Genre

A genre is a classification system for literature, art or entertainment.

New genres are invented all the time and old ones fall out of use.

Works can fit into multiple genres if they combine different elements.

Literary Genres:

At high school we study five literary genres: Novels Plays Short Stories Poetry Movies

Movie Genres:

We are probably most familiar with movie genres.

Genres vs Themes:

Learners commonly mistake genres for themes.

When we ask you to identify a theme in a literary work, we often get the answer: “it’s a comedy” or “it’s a drama”.

Um … NO! Those are genres. Don’t confuse the two!!
