Why choose Art, Craft & Design?
Are you creative and imaginative? Do you enjoy exploring ideas and looking
at things in different ways? Do you enjoy making? If so, you should consider a
course in Art, Craft & Design. You will enjoy developing your understanding of
the visual world, learning practical skills and responding to ideas and issues in
ways that are personal to you.
The Art, Craft & Design course explores practical and critical/contextual work through a range of 2D and/3D processes and new media and technologies. Students must show that they can work in at least two of the following areas: Applied Art, fine Art, Graphics Communication, Textile Design, or Three-Dimensional Design. Practical work is produced by researching and developing ideas using drawing, digital exploration, sketchbooks and work sheets, supported by critical evaluation and an awareness of contemporary and historical influences.

Overview:
GCSE Art & Design teaches students about a range of different materials and techniques in order to create art. The course leads to an Art GCSE and follows the same pattern of projects and assessment as students will be familiar with from Key Stage 3 Art. Example outcomes might include drawing, painting, 3D work, printmaking, graphics and textiles. and knitted jewellery. In addition, students are encouraged to experiment with unconventional materials. Final outcomes are both two and three dimensional. Students work to produce a creative sketch book full of ideas and development drawings plus links the work of influential artists/designers as it relates to the work in progress. This course is for students who have imagination and creativity.
Assessment: Component 1: 60% of qualification A portfolio of work comprising 2 mini-projects showing development of skills and personal responses. Carried out over 4 terms -Sept Y10 - Dec Y11 Component 2: 40% of qualification Externally set assignment starting in Jan Y11 with preparatory study period. Final outcome completed during a 10-hour exam in April Y11. Both components are assessed by your teacher and externally moderated by a visiting moderator from the exam board. There is no written examination for this qualification.

Where next? A qualification in Art, Craft & Design will:
• show an employer you are creative and imaginative, with original ideas and strong presentation skills. You will also have demonstrated a good level of organisation and self-awareness.
• develop the way you look at and think about the world around you.
• build your cultural knowledge and passion for Design and the Arts.
• enable you to study Art, Graphics, Textiles or Fashion at A-Level or BTEC and eventually an Arts degree such as Fine Art, Fashion and Theatre Design, or university degrees in disciplines like Architecture, Advertising, Animation, Film and Media, Marketing, Illustration, Education or Museum Work.
Additional information/ special requirements: Art work is often time consuming and may need to be completed outside of lesson time. This is an Art course and students will need to draw and paint as an element of their Non-Exam Assessment.
