LETTERSI am a Johnny-Come-Lately to the M1 Garand, although it was my first .30 caliber rifle to shoot as a teenager. I recently attended the CMP AMC class in Anniston and was able to build my own Special rifle. Mine was a late post-war SA receiver with a mix of good reparked parts. Shoots way better than I do and knocks down steel critters at 500 meters. I am pleased. Equal, if not more important to the experience, was the opportunity to volunteer at the CMP prior to my AMC class. It was a short fuse opportunity, but I was able to volunteer for 3.5 days and THAT was the cherry on the cake. I was amazed at the parts under the CMP roof. The personnel were hospitable and very helpful to a newbie who essentially didn't know the difference between a punch mark and a drawing number. I spent all my time working in the parts cage doing the bidding of my “handler,” Red. I came to realize the privilege of working with Red and the learning opportunity he provided. His work table was a sea of confusing parts that were indistinguishable to me. Red could easily sort the wheat from the chaff and in lulls would ask me to identify the differences between several similar parts. He sighed and shook his head more than not. I hope to return and see if I have done my homework. The reason for my note is to encourage anyone able to take the time and volunteer at the CMP. Mr. Johnson opined that there was about two years of material available in-house to provide shooters with M1 Garands until additional stock needs to be found. Meantime, take the opportunity and pitch in at Anniston. It was a great experience. I came away with more in my head and heart than I gave with my hands.

SERVICE: Do you have any worn-out gas cylinders gathering dust? Until now there has been only one way to salvage them by boring them out oversize & using an oversize piston. This was not too popular because of the lack of interchangeability. Now, at last someone has thought up a way to restore them to original spec! I am pleased to announce a new process, developed by myself and Frank Jardim of Vintage Ordnance, where we can bore the cylin-ders out and have them chrome plated, and then honed back to the original spec of .528. Frank gauged 10 brand new gas cylinders, and found the internal dimensions to be inconsistent, even within the same cylinder. After many months of trial & error, (18 ven-dors turned us down flat) we have finally perfected the procedure. We can restore your worn-out gas cylinders to National Match specs If you send us your worn-out cylinder, and the lock, plug, sight & stacking swivel, and $50 + $8 shipping, we will send you a restored cylinder and blued (comes out black) ancillary parts.
