NYSED COACHING REQUIREMENTS

Thank you for your interest Galway Central School District Athletic Programs. In order to provide quality coaches for secondary school athletes, New York State has established standards required of all coaches, volunteer and paid.

Non-certified teachers must complete the following to coach in NY State:

● A letter of interest must be submitted to the Athletic Director. ● Fingerprinting clearance through NYS Education Department's contracted provider, IdentoGo.

of initial appointment.* ● Completion of Health Sciences Applied to Coaching and the Theory and Techniques of Coaching (sport

specific) course within 5 years of initial appointment.* Teacher Coaches must complete the following to coach in NY State:

Coaching Standards

Philosophy & Ethics ● Modeling and teaching good behavior, and maintaining ethical conduct during

practices and competition ● Supporting district and Athletic Department philosophy, policy, goals, and

expectations Safety and Injury Prevention

● Abiding by preseason, eligibility, and tryout rules and regulations meant to ensure the safety of athletes

● Following proper procedures regarding injuries, injury reports, return to play, etc. ● Using ongoing techniques to promote proper physical conditioning and injury

prevention ● Proper supervision, use of facilities, and equipment management to ensure athlete

safety Organizational Skills

● Abiding by deadlines and requirements, being prompt and presentable ● Proper planning and preparations for practices and contests ● Correctly managing schedules, paperwork, uniforms, equipment, budgets, etc. ● Coordinating the collaborative setting of goals for the team, season, program, etc.

Teaching and Communication ● Communicating clearly and effectively with all stakeholders including athletes,

parents, teachers, administrators, media, etc. ● Properly introducing, explaining, demonstrating, and instructing sports skills and

techniques ● Facilitating the growth and maximizing the potential of each player through teaching

and the fostering of learning Sports Knowledge

● Proper understanding of the sport, rules, tactics. (Including WAC, Section II, and NYSPHAA policy and regulations)

● Sufficient pursuit of professional development, personal growth, and ongoing education

● Optimal use of athletes and their specific sports talents to increase success of the team
