Sarny has been learning his secret What is the skill she is learning?

Tuesday’s Summary SARNY, thanks to John’s teachings, now knows how to READ. She has also learned something else besides the Alphabet. She learned numbers.

We also have learned that John has already run away from other plantations. Since his wife and child were sold away.

His mission is now to return south and help slaves learn to read.

Sarny continues to deliver letters to the Doctor because Mrs. Waller is having an “affair”

Meanwhile the entire Plantation is busy harvesting Massa Waller’s Cotton Crop.

Wednesday’s SummarySARNY has “acquired” a Bible to read…..

How did she get it? She Stole It

From reading the Bible she tells the other slaves “God is on the side of the slaves.”

What bible story is proof of this? Moses helping the Israelites escape slavery in Egypt and God helping Moses part the Red Sea

Wednesday’s Conclusion

Sarny & John have used paper from the stolen Bible to write passes for Outlaw & Egypt to escape to freedom.

Waller’s son has found the Bible in the slave cabin and can’t understand why his “friends” would steal it. He now was faced with a difficult decision. He learns slaves aren’t friends but his property. They should be obeying their masters.

Concluding Scenes

• Waller needs to punish the slave who was writing passes. John said he stole the Bible and wrote the passes so Waller chopped his thumb and finger off with an axe.

• Outlaw and Egypt use their forged passes to escape to freedom.

• In the conclusion Waller goes to Church and threatens to shoot all of his slaves if they don’t tell who knows how to read/write and forged the passes.

• Sarny reveals the truth that Waller would not kill his slaves because she saw how much money each one is worth

• Sarny hinted that she had another secret about Mrs. Waller. Before she could tell, the Doctor spoke up and said he taught Egypt how to write and didn’t realize she would forge a pass for the escape. He “covered” for he and Mrs. Waller’s secret relationship.

The Ending

• Night John is sold off to someone else and we can assume he will continue teaching slaves to read.

• Because of her knowledge about Mrs. Waller Sarny is sold-off too. She reminds us the movie is about Night John and helping slaves learn how to read.
