JAZZ GREAT GENE DINOVI AND HIS “GENERATIONS” TRIO IN KOBAYASHI HALL FOR A LIVE CONCERT AND RECORDING

The JCCC is proud to present Gene DiNovi in a live performance in Kobayasahi Hall which will be recorded for Gene’s 26th CD release. “Generations” brings together the tri-generational musical talents of pianist Gene DiNovi, bassist Dave Young and guitarist Andrew Scott. With more than a century of combined musical experience, “Generations” entertains audiences with their creative performances of original compositions and gems from the great American songbook. Some of “Generations” repertoire is taken from Gene’s original ensemble that played many of New York’s fabled 52nd Street jazz clubs during the late 1940s and early 1950s. “Generations” captures the spirit and sound of that original bebop scene (of which DiNovi was a charter member), drawing on the pianist’s vast experiences as a sideman for Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Marsala, Boyd Raeburn, Stan Hasselgard, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Lester Young, Peggy Lee, Tony Bennett, Lena Horne, Carmen McRae, Fats Navarro, Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, and Al Cohn. Since 1990 DiNovi has recorded for Candid, Hep, Baldwin Street and Marquis. However he has primarily recorded for Mitsuo Johfu and his prestigious Marshmallow label. The debut recording of ‘Generations’ will be on this label as well. Although younger than DiNovi, bassist Dave Young has had an equally impressive career in both jazz and classical circles having worked with Lenny Breau, Clark Terry, Zoot Sims, Moe Koffman and Nat Adderley to name but a few. His own recordings with Phil Dwyer,

Michel Lambert and Rob Piltch (winner of the 1993 best jazz JUNO award) and later his series of duo spots with such pianists as Oliver Jones, Mulgrew Miller, Barry Harris, Tommy Flanagan and Renee Rosnes earned him the respect of musicians and jazz critics worldwide. Young is currently the bassist with Oscar Peterson. Andrew Scott is the youngest member of the trio. With two recordings out on the Sackville label (This One’s for Barney with Harry Allen and Blue Mercer with Randy Sandke and Mike Murley), Scott has garnered radio, press and jazz festival attention around the world. Scott is in demand as both a jazz guitarist and educator (currently on the faculty of Humber College, York University and Seneca College). He has worked with such fine musicians as Bob James, Mike Murley, Randy Sandke, Perry White, Harry Allen, Bernie Senensky, Terry Clarke, Phil Stewart, Don Thompson, Marvin Stamm, Bob Moses, Duncan Hopkins, Terry Lukiwski, Phil Dwyer, Jake Wilkinson, William Carn, Terry Promane, Steve McDade, Andrew Downing, Mark Kelso, Dave Restivo and Marc Jordan. Join us on July 12 for a truly historical evening of world-class jazz.

Date: Thursday July 12, 2007 Time: 7:00pm Tickets: $20 JCCC members, $25 non-members

30 years of outdoor fun! Gather your families and friends and spend a fun-filled day at the 30th Annual Japanese Canadian Community Picnic to be held at Caledon Place on Sunday July 1, 2007. Many families hold their “summer get-together” at Caledon Place on July 1 - why don’t you do the same? You can partake in the ever-popular afternoon bingo, games and races for children and the young at heart. A pond stocked with trout awaits fishermen entering the fishing derby. ARIGATO DAYThe spirit of community and volunteerism is the foundation on which the JCCC is built. Throughout the year many individuals and groups selflessly support the various programs and special events held at the JCCC. As a small token of their gratitude, the JCCC Board of Directors invites all the volunteers to join them at Arigato Day. On Sunday July 22, 2007 at 3:00pm, Arigato Day will start with an informal social time, a chance to relax and have some fun with your family and friends. At 5:00pm the Board of Directors will serve dinner. The event will finish with an award ceremony, including the recognition of the 2007 recipients of the Ontario Volunteer Service Awards sponsored by the Government of Ontario. RSVP’s would be appreciated at 416-441-2345 ext. 222 before July 13.

NOSTALGIA NIGHT 2007The JCCC Heritage Committee is presenting Nostalgia Night 2007 on Saturday July 7, 2007 in the Kobayashi Hall at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. This year we will be recognizing the Dance Clubs of the 1950s to the 1990s and the Women’s Auxiliary of the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre.

Japanese Canadians were scattered throughout the Toronto area during the post war period. Numerous dance clubs over the years were the venues at which Japanese Canadians were able to meet and socialize as well as learn social and ballroom dancing with other Nikkei’s in the Metro Toronto area.

The Women’s Auxiliary of the Centre played a major role in the development of the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre since they were responsible for preparing the food at the numerous fundraising functions and special occasions at the Centre. Come and reminisce about the old days, meet some of the former instructors, hear stories about how the ladies struggled in the past to prepare food. The evening will again feature the fabulous Japanese Canadian soul cuisine with old time favorites as well as other goodies. Bring the whole family, friends, and relatives as we celebrate the history of the Japanese Canadian experience. The festivities are scheduled from 3:00pm to 8:00pm Admission is $5 for members and $7 for non-members. Attendees who bring a recipe and a story related to the recipe for the JCCC Cookbook project will be admitted free. Pre-registration is preferred. Please call 416-441-2345 or email [email protected]

Bushi no Ichibun: Love and Honour - The Final Installment in Yoji Yamada’s Classic Samurai TrilogyBushi no Ichibun is director Yoji Yamada’s follow up to his previous samurai trilogy films Tasogare Seibei and Kakushi Ken - Oni no Tsume both of which were popular JCCC movie night attractions. All three films are based on the novels of Shuhei Fujisawa.

In this 2006 film, Takuya Kimura plays the main role as a blind samurai. Shinnojo Mimura became blind while working as a food-taster for his master. Though he had once given up hope and attempted suicide, he stopped himself for the sake of his beautiful wife, Kayo (Rei Dan). However, he finds Kayo is secretly meeting Shimada, a high-ranking samurai, in the hopes of finding financial support to maintain the house for Shinnojo. As Kayo’s sacrifice leaves him with nothing but agony, Shinnojo moves closer to his destiny.

Mark Schilling of the Japan Times rates the film 4½ out of 5 stars and calls it the strongest of the trilogy. Nominated for 10 Japanese Academy Award including including best film, director, actor, actress and screenplay.

Oh-oku: Women of the Inner Palace - Story of the Most Celebrated Romance Scandal in the Tokugawa ShogunateEnjoy the 2006 film version of the popular TV jidaigeki drama series “Oh-oku”, based on the Edo period practice of the shogun keeping a harem to bear successors. In seventeenth century Japan, the seventh Shogun Ietsugu comes to power at the age of four--obviously too young to play his role. As a result his retainers fight for the position of the Shogun’s primary supporter in hopes of surreptitiously usurping power. Meanwhile in the inner palace, the women of the ex-shogun’s are battling a similar type of power struggle. The plot revolves around a legendary power struggle, plots and intrigues between the young shogun’s natural mother--concubine to the previous Shogun--and his official wife, who must watch her stake in the bloodline fade. Directed by Toru Hayashi, Oh-oku stars Yukie Nakama (Shinobi), Yuko Asano and Mitsuhiro Oikawa.

HERITAGE LOUNGE SPEAKER SERIES “A TALE OF TWO BROTHERS:

ART AND SID IKEDA” The Heritage Committee continues its Speakers Series with an interview with brothers Sid and Art Ikeda on Friday June 29, 2007 at 7:00pm. The Ikeda brothers, born in Vancouver, B.C., were interned along with

their five brothers and sisters and parents, Masao and Tamae, first in Roseberry, then in New Denver in interior British Columbia. Art worked on a dairy farm there and attended Notre Dame high school. He arrived in Toronto after World War II, found work at “Star Cleaners” and eventually started his own roofing business, which he owned until retirement. Younger brother Sid has been an active community volunteer for more than 35 years. He was recently awarded the The Order of Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays by His Majesty the Emperor of Japan. He credits Art for supporting the family through the troubles and hardship they endured during World War II because of the internment, the sudden loss of their 42-year-old father who died at a road camp, and the family’s resettlement in Toronto after the war. Please join us for what is sure to be an entertaining evening with the Ikeda brothers and interviewer Norm Ibuki of the “Nikkei Voice” newspaper. Refreshments by Chef Shoji will be served. Admission is free and everybody is welcome.

PEACE’S NEW CENTURY PROJECT – EXTENDED TO JUNE 30TH!

Peace’s New Century, a collaborative art project currently on display in the JCCC's Gendai Gallery, opened to a 100+ crowd on May 10, 2007. Artists Masaru Tanaka (Japan) and Betsie Miller-Kusz (U.S.A.) were present at the opening. Adele Buckley of the Canadian Pugwash group spoke about the historical and political context around the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and of the threats to and instability of our current political climate. In addition to the exhibition, the artists gave a workshop and presentation on their project on Saturday, May 12. For the workshop, visitors of all ages wrote “peace” messages onto recycled papers, which were pasted onto larger papers and folded into paper cranes. Cranes made at various workshops around the world are on display in the gallery. The opening was preceded by a peace-themed concert by million-selling Japanese pop duo Cousin before 250 fans! Peace’s New Century project has been extended until June 30, 2007. For further information, please contact [email protected]

THE JCCC BAZAAR 2007A TRIUMPH OF GENEROSITY, VOLUNTEERISM

AND COMMUNITY SPIRITWhat happens when you combine hundreds of volunteers, thousands of community members and friends, countless bargains and a warm, sunny spring day? You have the 2007 Annual Bazaar! The JCCC Bazaar was held on May 5 and proved to be another enormous success. The doors were virtually bursting with the thousands of shoppers and volunteers. Not even the weekend closure of the DVP could prevent people from getting to our building and grabbing some great bargains. From high end electronics to baked goods to white elephant to art; very few people left without a shopping treasure. As one of the biggest single day fundraising events at the JCCC, the Bazaar has a few key ingredients for success. One key ingredient is the individuals and companies who generously support us with donations of items both big and small. Another key ingredient is the hundreds of volunteers; from the committee members who started planning in December, to the volunteers who helped at Mochitsuki, to the volunteers who helped setup on Friday and Saturday. Without their efforts, the Bazaar would not have been possible. The last key ingredient, but far from the least, is the community. Seeing people line up in the morning, just waiting for us to open the doors, helps to reassure us that the JCCC will be able to raise some much needed funds. We would like to offer our sincere thanks to the organizing committee, the wonderful volunteers and the community for making this year another great success.

OBON: A PLAY READINGOn Sunday, July 29, 2007 the JCCC Heritage Committee and Fugen Asian Canadian Theatre Company present a public reading of Terry Watada’s Obon: Festival of the Dead. This occasion also welcomes back the inimitable R.A. Shiomi, playwright (Yellow Fever) and theatre director of Theatre Mu in Minneapolis, Minnesota, as dramaturge and director. In a 1990s Canadian hospital, a dying Japanese woman has visions of a ghostly woman, dressed in a white kimono and straw hat. Through the use of Japanese myth and fairy tales and switching through time periods and versions of reality, Obon: Festival of the Dead, a two-act play, explores the family history. The reading will take place at 1:30pm in Multi III Room at the JCCC. Admission is free.

IN PRAISE OF SHADOWSPHOTOGRAPHY BY DARREN HASTINGS

“In making for ourselves a place to live, we first spread a parasol to throw a shadow on the earth, and in the pale light of the shadow we put together a house.” - Jun’ichirō Tanizaki

Starting this month JCCC is proud to exhibit a new series of photos from Canadian photographer Darren Hastings. The photographs were taken over a period of four and a half years while living, working and traveling in Japan. They explore animated spaces of light, spaces which speak of the energy of the culture, and spaces which are transformed by light. It is the distinctive use of light, shadow and colour that is uniquely Japanese and transforms daily life into something extraordinary, as exemplified in the ephemeral beauty of the Matsuri. These local festivals embody centuries of tradition and culture in a place which has increasingly become diluted by the influence of the west. It is through the Matsuri that one can truly experience Japanese culture. A sample of his work can be seen on this month's and last month's newsletter cover.

Philanthropic Financial PlanningIn recognizing charitable gift planning opportunities, certain defining moments or situations arise that may call for specific planning solutions.

Sometimes you will be aware of these situations, but more often than not it will be up to your professional advisor to ex-plain and recommend options that open a discussion with a client about using charitable gift planning to help solve an estate, tax and/or financial planning problem.

Charitable gift planning opportunities tend to fall into several broad categories. Often they overlap, affording the profes-sional advisor a range of options from which to choose.

It is quite common for many individuals to have the bulk of their wealth tied up in a very small number of assets. Perhaps it is a closely held family business, a family farm or other real estate holding. The individual might hold a number of stock options that are ready to mature, or may own marketable se-curities that have a low cost basis and significant capital ap-preciation. Regardless of the asset type, the client may be in a position to unlock some of the appreciation, significantly reduce the capital gains tax and thoughtfully exercise a phil-anthropic impulse, all through well-conceived charitable gift planning strategies.

When individuals seek to re-align their asset allocation to produce more income and diversify their portfolios, they will face a substantial tax on their gains. This gives the advisor and client a chance to be creative in their approach to con-verting paper gains to cash flow, saving taxes, and turning non-deductible items into ones that attract tax credits while addressing charitable objectives.

Perhaps the most opportune time to talk with an individual about charitable gift planning strategies is when doing estate planning. Based on the status of the federal and provincial in-come tax system, clients in the top brackets could pay almost 50 percent on taxable income in the year of death, depending on the tax rates of the province in which they reside.

A key strategy to lessen this tax burden is to add a philan-thropic component to the estate plan.

Unlike the annual general donation contribution limit of 75 percent of income, the limit in the year of death is 100 percent. This can result in significant savings to the estate. However, philanthropic estate planning is not done solely to reduce the burden of taxes. It is also critical for any plan to instill, com-municate and transfer the client’s values.

Creating “social” or “community” capital is a strategy that has little to do philosophically with taxes. Rather, it is the means by which the client through planned gifts to a registered char-ity sets an example for the future generation.

Many professional advisors choose this as the starting point for discussions with clients about philanthropic interests. Cli-ents are interested in philanthropy for different reasons.

A discussion about values and the family’s charitable legacy can shape and ultimately realize an effective philanthropic vi-sion. These are just a few suggestions. Financial advisors and their clients may work together to develop a variety of options to enhance the impact of an estate plan.

There are times when clients initiate the philanthropic plan-ning discussion. It is at these times when the professional ad-visor may be most helpful to the client, since charitable intent and interest have already been expressed. Understanding all the options a client has to work with will give definition and depth to a client’s philanthropic vision. They may help him/her to perpetuate a special interest in a charitable area and/or allow him/her to create a values-based plan that will involve future generations of the family.

To discuss charitable giving options please consult your financial advisor or for further information please con-tact Bill Petruck at 416-441-1234 x 225 or 416-579-0870 [email protected]
