Structured activities are provided so that students learn and practise what to do if there is a fire in a room they are in.

The learning is supported by a shared reading story Our Firewise Family and practice evacuations of your classroom.

Inquiry learning into what firefighters do to put fires out and the other roles they have in your community.

The learning is supported by the opportunity to talk with a firefighter when they come to deliver a Get Firewise presentation and possible opportunities to investigate the fire truck and visit the fire station.

Firefighters visit the class to discuss the Get Firewise messages and answer students’ questions about their job.

Information is provided so that all students can learn to call 111 and give correct information about a fire emergency.

Inquiry learning into how rural communities deal with fire emergencies.

This inquiry learning will have particular relevance for families in rural areas who cannot always rely on rapid assistance from firefighters.

Inquiry learning into what fire is and how and why fire can be dangerous.

The inquiry learning is supported by:

photographs, DVD footage of a fire and information within the -Get Firewise resource

websites - www.getfirewise.org.nz/teachers and www.fire.org.nz

Students complete activities in the Get Firewise resource that reinforce their knowledge that matches and lighters are used by adults to light fires and that children who find matches and lighters should give them to an adult.

Your students’ inquiry into what fire is will determine whether you focus learning around the safe use of candles. Information and activities about the safe use of candles are provided in the resource.

Structured activities are provided so that students learn, or reinforce their learning, about smoke alarms, and practise what to do when they hear a smoke alarm.

This learning is supported by a shared reading story Tamati and Sam Get Firewise and practice evacuations of your classroom.

Students investigate what the firefighters do to rescue people and put fires out.

Firefighters come to the class and discuss the Get Firewise messages and answer students’ questions about their job.

Visual starters are provided to assist students to recall prior knowledge and to focus the students’ learning.
