Irish Immigration In the middle of the nineteenth century, more than

one-half of the Ireland population immigrated to America.

From 100,000 to 1,000,000 people came from Ireland to the United States throughout 1840-1860.

The reason people left Ireland was because of the potato famine that destroyed almost all plantations.

Once in America…

Both German and Irish people had hard journeys to get to America.

Once they got there they were crammed into small houses.

They had to find jobs in factories or on railroads.

People had to live off of little things that they brought to America.

Many of the Irish would be turned down for jobs.
