THIS WEEK’S GAME The Cardinals enter this week’s game coming off a 21-13 preseason opener victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first event ever held at Cardinals Stadium. Starting QB Kurt Warner completed nine of 13 passes for 118 yards, two TDs, and no interceptions in three series and running back Edgerrin James carried the ball only twice before heading to the sidelines for the day. The Patriots enter the game after falling to the Atlanta Falcons 26-23 in their preseason opener. Starting quarterback Tom Brady played in one series and completed three of four passes in the drive before Matt Cassel took over from under center. This week’s game will be broadcast live across the country on NFL Network and can also be seen live in the Phoenix area on ABC-15. The Cards will travel to Chicago next week to take on the Bears in their third preseason game.

THE PRESEASON SERIES The third ever preseason game between the Cardinals and Patriots has Arizona making its first visit to Gillette Stadium and marks the first visit to Foxborough in 10 years. The last preseason contest between the Cardinals and Patriots, a lopsided 46-0 Cardinals victory, occurred on August 17, 1991. Five years prior, the first and only other time these teams met in the preseason, the Patriots defeated the Cardinals 21-16 in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, OH on August 2, 1986. The Cardinals hold a 6-5 lead in the regular season series. The last meeting, a 23-12 New England victory on Sept. 19, 2004 in Tempe came during the Patriots pro football record 21-game win streak. The last Cardinals regular season victory came on Sept. 29, 1991 when the Cardinals topped the Patriots 24-10 at Sun Devil Stadium.

Three years and four months passed since the Cardinals officially broke ground on their new stadium, but who’s counting? Cardinals Stadium opens as the most innovative stadium ever built in North America. The first stadium in North America to feature a retractable, natural grass playing field, Cardinals Stadium was named one of the 10 most impressive sports structures in the world by Business Week, before it ever hosted an event. The Cardinals opened their 2006 NFL preseason against the reigning Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers with a 21-13 victory.

KEY EVENTS OPEN NEW STADIUM

Major events mark the opening of Cardinals Stadium. Here’s a look at what fan’s can expect to see in Cardinals Stadium’s inaugural season. Sunday, September 10 – Regular season opener For the team’s week one opener against the San Francisco 49ers, fans will be treated to a special pre-game performance from Grammy-winning recording artists The Black Eyed Peas. At halftime, Cardinals Hall of Fame safety and long-time administrator Larry Wilson will be placed on the team’s Ring of Honor. Monday, October 16 – Monday Night Football The Cardinals will host the Chicago Bears in a prime-time Monday night match-up airing live nationally on ESPN. All fans will receive a Cardinals Red Cheer Towel and Hall of Fame offensive tackle Dan Dierdorf will be inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor at halftime. Sunday, November 12 – Veterans Day Celebration When the Cardinals host the Dallas Cowboys on Veterans Day weekend, the team will pay tribute to the nation’s military. Hootie and the Blowfish lead singer Darius Rucker will perform the national anthem and Cardinals safety Pat Tillman will be honored in a special halftime ceremony when he will be placed on the team’s Ring of Honor. That day, the team will also dedicate Pat Tillman Freedom Plaza that surrounds the stadium.

With every game sold out filled mostly with Cardinals season ticket holders, fans of the Cardinals opponents can no longer count on a trip to the desert to root on their favorite team. Cardinal fans dominated the preseason opener, overwhelming the Steelers fans that were able to acquire tickets. The home crowd did not go unappreciated as the Cardinals players noticed the home crowd as soon as they stepped foot on to the field. "It actually feels like home now,” said Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin. “You go out and see everyone in Cardinals' jersey or Cardinals' colors - so it's good. The fans came out and supported us. I've been here going on four years now and we haven't had that kind of crowd, so it was good.”

CARDS SELL OUT REGULAR SEASON

The Cardinals sold out of their 2006 season ticket allotment in early May following the NFL Draft, however fans did have an opportunity to purchase single game tickets. On Saturday, July 22, remaining tickets for the Cardinals 10 home games went on sale to the public. By the end of the day, only four games, including one preseason contest, had not sold out. A limited number of tickets remain for the 8/31 preseason game vs. Denver. All others are sold out.

The defending Super Bowl champions came to town on an uncharacteristically cool (89 degrees at kickoff) day at Sun Devil and the Patriot’s spoiled Arizona’s home debut with a 23-12 win, their 17tth consecutive victory. It came on a day when the Cardinals and the NFL honored former safety Pat Tillman, who lost his life while serving with the Army Rangers in Afghanistan. The Cardinals retired his jersey #40 at halftime and all NFL teams wore a helmet decal in his honor. New England opened the scoring late in the first quarter when Tom Brady capped an 8-play, 68-yard drive with a 2-yard pass to TE Daniel Graham. On the next drive, Pats S Eugene Wilson picked off a Josh McCown pass and returned it to the Arizona 30. Five plays later Brady connected with Graham again, this time on a 19-yard scoring pass on third-and-goal from the 19. On the next NE drive, the Pats fumbled at their own and DE Bertrand Berry scooped it up and ran it back to the NE 11. A pair of sacks backed the Cardss up to the 33 but kicker Neil Rackers saved the points with a 51-yard FG. Two plays later, the Pats turned it over again when CB David Macklin intercepted Brady and gave the offense the ball at the NE 42. That set up another long Rackers FG, this one a 52-yarder that made it 14-6. Just before the half ended, Rackers attempted a 58-yarder but it was blocked. On the opening drive of the second half, the Patriots marched as deep as the Cardinals 2-yard line but were held to a 29-yard Adam Vinatieri FG that made it 17-6. Arizona’s best drive of the day came on the following possession as they moved the ball 80 yards in 11 plays and punched it in on a 1-yard Emmitt Smith TD run. The big play came on 3rd-and-a6 from the NE 47 when Josh Scobey gained 42 yards on a pass from McCown. August 12, 2006 – Cardinals Stadium – (63,400) Arizona christened its brand-new, state-of-the-art stadium with a 21-13 win over the defending Super Bowl champion Steelers before a sold-out crowd of 63,400 at Cardinals Stadium. The building’s reputation as one of the world’s most impressive sports facilities was well established by the time fans got to see if for the first time and they did not come away disappointed. They had to be equally pleased with the performance of the home team. Cards starting QB Kurt Warner was 9 for 13 passing for 118 yards with a TD and no interceptions in three series worth of action (137.2 QB rating) and the Arizona defense held Pittsburgh out of the end zone until just 85 seconds remained in the game. Making his first appearance in a Cardinals uniform, all-pro running back Edgerrin James toted the ball just twice for -2 yards. Pittsburgh had the first opportunity for points when they marched to the Arizona 26 on the game’s opening drive but a Bertrand Berry sack of Ben Roethlisberger on third down backed them up to the 36 and Jeff Reed’s 54-yard FG try was wide left. Roethlisberger started the game just two months after being injured in an offseason motorcycle accident. After the missed FG, the Cardinals marched downfield and Warner converted four third-and-long passes, the last (and shortest) of which was a 5-yard TD pass to WR Bryant Johnson. Reed’s 48-yard FG early in the second made it 7-3 but in his third and final series of action, Warner led an 11-play, 71-yard drive that ended on a 15-yard scoring pass to FB Obafemi Ayanbadejo. Warner was followed in the QB rotation by John Navarre and Rohan Davey as first-round draft pick Matt Leinart remained unsigned. Late in the first half a Navarre pass was intercepted by safety Anthony Smith and that led to a 24-yard Mark Brubaker field goal as the first half expired. Late in the third quarter, Pittsburgh advanced to the AZ 22 before LB Gerald Hayes picked off a Shane Boyd pass and returned it to the Cardinals 26. From there they marched 78 yards in 11 plays and scored again on a 5-yard run by RB Diamond Ferri that ended with him hurdling a defender to reach the end zone. A 1-yard TD pass from Omar Jacobs to TE Isaac Smolko pulled the Steelers to within 8 with 1:25 to play but Arizona recovered the on-side kick attempt and salted the game away from there. Since the late 80’s being the starting quarterback at the University of Michigan has virtually guaranteed that you will one day take the field on Sunday. This week’s game will feature two former Michigan products in Arizona’s John Navarre and New England’s Tom Brady. The list of Michigan quarterbacks who made the transition from college to the pros includes such names as Jim Harbaugh, Elvis Grbac, Todd Collins, Brian Griese, Brady, Navarre and Drew Henson. While all the above mentioned players had great success in college, only Harbaugh (1987) was drafted in the first round. Brady’s success in the NFL makes it almost impossible to believe he was a sixth round-pick and Navarre, a seventh-round pick, topped nearly every record that came before as a Wolverine. Cardinals quarterback John Navarre and Patriots quarterback Tom Brady attended the University of Michigan together in 1999. Patriots quarterback Matt Cassel attended the University of Southern California with Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart (2001-2004), cornerback Justin Wyatt (2002-2004) and guard Deuce Lutui (2004). Cardinals running back Marcel Shipp attended University of Massachusetts from 1997-2000 and set school records in carries (1,215), yards (6,250), points (378), touchdowns (58) and all-purpose yards (7,759). Cardinals quarterback Rohan Davey was a fourth round draft pick by the Patriots in 2002 and was a member of the Patriots for three seasons. Cardinals defensive tackle Tim Bulman grew up in Milton, Massachusetts, approximately seven miles outside of Boston. Bulman attended Boston College High School and went on to Boston College from 2001-2004. Cardinals defensive end Tyler King grew up in Attleboro, Massachusetts, approximately 39 miles outside of Boston. Cardinals tight end Andy Stokes was drafted by the Patriots with the final selection of the 2005 NFL Draft. Cardinals quarterbacks coach Mike Kruczek was the head coach at Central Florida when Patriots cornerback Asante Samuel attended the school from 1999-2002. Kruczek is also an alumnus of Boston College. Cardinals offensive quality control coach Bill Khayat’s father Eddie was the Patriots defensive line coach from 1985-89. Cardinals offensive coordinator Keith Rowen was the offensive coordinator/offensive line coach for the Boston/N.O. Breakers of the USFL from 1993-94. In 1989, Rowen was the Tight Ends/Special Teams coach for the New England Patriots. Cardinals running backs coach Kirby Wilson held the same position for the Patriots from 1997-1999 when he coached Pro Bowl running backs Curtis Martin (1997) and Robert Edwards (1998). Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi played at the University of Arizona in Tuscson from 1991-1994. Cards DE Bertrand Berry returned from spending most of

2005 on the injured reserve by sacking Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger for a 10-yard loss on third down, forcing the Steelers to attempt a field goal.

Warner found FB Obafemi Ayanbadejo for a 15-yard

touchdown. Ayanbadejo took the short pass and found the pylon to give the Cardinals a 14-3 lead in the second quarter.

Warner finished the day after completing nine of 13 passes

for 118 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions for a 137.2 QB rating.

Edgerrin James carried the ball only two times and finished

with -2 yards on the day. Said James following the game “This wasn't a debut, this was just an obligation. A debut is when you get to see the total package and there is no way I'd let one or two plays dictate the type of player I am.”

Another Cardinals LB Gerald Hayes returned from

spending 2005 on the injured list. Hayes finished the game with a game-high seven tackles and also recorded an interception and forced a fumble.

Cards RB Diamond Ferri scored on a five-yard run in the

fourth quarter to cap the Cardinals scoring for the day.

In his first three seasons with the Cardinals, Anquan Boldin has recorded 259 receptions, topping the 100-catch mark in two of those three seasons. Boldin was the fastest player to reach 200 receptions, hitting the mark after only 34 games, two ahead of the previous record holder Lionel Taylor (Denver, 1961). Taylor was also the fastest receiver to record 300 receptions, hitting the mark after 54 games. Boldin averages 6.4 receptions per game. At that rate, he would hit the 300 mark in his 47th game (at Oakland on October 22). It would also make Boldin the fastest receiver to reach the milestone. Now entering his third season with the Cardinals, head coach Dennis Green has revamped the team’s roster and built a foundation for success. Injuries ravaged the Cardinals in 2005 as the team placed a league-high 15 players on injured reserve. Of the 15 players placed on IR, at least seven figured to be full time starters. FITZGERALD LOOKING TO REPEAT ‘05

Larry Fitzgerald’s 2005 season was one that receivers dream about. The Cardinals 2004 first-round pick out of Pittsburgh was named to the Pro Bowl and set a new franchise record with 103 receptions for 1,409 yards and 10 TDs. The previous mark was set in 2003 by then rookie Anquan Boldin. Boldin also surpassed his previous team record while recording 102 receptions in 2005. Fitzgerald tied Carolina’s Steve Smith for the most receptions in the NFL in 2005. The franchise record number of catches for Fitzgerald led him to his first career Pro Bowl in 2006. Fitzgerald accompanied Cards kicker Neil Rackers who set an NFL record with 40 field goals in 2005. Along with Boldin, the receiving duo combined for 15 100-yard games in 2005, breaking the previous team record of 11 set in 2001. Of Fitzgerald’s 103 receptions, 27 of them came for 20-yards or more, ranking first in the NFL in 2005. Now entering his third season with the Cardinals, Fitzgerald has never missed a start in 32 games.

On March 12, 2006, the Cardinals running game literally gained an Edge. A four-time Pro Bowler and coming off back-to-back 1,500 yard seasons, Edgerrin James provides a boost to a Cardinals rushing attack that finished 32nd in the NFL in 2005. In seven seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, James led the NFL in rushing twice (1999 & 2000) and finished in the top five among rushers four times. Entering his second season as the Cardinals offensive coordinator, Keith Rowen provides consistency for a Cardinals offense that has endured turnover in the position for years. Rowen is the first offensive coordinator to hold the position for two consecutive years since 2002. Under Rowen’s guidance, the Cardinals offense ranked #1 in passing and 8th overall in 2005. The Cardinals relied heavily on the pass (66.7% of total plays) in 2005. WARNER ENTERS YEAR TWO

Entering his second season under center for the Arizona Cardinals is two-time NFL MVP quarterback Kurt Warner. Warner inked a three-year pact with the Cardinals on Valentine’s Day, 2006 after signing a one-year deal for the 2005 season. Warner fueled the Cards passing attack in 2005, recording the highest completion percentage in team history (64.5%) and led the Cards to the #1 ranked passing offense in the NFL for the first time in team history. A nine year veteran of the NFL, Warner suffered a knee injury in the Cardinals game in Houston last season after starting the game by completing 10 of 10 passes. Warner missed the final two games of the season. In last week’s preseason opener, Warner led the Cardinals to a touchdown on their first drive of the game, a five yard pass to wide receiver Bryant Johnson. Warner also connected with Obafemi Ayanbadejo for a 15-yard touchdown in the second quarter. For the game, Warner finished by completing nine of 13 passes for 118 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.

WARNER STREAKS TO END ‘05 Before exiting the game at Houston on 12/18/05 with a knee injury, Warner had completed all 10 of his pass attempts for 115 yards with a 20-yard TD. At the end of the previous week’s game vs. Washington, he connected on his last two and combined to complete his last 12 pass attempts, three shy of the team record. The NFL record for consecutive passes is 24, set by Donovan McNabb over a two-game span in 2004.

CARDS NOT ON THE ROAD AGAIN!

For the first time since the Cardinals moved to the Valley, the team will not hit the road for the first week of the regular season. Due to the extreme temperatures in Arizona in early September and the previous lack of air conditioning, it was impossible for the Cards to host a week one game, or an afternoon preseason game. Both have changed this year thanks to the new Cardinals Stadium which features a retractable roof and full air conditioning. CARDS DRAFT LEINART With each of the first nine selections in the 2006 NFL Draft, it became more and more obvious that Heisman Trophy winner and two-time National Champion quarterback Matt Leinart was going to be available when the Cardinals selected at #10. Leinart gives the Cards a long-term plan at quarterback while Leinart can gain valuable experience under a two-time MVP quarterback in Kurt Warner. Leinart led USC to two National Championships while recording a 37-2 career record as a starter. His only two losses were by three points each, a triple-OT loss to Cal in 2003 and a last second loss to Texas in the Rose Bowl.

RACKERS GOING THE DISTANCE Kicker Neil Rackers doesn’t mind a long distance relationship at all. The NFL single-season field goal record holder nailed 6 of 7 field goals from beyond 50 yards in 2005 and since 2004 has hit 11 of 16 from beyond 50. With 40 field goals in 2005 Rackers placed his name atop the all-time NFL record for field goals in a single season. Rackers tied the record with a 28-yarder early in the second quarter of the 2005 season finale at Indy and broke the record with a 42-yarder in the fourth quarter becoming the first player in NFL history to kick 40 field goals in a season. Rackers went 10 straight games without missing a single field goal, connecting on 31 attempts to smash the previous club record of 11. Rackers finished 2005 with the club record for field goal percentage (95.2), field goal attempts (42) and field goals made (40).

PENDERGAST GUIDES CARDINALS D

Clancy Pendergast planted seeds in the Cardinals defense when he was hired in 2004. Entering his third season with the team, Pendergast’s defense is reaping the fruits of his labor. It should come as no surprise that Pendergast had the foresight to see the Cardinals defense from seedling to crop. He was raised on a farm in Glendale, AZ where Cardinals Stadium now sits. The house he grew up in is still standing and his father continues to farm dairy and various crops on the land adjacent to the stadium. Upon his arrival Pendergast instilled a sense of urgency in the Cardinals defense and built the unit on speed. After the addition of Bertrand Berry in free agency, the Cards addressed the need for speed through the draft, picking up linebacker Karlos Dansby (2004), and cornerbacks Antrel Rolle and Eric Green (2005). In his first season with Pendergast, Berry earned his first Pro Bowl appearance and led the NFC in sacks with 14.5 in 2004. In 2005, Pendergast used safety Adrian Wilson in a variety of ways allowing him to record eight sacks, the most ever by a defensive back since sacks became an official statistic in 1982. Prior to his arrival, the Cardinals allowed 344.0 yards per game. In two seasons under Pendergast, the Cards defense has allowed 308 yards per game on average. Injuries depleted the Cardinals defensive line in 2005 and the team took note in both the draft and free agency. The team signed defensive tackle Kendrick Clancy in unrestricted free agency and drafted defensive tackles Gabe Watson and Jonathan Lewis in the fourth and sixth round, respectively. The unit’s rank has also risen since Pendergast took over. In 2003 the Cardinals had the 28th ranked defense in the league. In 2004 the rank rose to 12th and cracked the top 10 in 2005, finishing 8th overall.

ON A ROLLE After missing 11 games in 2005 with a knee injury, Antrel Rolle entered the Cardinals 2006 training camp fully recovered and he wants to let everyone know. The Cardinals first round pick in 2005 (8th overall), Rolle was sidelined for the majority of 2005 following a meniscus tear in his knee. Rolle returned for two games at the tail end of 2005, only to have swelling in his knee sideline him again for the final two games of the year. After minor surgery in the offseason to clean scar tissue in his knee, Rolle returned to training camp in Flagstaff this summer at 100%, just ask the Cardinals offense who he has been picking off at a rate of nearly once a day.

CARDS IN TOP 10 ON BOTH SIDES OF BALL

The Cardinals finished 2005 ranked 8th in the NFL in both overall offense and overall defense. They were the only NFL team that finished in the top 10 in both. Since the 1970 merger, the Cardinals have finished in the top 10 in both overall offense and overall defense on just two other occasions. In 1984, they finished #8 in offense and #3 in defense while in 1970 they had the #3 offense and #10 defense. The last time the Cardinals offense finished a season as high as eighth was 1993 (#8) and the last time the team's defense did so was 1994 (#3). In 2004, just three teams finished the regular season in the top 10 offensively and defensively, including both Super Bowl participants. The Broncos were 5th offensively and 4th defensively while the Patriots finished 7th and 9th and the Eagles were 9th and 10th.

BERRY RETURNS

Cardinals defensive end Bertrand Berry is no stranger to adversity, or overcoming it. Originally drafted by the Colts as a linebacker, Berry moved to defensive end early in his career. Following his stint with the Colts, Berry signed with the St. Louis Rams but didn’t make it through training camp. Berry then spent 2000 out of football. After a try out with the Denver Broncos on New Years Day 2001, Berry signed with the Broncos where he spent three seasons before signing with the Cardinals in 2004. After recording an NFC high 14.5 sacks and being named to his first career Pro Bowl in 2004, Berry was on pace for another trip to Hawaii in 2005, recording six sacks in in the first eight games before suffering a pectoral muscle injury vs. Seattle (11/6/05). Berry spent the remainder of 2005 on the injured reserve but made a full recovery for the team’s offseason conditioning program. In last week’s game against the Steelers, Berry knocked off any left over rust and took Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger down for a 10-yard loss on third down, forcing the Steelers to punt.

Injuries may be a part of the game, but in 2005 no one would have expected the Cardinals would lead the league in players placed on injured reserve. The Cards lost 15 players to injury in 2005, the most in the league. The NFL average was 7.9 players on injured reserve. Adrian Wilson’s 8.0 sacks in 2005 not only led the team, they were the most in the NFL by a DB since sacks became an official statistic in 1982. It also became the first time in Cardinals history a DB led the team in sacks. Wilson, the team’s leading tackler, recorded his second career 100-tackle season in 2005 with 112 tackles and was named an alternate to the Pro Bowl. GAMES CAN BE SEEN ON NFL NETWORK

The NFL Network will broadcast this week’s game live across the country. The game can also be seen in the Phoenix market on ABC-15. This week’s game is one of only two this preseason that the NFL Network will produce live. The network will also simulcast four games across the country, except in the competing team’s markets. The NFL Network will broadcast 52 preseason games in 24 days in 2006. The network broadcasts every game except those shown nationally by the NFL’s four network partners. During simulcasts, the network will use the home radio announcers as the play-by-play voice for the first half and then switch to the visiting broadcasters for the second half. The NFL Network will begin airing live NFL games this Thanksgiving.

When the Cardinals signed Edgerrin James, not only did they acquire a new look in the backfield, but their shoes received a face lift as well. James lobbied the Cardinals administration to switch to black shoes for their uniform.
