    Wear Protection

    WELD-ON HALF-ARROW EDGES

Weld-on half-arrow edges protect the bucket structure by adding more wearmaterial to the base edge, and they will fit other brand buckets.

The weld-on half-arrow edges can be used to customize loader buckets. Forexample, they could be used as sidecutters on bucket side bars to improve pene-tration, or welded between bucket teeth to reduce scalloping. Before weldinghalf-arrow sections between bucket teeth, be sure to check for tip and pin holeclearance. This is a concern primarily when using bottom strap adapters.

    WELD-ON HEEL SHROUDS

Weld-on heel shrouds protect the lower outside corner of all types of Caterpillarand other brand buckets. Protection is given to the bottom and the side of thebucket with extra wear material concentrated in the corner where its needed most.Straight and curved heel shrouds are available in two different sizes to best matchbucket contour and size, and abrasiveness of the application. The inside corner isrelieved to eliminate interference with the bucket structure. Shrouds need not beplaced tightly together. They can be spaced apart and still provide full protectiondue to shadowing. Weld-on heel shrouds are especially applicable for LHEX andunderground LHD buckets.

For high wear applications Caterpillars Mechanically Attached Wear Plate System(MAWPS) should be considered due to their quick change design. However, formoderate wear applications and sites especially concerned about mechanicallyfastened parts these weld-on heel shrouds are an excellent option to consider.

    Wear Protection

MECHANICALLY ATTACHED WEAR PLATE SYSTEM (MAWPS)The Mechanically Attached Wear Plate System provides a hammerless means of instal-lation and removal. They are capable of protecting wear areas previously unprotectedor protected by weld-on or bolt-on wear plates in a large variety of applications on Catand competitive machines. The Skeletal MAWPS uses the same Series 20 base andretainer as the regular MAWPS, but has a modified skeletal plate that fits on the base. The Skeletal MAWPS wear plate is skeletal in form so it traps material in the plate andbetween the plates.

Features and Benefits Mechanical, hammerless installation. The Mechanically Attached Wear Plate

System consists of a through-hardened DH-2 wear plate which slides onto a weld-onbase plate and is held in place with a patented compression retainer. The SkeletalMAWPS wear plate is skeletal in form so it traps material in the plate and betweenthe plates. With both MAWPS systems, worn wear plates can be quickly replacedusing a common prybar or a MAWPS removal tool, 160-5119, without hammeringor welding. This makes removal and installation quick and easy. Worn wear platescan be quickly replaced using a common prybar without hammering or welding, making removal and installation quick and easy.

Reduced downtime and maintenance. Because the wear plates can be changedquickly, usually in two minutes or less, downtime and maintenance time are reducedcompared to weld-on or bolt-on wear plates.

Extended wearing. The patented compression retainer is positioned low in the baseplate allowing a greater percentage of the wear plate to be worn away before replace-ment. Competitive wear plates house the retainer higher in the wear plate therebyreducing the amount of available wear material. The Cat wear plates more efficientuse of total material lengthens replacement intervals and allows for less additionalbucket weight for comparable protection.

Flexible application. The weld-on base plate can be welded on virtually any flator moderately curved surface. The system is designed to take loads from any direc-tion so the orientation of the wear plate to the direction of the load is inconse-quential. The Mechanically Attached Wear Plate System can easily be used tocustomize a wide variety of wearing surfaces.

DescriptionWear plates are made from Caterpillar DH-2 steel and are through hardened to obtainoptimum strength and wear life. The base plate is made from slightly softer but toughweldable steel to withstand high load forces. The base plate is not subject to wearunder normal conditions since it is entirely covered by the wear plate. The patentedcompression retainer is investment cast from spring steel material and acts as aspacer when located in the holding position. As a system, the Mechanically AttachedWear Plate System will accept loads from any direction and does not require specificorientation as with competitive wear plates. They only require approximately 2 inches(50 mm) of space from adjacent objects on one end to facilitate replacement.ApplicationThe Mechanically Attached Wear Plate System can be installed on virtually anyflat surface or on moderately curved surfaces providing the radius is not extremelysmall. Radius capability is specified in the parts consist chart. Bucket bottoms andsides, dozer push arms, Hydraulic Excavator bucket ski runners and sides, truckbody duck tails, Tiger dozer blades, crusher hoppers are all candidates for wear plateprotection. Long life, ability to customize protection and ease of use promise to makethis unique wear system a popular alternative to bolt-on or weld-on wear plates.

The Skeletal Mechanically Attached Wear Plate System can be installed on virtuallyany flat or moderately curved surfaces of the truck bed. They come in two sizes, stan-dard and heavy duty. Long life, ability to customize protection and ease of usepromise to make this unique wear system a popular alternative to weld-on wearprotection.

Wear IndicatorThe wear plate has recessed holes (blind holes) cast into each corner to serve as awear indicator making inspections quick and easy. When the holes become exposedin one or more corners, it is time to change the wear plate. If the wear plate isallowed to wear beyond the wear indicator, damage to base plate may occur.

Remove and Install Instructions1) Locate wear area to be protected and clean free of dirt/paint/debris. Be sure to

leave 2 inches (50 mm) minimum clearance from adjacent objects to allow forwear plate removal and installation.

    2) Position the base plate in the desired location and weld the base plate in posi-tion welding at locations A & B as shown in the following illustration.Location C is used only for the 50 series base plate. Make one pass at a time ineach location to avoid excess heat build-up. The base plate will require severalpasses at each location to ensure proper strength is achieved. Use the chart todetermine fillet weld size and number of passes for each series base plate.

    Series Fillet Base Plate Weld Size20 Series 0.6 in (15 mm)30 Series 0.6 in (15 mm)40 Series 0.7 in (18 mm)50 Series 0.8 in (20 mm)

    3) Position the wear plate over the base plate and slide the wear plate onto the base.4) Install one end of the compression retainer under the resting point.5) Insert installation tool 160-5119 or a small pry bar with an 8 mm (0.31") width point

between the base and wear plate and pry the compression retainer into place. Afterthe retainer compresses and goes over center, it will pop into place and expand.

    6) Remove the installation tool and check the compression retainer to assure it is inposition.

Removal1) Clean the compression retainer opening in the wear plate free of packed material.

A pneumatic chipper is the most effective method to clean the packed material. Notall packed material needs to be cleaned away to remove the retainer.

    2) Insert the installation tool or a small pry bar in the slotted area of the compres-sion retainer and pry up. The compression retainer will pop up out of the lock-ing position.

    3) Remove the retainer and slide the wear plate off the base plate.

NOTE: Compression retainers can be reused if they meet the following criteria:1. 138-0006 no less than 87 mm (3.43") length.

138-0007 no less than 97 mm (3.82") length.2. Retainer is no more than 2 mm (.080") out of flat.3. There is no deformation of the retainer material.

  • WEAR BARS

Wear bars provide additional blade protection in highly abrasive applica-tions where short liner life has been encountered. Wear bars are designedto be welded on top of a wear surface.

Wear bars come in different lengths to allow a customer to tailor the place-ment of the wear protection while minimizing the amount of throw-awayiron. Part numbers for the various lengths are shown below:

Wear bars are made from DH-2 steel alloy, through-hardened for greaterwear resistance and strength. Core hardness of the bars will be between45-52 Rc (2.7-3.0 BR). If the bars are to be flame cut, the burn zone mustbe preheated to 150-230C. It is also recommended to preheat the bars tothe 150-230C temperature when welding. The bars are to be positioned sothe bevel is next to the surface shown at right.

    D11 CARRYDOZERSBulldozers / Compactors

CARRYDOZER GETDue to its shallow cutting edge angle (35 vs. 56), the D11 CD blade has only 1.5" (38 mm) of usable wear sur-face compared to a standard dozers 2.618" (66.5 mm). Failure to change cutting edges and end bits at this lowerwear limit will result in extensive damage to the cutting edge support, end bit support and excessive gusset wear.

The Reversible Cutting Edge System offers greater wear life along with a lower cost per hour than the One-wayCutting Edge System. For additional information, reference IRM GET05-09 (PELJ0520).

CUTTING EDGE SUPPORTSFOR D6R THRU D11R BULLDOZER BLADES

The cutting edge support is an integral part of the blade structure to which the cutting edges and endbits are bolted. These cutting edge support plates offer the same high quality materials and dimen-sional precision as the factory originals. Due to the critical nature of the bolted connection betweenthe GET and dozer blade, a genuine Cat cutting edge support will guarantee dimensional accuracy.Since some of these parts are MAO, made as ordered, check your parts system for availability.

DescriptionThese cutting edge support plates are available for factory bulldozer blades on D6R thru D11R TrackType Tractors. The cutting edge support is an integral part of the blade structure that mounts the cuttingedges and end bits. See the Illustration 1 (Part Identification) on next page for details. The cutting edgesupport consists of one piece for Straight, Angle, and Carrydozer blades. The Universal and Semi-Ublades use a three-piece cutting edge support system that consists of one support in the center alongwith another support for the right and left hand sides. Cutting Edge Supports table on page 2-28 showsthe required cutting edge support part numbers for the corresponding D6R thru D11R bulldozer blades.

Features and BenefitsThe cutting edge support provides a structure to which the cutting edge and end bit are bolted. Prolongedoperation with loose hardware can cause the bolts to elongate the mounting holes in the support. Thismakes it increasingly difficult to keep hardware tight. Repeatedly burning-off hardware also weakensthe support around the bolt holes. If cutting edges and end bits are not replaced soon enough, severewear and damage can occur to the cutting edge support. If a blade is suffering from any of these prob-lems, a genuine Cat cutting edge support will ease the pain with its guaranteed dimensional accuracy.

Installation InstructionsAccurate positioning and welding of a new support is critical. The dimensions for the proper angle() and distance (X) from the center of the bolt hole in the cutting edge bolt hole to the lower edge ofthe moldboard are located in Illustration 2 (Critical Dimensions) below. For end supports, distance(X) is from the center of the bolt hole in the bottom row to the lower edge of the moldboard.Failure to adhere to these dimensions could result in improper fit up as well as poor GET performance.

All gussets and structural supports that were removed must be replaced. Use E7018 welding rod or anequivalent for all welding.
