    General Teaching Learning Strategies

This part contains some general activities that can be used throughout the textbook and

for all levels of learners. It is suggested that Teacher adapt these activities to meet the

    needs of their own learners.

Reading Aloud: A Commercial for Reading

To get pupils 'hooked' on reading i.e., to expose pupils to the aesthetic values of thelanguage through listening to stories and through pictures in the stories.

    a) Teacher are encouraged to read a story to the pupils during each English lesson.

This can be done either at the beginning or at the end of the lesson.b) Teacher can use between 5-10 minutes of each class time for this activity.

    c) Teacher can utilize books allocated to the schools under the Ministry's Nilam

Project/ The Class Reader Programme. Books chosen can be based on the themesin the textbook or any other themes Teacher consider relevant to the pupils needs.

    How to read-aloud

    1. Teacher sits facing the pupils. Have pupils sit facing the teacher.

    2. Teacher holds up a book so that it faces the pupils.

    3. Begin by reading the title followed by the name of the author and the name of theillustrator. Explain that the author is the person who wrote the book and that the

illustrator refers to the person who illustrated the book.

    4. Teacher reads (with expression) to the pupils, showing them the pictures in thebook.

    5. Teacher asks pupils if they like the story.6. Teacher asks any other questions appropriate to the level of the pupils and their

background knowledge. Some questions that can be asked are: Name the people

in the story.Where does the story take place? What happens?

    7. Optional activity: Teacher can ask pupils to express their comprehension of the

story by drawing their favourite part of the story.

Put up the pupils' illustrations/drawings at the English board in the classroom. Also have pupils write the title of the story and their names as illustrators

    Creative Writing

Teacher can ask pupils to write and illustrate their own books.

    1. Teacher can assign pupils a title or ask pupils to choose what they want to writeabout. Ask pupils to write one sentence for each page. For example pupils can

    write about "Myself"

    Page 1. My name is _____.Page 2. I am a boy/girl.

Page 3. I am seven years old.

    Page 4. I like to eat ice- cream.Page 5. I like to ..

    2. Teacher can provide sentencd have pupils complete them.3. When all the pupils have completed their "books", the teacher can have a session

called "Reading Day" or "Let's Share A Story" where each pupil will read thestory she/he has written and illustrated. Teacher is encouraged to place these

books in the English cornerso that pupils can read "books" written by their friends.

    Show and Tell

This is an activity to encourage pupils to speak and to help them develop self-confidence

    in using the English language.

Teacher can do this in several ways.(a) Ask pupils to bring in their favourite toys or any other items and have them

describe it to the class. (All levels)

    (b) Teacher can bring in items related to the themes in the textbook. Put items in abox and have pupils pick up an item and talk about it. (Intermediate and

    Advanced level)

    (c) Pupils can pick an item e.g., a pencil and talk about it.

It is always best that the teacher shows the pupils how this is done. For the weaker pupils,

teacher is encouraged to provide an example.

Example: I have a pencil. It is green in colour.

    I use it to write.
