Rationale
Aim to: build on student experience introduce students to broad range of film
(some perhaps less familiar) encourage students to gain some appreciation
of industry and audience context to films gain some understanding of how films shape
people’s views

Develop knowledge and understanding about filmStudy of film language (‘micro’, ‘macro’, how and what films communicate)Study one set genre Set genre for first examination in Summer 2009 and last examination in 2012 will be Disaster films. Gain an awareness of the contemporary film industry (mainly Hollywood) and of the audiences for film.
Exploring Film outside Hollywood
Candidates study one film produced outside Hollywood from a prescribed list in terms of:
• characters • narratives• representations • themes/issues raised by the film• how film language contributes to those representations

Four main elements:
Film ExplorationWritten exploration of ‘micro’ features in an extract of candidates choice (350 -750 words)
Pitch & Preproduction
150 word pitch for an imaginary film. This should form the basis of the preproduction tasks (chosen from a set of four options)
Production Chosen from a set of 5 options
EvaluationBrief reflective evaluation on learning about key study areas (Film language, audience and organisations)
