HAWS SCORES 38 TO LEAD COUGARS PAST PACIFICPROVO, Utah – Tyler Haws moved up to 10th place on BYU’s all-time scoring list with a 38-point performance to lead the BYU men’s basketball team to an 88-78 victory over Pacific on Thursday.

“I thought it was a hard fought game,” BYU basketball coach Dave Rose said. “I thought our execution was good at times and our energy was good the whole game. You look at the stats and we had 17 offensive rebounds and 10 steals, and that tells you that our guys are active, involved and playing with good energy and urgency.”

Haws shot 4 of 5 from beyond the arc and 10 of 11 from the free-throw line for his 38 points, the most he has scored in the Marriott Center as a Cougar. Eric Mika tied a career-high with 20 points to go along with eight rebounds, three assists and a career-high three steals. Kyle Collinsworth added 10 points, six rebounds and five assists, while Skyler Halford also contributed 10 points.

Nate Austin added seven points, eight rebounds and two blocks. Matt Carlino finished with three points, six assists and two steals with Josh Sharp grabbing seven rebounds off the bench.

The Cougars (14-9, 6-4 WCC) and Tigers (11-9, 2-7 WCC) traded baskets early to start with BYU leading 8-7 five minutes into the game. Haws got off to a hot start scoring 21 of BYU’s first 25 points to put the Cougars up 25-16 midway through the first half. During the hot start, Haws was 8 of 9 from the field, 2 of 2 from three and 3 of 3 from the free throw line. Halford’s first points came on a 3-pointer with 8:54 remaining in the half to put BYU up 28-19.

Pacific responded with an 8-1 run before Collinsworth answered with back-to-back buckets on a spin move down the baseline for a layup and a putback on the next possession to push BYU’s lead back to seven at 33-26 with six minutes left. After a Pacific jumper, Haws got a block, which led to another Halford 3-pointer for a 36-28 lead. Austin’s putback dunk extended the lead to nine, and Haws followed with his third 3-pointer to send BYU into the locker room with a 45-34 lead at the half.

Haws finished the half with 24 points and hit 3 of 3 from beyond the arc, with Halford contributing seven points. Austin also added six points and seven rebounds.

Mika completed a three-point play after a steal by Haws early in the second half to extend BYU’s lead to 49-36. The Tigers answered with a 9-0 run to cut their deficit to four. Haws scored the next seven points for the Cougars to push BYU’s lead back to nine at 56-47 with 14:50 remaining. Carlino’s first field goal came from beyond the arc and it was followed by a Collinsworth feed to Mika in traffic as the Cougars extended their lead to 63-47.

With 10:24 remaining, Mika completed another three-point play, which was followed by a Carlino steal and a behind-the-back pass to Haws for a layup to extend the lead to 70-56. Haws’ layup gave him 33 points and 1,681 points for his career to pass Brandon Davies for 10th all-time in scoring in BYU history. Halford connected on another 3-pointer to cap a 7-0 run with Mika’s consecutive baskets giving BYU a 23-point lead with under five minutes left.

The Cougars outrebounded Pacific 35-24, with 17 being offensive rebounds, to lead to 22 second-chance points.

Dave Rose BYU head coach Dave Rose has led BYU to one of the most successful runs in program history since taking over in 2005. His career record of 223-75 ranks him second in BYU history in total victories and first in winning percentage (.748). Rose has been named conference coach of the year three times, district coach of the year twice, led the Cougars to four conference titles, six NCAA Tournament appearances, two NIT appearances, six 25-win seasons and eight 20-win seasons. In 2010, he led BYU to its first NCAA Tournament win in 17 years and the Cougars have also won at least one postseason game in the three seasons since, including a spot in the Sweet 16 in 2011 and a trip to the NIT semifinals in 2013.

Kyle of all trades In his first season since serving a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Russia, Kyle Collinsworth is averaging 13.7 points, 8.1 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.6 steals per game. He is proving to be the most versatile player in the WCC, especially in league games. Through nine WCC games (as of 1/26/14), he ranks in the top 10 in the four of the five major statistical categories: 11th in scoring, 3rd in rebounding, tied for 2nd in assists and 2nd in steals. He is also top 12 in four other categories: 7th in FG percentage, 2nd in offensive rebounds, 11th in assist/turnover ratio and 7th in defensive rebounds.

30 the old fashioned way Tyler Haws scored 31 points against Loyola Marymount while hitting 9 of 19 from the field and 13 of 14 from the free throw line. He joined Brandon Davies (33 vs. Weber State on Dec. 15, 2012) as the only other player to score 30-plus points without hitting a three since Keena Young scored 34 vs. UNLV on March 10, 2007. The last BYU wing/guard to score 30 without hitting a three was Travis Hansen on Jan. 5, 2002 when he netted 30 against Pepperdine. Prior to Hansen, the last guard to score 30-plus was Marty Haws, Tyler’s father, on Jan. 4, 1990 vs. Hawaii.

The mythical 5x3 and the 4x3+2 A 5x3 is when a player records at least three in each of the major statistical categories (points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks). Only one BYU player – Rafael Araujo – has recorded a 5x3 since blocks and steals were first recorded beginning with the 1977-78 season. He did so with 24 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks and 3 steals vs. Wyo-ming on Jan. 19, 2004. Kyle Collinsworth has joined 11 other BYU players who have fallen one stat shy of a 5x3 and recorded a 4x3+2 (at least three in four of the categories plus two in the other). He had 11 points, 13 rebounds, 7 as-sists, 2 blocks and 5 steals at Pepperdine and 20 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals vs. LMU. Danny Ainge (2), Lee Cummard (6), Brandon Davies (3) and Greg Kite (2) are the only others to record more than one 4x3+2.

Fantastic freshman Big man Eric Mika is having one of the top freshman campaigns in BYU history. He is currently ranked in the top 10 in several categories in the BYU record book, including: scoring (7th), rebounding (6th), field goal percentage (2nd), of-fensive rebounds (3rd), double-figure scoring games (T-7th) and consecutive games scoring in double figures (2nd).

Rose among the nation’s best Dave Rose is 10th in career winning percentage among active NCAA Division I head coaches (as of 1/30/14).
