who is an agrarian people to Dewi Sri

as Dewi Padi who brings prosperity

for them.

Gandrung Banyuwangi Dance

Gandrung Banyuwangi dance brought as an expression ofthank to God of people after harvest be done. This art is stillone genre with Ketuk Tilu in West Java, Tayub in Centre andEast Java, Lengger in Banyumas, and Joged Bumbung inBali.

This Dance involve a professional woman dancer whodance together with the guess especially man guess withgamelan traditional music accompaniment.

Gandrung is an art performance which is performed withthe music origin of Jawa and Bali culture mixing. This danceis done by couple between woman (the dancer) and man(guess) who is called paju.

Gandrung Banyuwangi Dance

This art which is dominated by dance with special orchestra

is so popular in Banyuwangi, located in the end of East Java, so it

is not wrong if Banyuwangi always identified with gandrung. In

fact, Banyuwangi is often called as City of Gandrung and we can

find so many gandrung dancer statue in entire Banyuwangi

region.

Gandrung usually performed in many event, like wedding

party, pethik laut, khitanan. In formal and non formal event in

Banyuwangi or other region. According to habbit, this complete

dance started on 09.00 pm and ends at 04.00 am.

The History Of Jejer Gandrung Dance

One day there were men who danced and played

music go around the villages with music players that played

small drum and tambourine, etc. and then they got a gift

like rice as their wage. (Gandroeng Van Banyuwangi 1926,

The History Of Jejer Gandrung Dance

The note of Gandroeng Van Banyuwangi not far and not different from

the story of Banyuwangis ancestor. They always say like that about at first

appear Jejer Gandrung Dance. But in different era Jejer Gandrung Dance has

changed to be New Jejer Gandrung Dance. if in old era Jejer Gandrung Dance

be danced by man, in New Jejer Gandrung Dance be danced by a girl. The

Dancer of New Jejer Gandrung Dance appeared from the story of Semi and

Mak Midhah. Semi is Mak Midhahs Son. One day Semi got serious sickness,

all of medicinal treatment has been tried by Mak Midhah to recovery her son,

but all of the medicinal treatment didnt give a result. And then Mak Midhah

sweared if her son recovered from her sickness, she would become her son to

be Jejer Gandrung Dancer. After that her son recovered from her sickness, and

then Mak Midhah made Semi became a dancer of Jejer Gandrung Dance. Since

this story till now Jejer Gandrung Dance is always be danced by the girls.

Music filler for Gandrung Bayuwangi consist of one

kempul or gong, one or two violin , two kendang, and a pair

of kethuk. The show is not complete if it doesn`t followed

by panjak or it named pengudang (spirit encouragement)

that uses to give spirit and funny effect in every Gandrung

show.

Steps of Gandrung dance show

The original Gandrung dance divided by

three steps, such as:

Jejer

Maju Or Ngibing

Seblang Subuh

Jejer

This step is opening whole gandrung dance

show. In this part, the dancer will sing some songs

and dancing by her self, without the guest. The

men guest usually only watching.

MajuAfter jejer finished, then the dancer will starts to give the

shawl to the guest. The important guest get chance first to dance

together with her. Usually the guest consist of four people to make

square with dancer in among them. The gandrung dancer will come

and invite the guest one by one to dance together with her, with

tempt movements, and this is the uniqueness of gandrung dance.

After finished, the gandrung dancer will be coming to the

onlooker and ask one of them to choose song will be played. This

show performed with interval between Maju, repen and the show

held all the night until dawn.

Seblang Subuh This is the closing part from whole the gandrung banyuwangi

dance show. After finishing the part of Maju and rest, and starting to

part of Seblang Subuh. Starting with the slow movement with full

comprehension by the dancer, and bring hand-held fan with wagged

as rhythm or even without bring hand-held fan while singing some

sad songs, for example Seblang Lokento. Mystical situation felt at

part of Seblang Subuh because this part connected to ritual Seblang

and part of seblang subuh has the healing ritual and still be done by

the old dancer. But nowadays, part of Seblang Subuh often not be

held although this part is a special part in the gandrung dance show.

Last DevelopmentGandrung Banyuwangi art still stand tough facing the pressure from the

development of the globalization era. The government of Banyuwangi

nowadays give a policy that all of students start from basic degrees to high

school must join in art class as their extra lesson. One of Banyuwangi art that

become a must to learn is Jejer dance. This is an example as an attention from

the government to the local art culture that in reality it start to disappear by the

modern art.

Since 2000, the antusiasm of local artist has increased. Gandrung based

on this group opinion is an art that consist of historical value that against the

modern era that always disturbing his existence. And now, Gandrung dance

officially become an identity of Banyuwangi tourism and followed by statue

constructing of Gandrung on every side of the city and village. The government

of Banyuwangi make a project promotion of Gandrung that will be show on

some place such as Surabaya, Jakarta, Hongkong, and some city in United

States of Amerika.
