavioral and medical issues with the help of our staff and volunteers. And when they finally found that perfect family, our

volunteers threw their new parents a going-home party. Gia and Gully’s new parents keep their fan base updated on their antics through their Facebook page.

Steven Foster Steven Foster, an 11-year-old Domestic Shorthaired feline, was originally adopted from Animal Friends as a

kitten. He came back to us in February of 2013. Our volunteers worked diligently to help him to overcome his fears of people and new places. This past October, we were visited by a couple with a specific request: to see the cats who had been with us the longest. They chose Steven and he has been quite happy in his home ever since.

Paul A white, Californian bun, Paul, had a tough time finding a forever home. With beautiful, white fur and striking pink eyes, we think some may have been taken aback by his looks. Paul spent nearly a year and a half with us at Animal Friends, waiting for just the right people to take him home. It was a very happy day when Paul (renamed Jeckyll) hopped through our front door, new family in tow.

The holiday season is full of activity; attending parties, shopping, decorating and running around. Sometimes, it can be difficult to focus on what really matters most – family – this time of year. Our long-time shelter residents are still waiting (impatiently at that!) for their families to meet them. And please, adopt – don’t shop – this holiday season and open your hearts to an animal who needs you.

Holiday Mews

Get into the

Spirit With the holidays in full swing, we’re really getting into the spirit here at Animal Friends – even our residents have been barking, meowing and hopping along to the melody of “Jingle Bells” lately (kidding of course!). This really is a wonderful time of year at the shelter. We’re witness to so much love and compassion. And it’s just that much sweeter when a family finds their new member and takes him or her out of our care and into their home forever.

These families are the perfect embodiment of hope during this magical time of year. While we’d love for every family to be able to adopt one of our merry pets, we know that’s not always possible. So here are other ways to support our animals:

• Underwrite an adoption Consider underwriting an adoption fee. That hopper, feline or pooch will be forever grateful as you’ll make their adoption truly priceless.

• Stuff our residents’ stockings Our shelter pets have a wish list just like anyone else! They have a list of items that they love and use each day. By donating specific items that our residents need it enables us to use monetary donations on quality care and services.

• Become a little helper We can always use volunteers. If you want to work with the animals you can choose the species that appeal to you most – or all of them! We have plenty of other areas that could use your help as well. From data entry to greeting visitors to helping with special events, there’s a niche that fits every interest.

To find out more information about these and many other giving options, please visit our www.ThinkingOutside TheCage.org.

From all of us at Animal Friends, we want to thank you for all you have done, are doing and will continue to do for

the homeless animals in our care. Without you, our work wouldn’t be possible. So, thank you!

We wish you, and yours, the absolute merriest this joyous time of year.

Every month, the Low-Cost Spay/Neuter program at Animal Friends offers low-cost vaccine clinics. Our next clinic will be held at Animal Friends on Thursday, December 11, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Can’t make it? No problem. Additional dates will be posted at www.ThinkingOutsideTheCage.org/vaccine.

We offer a variety of different vaccines for both cats and dogs. We also offer single-dose flea treatments are available for $5. If you need help deciding which vaccines your pet needs, please check out www.ThinkingOutsideTheCage.org/vaccine for more information.

Even though winter is upon us and you won’t be spending much time outside, it’s still very important to have your pet vaccinated against rabies. In addition to ensuring your pet is healthy, rabies vaccines are required by law and pet owners can be fined for not having their pets vaccinated.

Also available at our low-cost clinics are microchips. For $20, you can purchase a life-saving microchip for your pet. Microchips improve the chance to reunite lost pets with their owners.

Microchips are approximately the size of a grain of rice and are implanted under your pet’s skin between the shoulder blades. Each chip has a unique number that can be read by a scanner and identifies your pet.

For the safety of all our guests, we ask that dogs be on non-retractable leashes and cats be in secure plastic carriers.

While we do not offer vaccines for rabbits, microchips are available for rabbits on a case-by-case basis. Please call ahead if you plan to bring your rabbit.

Clinics are cash only and registration is required. Please call 412.847.7029 to reserve a space today!

Keep your pets healthy and safe by updating their vaccines.

GaGeThis perky-eared, wide-eyed senior is the perfect low-maintenance companion. Ginger is a sweet gal who just enjoys being cuddled. Ginger relishes leisurely strolls on shelter trails. Be careful though. Because of her coloring and petite stature, she can easily become lost in piles of autumn leaves! This gentle soul is looking for a home in which she can spend her golden years. Ideally, her forever family would consist of children older than eight. Because Ginger enjoys playing with other small dogs, she may also welcome a canine sibling. She, however, prefers a home without cats.

This perky-eared, brown-eyed beauty is looking for a home where she can relax. She’s somewhat nervous, but she’s coming out of her shell. Since arriving at Animal Friends, she has made tremendous progress. Chloe is well-behaved in the car and enjoys the great outdoors. We recommend a home with older children for Chloe, with no other dogs in the household. Come meet this loving girl today!

Chloe gives licks and kisses to Joyce Waltner-Barmak, who gave in honor of Fluff Waltner.

This energetic, young Terrier mix is sure to make a great family dog. Gage is a friendly, wiggly guy who loves to play and go on walks. Gage would make a great companion animal for an active family who is willing to work with him and make sure he learns the behaviors he needs to be a great canine citizen.

Gage gives a high paw to Jean Wright for her Petsburgh Press sponsorship.

This handsome boy will make an excellent addition to any home. He is friendly and social and has quickly become a volunteer and staff favorite. This gentle boy loves toys and long walks. He has spent time in a foster home, and his foster mom assures us that he is wonderful and doesn’t have accidents in the house. And someone believes in Sam Spade so much that they have sponsored his adoption donation; he is truly priceless!

:D :D Much like his namesake, our Emoji always has a big smile on his face. He loves people and really enjoys playing with other dogs. He’s a young, energetic boy and will need a family that can help him learn good canine manners. Come say hi to Emoji today!

5Visit www.ThinkingOutsideTheCage.org/adopt to view all of our adoptable animals! You can sort pets by age, breed, gender or even date of arrival!

You’ll be captivated by this sweet girl’s gentle brown eyes and big heart! Tana has a loving personality and is happiest when around people. Tana is different from other dogs in that she has only three legs, but she doesn’t view that as a limitation! Running and playing with squeaky balls are some of her favorite activities! Her other favorite activity is spending time cuddling of course! This little cuddle bug is suited to live in a home with respectful children 12+ and would prefer to be the only animal in your home.

This gentle senior never expected to find himself at a shelter. Kudzu was abandoned by his family and brought to Animal Friends. This loving, laid-back guy can only be described as the perfect companion. He enjoys leisurely walks and playing with stuffed toys. Kudzu would be most comfortable in a home with children who are respectful of his age. He also gets along well with other dogs.

Kudzu thanks Lynn Koziak for her generous donation.

KuDzu

This endearing senior has so much going for him! Sushi exudes a spirit of gentleness and calmness. He will happily sit or give paw in hopes of an affectionate pat on the head. Sushi’s exercise requirements are minimal—his jogging days are behind him, but he does find leisurely strolls appealing! This wonderful fellow would be most comfortable in a home with children over 6.

Sushi thanks Louis and Mary Ellen Benedict who gave in memory of the Benedict Pets.

This sweet soul is patiently waiting for a calm, loving home in which she can spend her golden years. Angel envisions herself lounging in front of a TV or sitting on a porch. She appears to get along with other dogs and may not mind sharing a home with cats. We do recommend that Angel lives in a home with children over 10.

Angel thanks Renee Newton for her generous sponsorship.

ANGel

Sweet, shy Zoe was a well-loved pet whose owner passed away. She does best when she can approach people on her own terms, and she would grow to trust and love the people who gave her the space to do so. While Zoe continues to be shy, she has warmed the hearts of volunteers who give her the opportunity to get to know them slowly.

Ernie, a 3-year-old red Pit Bull with soulful eyes, definitely has a sense of adventure and a love of people. He gets along well with just about everyone. His ideal home will include people willing to provide training and exercise to help him burn off some of his energy. Ernie would make a perfect running partner! Visit the adoption desk to find out more!

As the song goes, there’s no place like home for the holidays. So, take a bus, take a train or go hop an aeroplane to get to Animal Friends this December for two adoption extravaganzas!

They say you can’t choose your family, Animal Friends begs to differ. We’re hosting a family-friendly adoption weekend beginning at 4 p.m. on Fri., Dec. 12 through Sun., Dec. 14 at 5 p.m. We’re extending our hours and will be accepting adoption applications up until closing time on all three days.

At Animal Friends, the best gift that you can give is that of a forever home. Visit us Sat., December 27 and Sun., December 28 from 10 a.m. to 8 pm for our “Best Gift of All” adopt-a-thon. Help us to find our shelter residents a forever home before the holidays are over and the New Year is upon us!

6 Thanks to our Pets for Vets program, adoption is priceless for pets age 2 and up when you show your military ID!

Walter could be Sir Walter because he is so dignified. He is a very quiet bunny who is a little aloof with the other bunnies. Walter enjoys people and likes to be held and petted. Walter would be a wonderful companion and would be fine being an only bunny with a new bunny owner. Come meet this gentleman today!Walter tips his hat to Bunny Szyjko for her donation! Thank you!

Richard is a sweet bunny who has been through a lot in his short life. This regal rabbit is a perfect gentleman and loves pets and attention. He will need a family that will keep a close eye on his health and make sure he visits the vet regularly. Stop by and see if Richard is the right bunny to hop into your life.

WalterRicHarDJubba is a bunny who knows what he likes and isn’t afraid to let you know it! This opinionated bun would do best with an experienced rabbit owner. Don’t be fooled by his rough exterior though! Inside, Jubba is just as sweet as pie and is looking for someone to love. Come meet him today!Jubba gives a thump of approval to Marian Centurione, who gave in memory of Danielle “19 years, perfect angel”.

FluFFy

Mahayla is shy and hides from strangers at first, but after some warming up she is truly loving and affectionate. When she trusts and knows you, she’s quite friendly and enjoys the company of people. She’d do best with someone who is calm and nurturing. If this sounds like you, or the type of kitty you want to hang out with, come in and meet with Mahayla today!

Fluffy showed up one day on a family’s back porch and while she made her home with them for nearly three years, they couldn’t keep her. She has gorgeous long brown and gray hair, and her front paws are declawed. She enjoys being petted and loves treats. She wants nothing more than a comfy lap where she can dream the day away.

Fluffy thanks Madeline Miele for her sponsorship in honor of Blue, her beloved long-hair gray.

Jetta’s a beautiful cat with a thick coat and luminous, yellow eyes. She’s confident, friendly and affectionate and loves being brushed and having her face and neck scratched. Jetta doesn’t mind being picked up and will go into her carrier for a treat or catnip toy. She uses her litter-box like a champ. Someone believes in Jetta so much that they have sponsored her adoption—she’s truly priceless!

Jetta thanks Terry and Mary Soster for their sponsorship in honor of everyone who has a rescue cat.

Jesse

Samson can be a sweet, cuddly, attention-seeking teddy bear who loves to be petted or held in a lap. At other times, he likes to run, jump and play hard. He often entertains himself by climbing and exploring and he likes interactive toys too. Samson likes to play the hunter and will

drag his prey off to an imaginary lair. If you’re looking for a charismatic

companion, meet Samson!

Samson

Jesse is our best-kept secret. Gentle, timid and unassuming, you’ll find him lounging in a corner of our Cat Cottage. Jesse loves to be petted and will tenderly climb in your lap. He needs to be an only cat or live with another FIV+ cat. (Like Mamie! Check out her bio as well!) Do you have room in your heart and home for a cat like Jesse? Come meet him today.

Jesse thanks Mary Wasemann for her Petsburgh Press sponsorship.

Petsburgh Press sponsorships are a great way to honor or say thanks to a friend or pet. If you would like to sponsor the adoption fee of an animal, please contact our Adoptions Department at 412.847.7002.

Margie is friendly and playful. She loves to have her ears and head petted. Margie likes to talk and trills happily when greeting volunteers. She would love to meet you and tell you about her day. Her favorite pastime is pawing a wiggly shoestring, and she has a weakness for catnip and tasty treats. If you think you could love a cat like Margie, talk to an adoption counselor and see if she’s the right cat for you.

Do you have a sweet tooth? Does the thought of sugar plums make your mouth water? Cookie (and her friend Cupcake) were adopted as kittens and were returned when their owners could no longer care from them. These beautiful white ladies have always been together and would love to find a new home together. They would prefer a quiet home where they could curl up with their new family and watch the world go by. If you think that these lovely ladies would fit into your life. Stop in and see them today.

Ithaca came to Animal Friends after she and her siblings were found in an abandoned house. Ithaca is energetic and loves to play with all sorts of toys. She loves getting her head rubbed by the shelter staff and enjoys stretching out and relaxing any chance she gets. If you are looking for a playmate and a loving companion, ask an adoption counselor today about Ithaca.

Ithaca says, “Meow!” to Carole and Eugene for their sponsorship in memory of Rosie, the best of cats! Passed away 10/22/13.

You have to hear this lady purr—she makes the sweetest trilling sound! It’s so distinctive, you could find her in the dark. She’s an 8-year-old beauty with brilliant yellow eyes. Izzy is a sweet and affectionate girl who loves to sit in laps and to be petted and scratched. She would get along with both children and adults in her forever home.

Izzy thinks Rebecca Zvolenski is the cat’s meow! Thank you!

13At Animal Friends, dogs ages 5 and over, cats ages 6 and over, and bunnies older than 5 years are Red Collar Society pets. Their adoptions come with special benefits!

Mamie is a sweet kitty who likes people. She’s quiet, friendly and affectionate and will weave around your legs, hoping to claim you for her own. Mamie has an immune deficiency called Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). She needs to be an only cat or live with another FIV+ kitty (Like Jesse! Check out his bio as well!). Often overlooked, our FIV+ cats are some of the most affectionate cats in the shelter and make wonderful companions. Please come meet Mamie today.

Barbarella is a sweetheart who loves attention! All she needs to be content is some loving pats on the head and a couple treats. She loves being sweet-talked and will let you pet her all day. Coming from an indoor hoarding situation that involved more than 30 cats, she’s accustomed to other cats and gets along great with them. Come meet this darling today!

Barbarella would like to thank Dr. Jeff Gryn and Dr. Emily Grum for their sponsorship in memory of their cat Snaefells.

Oliver, the big grey tabby cat, loved his quiet life with his owner, Miss Tilly. One day, Miss Tilly brings home a tiny white ball

of fluff. The fluff turns out to be a bunny that Miss Tilly names “Marshmallow”! Although Oliver isn’t sure about this new addition at first, soon he and Marshmallow

become best friends. This charming story is

based on true events! The book is ideal

for bedtime reading or rainy days; the illustrations are done with calm pastels and there are short poems worked into the

story as well. If you’re looking for a story

about friendship, with just a little bit of mischief mixed in, look for Marshmallow at your local library or bookstore!

From beginning to end, “Wilson and Bella’s Christmas Wish!” is filled with charming, vibrant illustrations done by local author/artist Susan Castriota. This wonderful story teaches children about responsibility and compassion. The book sells for $14.95 and all proceeds will benefit Animal Friends! You can visit Wilson and Bella at
