The Spoilt Daughter

Once upon a time there lived an old couple. It only had one daughter. Her name was Bogdanka. The parents loved their daughter dearly and would not allow a single hair to fall from her head.

Bogdanka did not do any housework at home. She usually slept until noon. Her mother would dress her up…comb her hair…even feed her. After that she would place a rug in the room where her daughter stayed all day long. Whenever she felt cold she would start shouting:

- Take me to the fire.

Her parents would take her in their hands and bring her closer to the fireplace. Later, when she felt too hot she would continue:

- Take me away from the fire.

And they did what she asked for.

The days went by and by and Bogdanka grew up to be married. People started coming to ask for her hand in marriage but as soon as they heard she was quite lazy they went away.

One day a young man came asking for Bogdanka. Her mother started telling him: - Son, we wait on our girl hand and foot! If she is cold, we take her to the fire. If she is hot, we take her away from the fire. Will you be able to do you that, too?” - Of course, I can do this! I will do anything for her!

The parents gave their consent and soon Bogdanka and the young man got married.

After the wedding the young man placed a rug near the fireplace and laid the spoilt daughter on it. The heat was high and soon the bride felt too hot so she started shouting:

- Take me away from the fire, take me away from the fire!

Her husband

pretended he did not hear that.

When no one came to take her away from the fire, Bogdanka got up and moved away herself.

One morning the man went out to work in the field and said:

- Hey, rug, I have to go to work in the field but you cook for me and get me some meal out there.

It was lunchtime

already. Bogdanka became hungry and also started talking to the rug:

- Come on, rug! Didn’t you hear my husband telling you to cook some meal?

The rug however did not move.

The man came back

in the evening and again began talking to the rug:

- How come you did not bring any bread for me, rug? I stayed hungry all day long!

The bride said: - My husband, I told

the rug so, but it wouldn’t listen!

- Hmm, it that so?” the man said. “I will show you now, rug!

He grabbed the rug, threw it on the back of his lazy wife and started beating it.

- Oh, husband, you beat the rug but it hurts me instead!

- Be patient, woman, be patient! Let me beat it well so that it listens next time!

In the evening Bogdanka stayed hungry.

The next day the

young wife knead some bread, cooked a nice meal and brought her husband lunch. In the evening she was first to lay the table and last to sit at it.

A year passed after the wedding.

Bogdanka’s mother decided to visit her daughter and see how she lived, and whether their son-in-law was good to her.

As soon as she saw her, the daughter jumped up her feet, opened the gates for her mother and began whispering to her:

- Mother… mother…Get down to work at once. It is not like home here. Whoever does not work here, they do not get any food!.

Quite pleased, the mother said with a smile on her face:

- That's right, work my child, do all the housework for the hard-working ploughman! Now go and welcome your husband! Tell him good evening!
