PERSONAL STATEMENT

As a highly motivated and dedicated person, I have developed a rigorous interest in designing and advocating sustainable ecosystems that negotiate environmental, social, cultural and political influences, to produce vibrant projects. Through my work, I aspire to facilitate a rich and educational dialogue between the environment and its occupants by implementing bold interventions utilising art, sculpture, colour theory and interactive landforms. I have thoroughly enjoyed my engagement with Landscape Architecture and aspire to continue that participation far into the future.

CLOUSTON

CLOUSTON is a multi-disciplinary practice, comprising landscape architecture, urban design, landscape planning, landscape ecology and horticulture skills. With CLOUSTON I was exposed to multiple projects of varying scale from concept design of a section of the Pacific Highway to construction documentation of large temporary campsites in Darwin. On the right is a selection of images from some of the projects I have been involved with during my time with CLOUSTON. In the Sydney office I worked on mapping exercises in Sydney, concept design package for the Pacific Highway upgrade, fee proposals, 3D imagery for sea level rise in Macquarie Lake (NSW). I have been in the Darwin office for 3 months where I have been working on multiple projects including residential commercial concept packages to construction packages of varying scales.

The Fresh Kills Park is an exciting landscape to design artwork functioning as clean energy infrastructure. The pleasant open landscape and amount of available space allows many possible of recreational activates. However, as wonderful as this vast open landscape is, there is a prominent dilemma staring us in the face. The United states has the largest municipal waste generation in the world (followed by Australia). With a waste generation of over 760kg per person per year, which equates to an average of 2.082kg per person per day. With the Freshkills New York City with a population of approximately 8.1 Million therefore generates approximately 1686573.42kg of waste per day.

People do not realise the intensity of the amount of garbage we produce and the effect on our landscapes directly and indirectly.

This project proposal aims to create a landscape with garbage at the center point of the Fresh Kills Park. ‘Garbage landscape architecture’ ‘Garba-tecture’ communicate the Land Fill Gas (LFG) system above the ground. The purity of the hills of ‘garbage’ and the amount of land filll that is in the area is astonishing, visitors to the site should be aware of what they are walking over and amidst. The proposal includes informational or educational mirroring the elements of the system below the ground but enlarged and vibrantly coloured.

These elements including: pressure gauges, coloured pipes, valve points, monitoring information (coloured poles), some cuts into the earth showing the layers of the system and a coloured grass (ornimental grass- pennisetum-setaceum )which mirrors the pipeline below it and gas utilization converters. The site could also be used for research into different ways the landfill sites could beused for gas production or other garbage related investigations.

An estimate of the energy production in the North area equals57,280,509,794 kWhs over 15-20 years.

An estimate of the energy production in the East area equals126,123,383,110 kWhs over 15-20 years.

Jardin de metis A Memory of Childhood

This project was a competition entry to the Jardin de metis in Canada in 2011. The project aimed to combine a memorable experience or journey and contemporary forms of art. Using the journey of ‘Winne the Pooh’, the English fictional anthropomorphic bear created by A. A. Milne, and ‘100 Acre Woods,’ the forest in which the story is situated.

This garden is a contemporary ‘take’ on the old English story, with spaces representing the places of interest in the story. The journey has no boundaries with no direct path but visitors can discover the places as they voyage through. Each place different in some way with the use of contemporary materials, technology and colour.

There are lights in the mist creating shapes and colours on the water particles along with signs dotted through the site with quotes from the Winne the Pooh story evoking emotions and memories and creating memories. Visitors have the opportunity to follow the river (recycled glass) through the site, to sit down and reflect or to wander the site and discover.

Eastern Broadacre Project

This project was my final year project. The brief included information about the Eastern Broadacre which is the eastern area of land in the ACT (Canberra, Australia). The site holds many opportunities as an employment corridor, with the available landscape resources and entrance to capital city. This is a main entrance way into Canberra through road, rail and air. The visual appeal of further development was an important aspect to consider.

The place chosen for this development is Fyshwick. The landscape character of Fyshwick presents itself as an industrial landscape with retail, warehouses and commercial services inhabiting the landscape. The role of Fyshwick is to provide for mixed commercial, motor vehicle sales, service and home improvement businesses with a metropolitan catchment. The sites are large for manufacturing, wholesale, storage and transport related activities requiring good access to the airport, and also bulky supplies retailing with good access to major transport corridors and a cluster for regional food enterprises. The area has over 1500 businesses, products and services.

The path I choose to follow with this project looked at the issue of sprawl, sustainable communities and urban development.

Eastern Broadacre Project

This project explores a conceptual landscape development re-sponse, by densification and diversity of zoning. Through rezoning the existing subdivisions of Fyshwick without expanding. But also recreating, promoting, regenerating and harbouring a sustained public environment. This is projected in creating mixed use zones, improved infrastructure and public interventions.

Courtyards and Laneways

After looking at existing building footprints, existing space sur-rounding the buildings was significant and included wasted space in many places. Analysing the opportunities the area was divided conceptually segregating areas through the roads and open spaces which includes parking spaces, waste areas and vacant blocks.

Developing the concept by gridding the area through placing large courtyard spaces where the existing vacant space is and medium and small courtyards within a 200 meter radius. Connecting each of the spaces and inverting to create the building footprints and laneways. Buildings must have a greater than 70 degree angle with a minimum of a 2m facade, the remaining footprint will be a soft landscape continuing the effect of the laneway.

Lakeside Space and Transport

There are generators to each section of the lake including, the pon-toon walks, with pavilion and BBQ areas, the exhibition or look-out building and the amphitheatre. Introducing a tram line which runs through the original train track, and up along Gladstone Street through the new development and back down a green spine at the entry to the new development zone. The tram line has the opportu-nity to connect with Brindabella Park and the airport to surrounding suburbs for people to live in the area and work close by.

Hyde Park Urban Space

The course focused on using the program Processing 1.0.5 and aimed at creating generative algorithmic design techniques toward a new understanding of formalness; as a higher-order of complexity premised on the specific encoding of low-level design intentions, rules, relationships and behaviours. This workshop explored how design intention and strategy can be embedded deep within the formation of design, and it is through these local interactions that systemic geometries, aggregations and orders can emerge. The workshop introduced concepts and design techniques that aid in the development of a coherent design methodology.

Following the initial Processing 1.0.5 explorations, a proposal was made to translate the ‘generative’ systems into the built environment. A place underneath Hyde Park in Sydney was proposed as a case study, creating additional space in a dense urban environment without removing any of the existing built fabric or open public space.

The project mapped the coordinates of each existing tree in Hyde Park, and once inserted into the software program revealed an undulating surface accommodating for the trees and their roots present above the roof. The bigger the tree, the larger the force imposed on the mesh. On occasion, a very large tree would exert enough force on the mesh to create structural columns for required to support the roof canopy.

This project was a group project as a result of an intensive digital design subject which was conducted by Iain Maxwell and Dave Pigram from Supermanouvre.

Queensland Energy Resources Stuart Shale to Liquids Project Visitor Centre

‘QER is an integrated resources and energy company. They hold mining and other tenement rights to several of the largest and potentially most productive oil shale deposits in Australia.’ This project was completed privately after graduating from the University of Canberra.

Located at Yarwun, about 15 kilometres north of Gladstone in Central Queensland in Australia. This project was a visitor centre demonstrating the technology used in creating new fuels for Australia . The main purpose for the Visitor Centre is to demonstrate to the community and to governments that the technology QER has chosen for producing shale oil is superior to the technology previously used for this purpose in Australia. The focus is to ensure the community has information available about the development of new fuels and where information and educational resources will be readily available. The design concept I proposed was to work with the surrounding landscape and use natural materials and native planting.

Queensland Energy Resources Stuart Shale to Liquids Project Visitor Centre (continued)

The client was very open to suggestions and was happy with my response as long as it was within the budget for the landscape which was $200,000.

The concept I developed also worked with the QER values as presented on their website of a ‘safe, economically viable and sustainable development’. All design should incorporate these values anyway, however we should pronounce this information for the public awareness especially for this particular project.

The site was divided up into 5 separate zones, each with their own importance. The front entry and the direct surroundings of the buildings were focused on, the design creating a natural aesthetic through the materials chosen. The soft landscape is ‘mulched’ with the shale stone which is used in the production of the shale oil and the planting features a variety of native architectural plants (see images beside) and some boulders placed naturally through the zones.A secondary zone proposed playful mounds of turf which directed the visitors sightlines toward the utilities and provided a fun picnic space. The remaining zones were native planting similar to the main zones with less ‘feature’ planting.

The design process which I completed included :

• Submit a proposal for services and schedule of rates• Submit a concept for review• Site analysis & visit• Sketch Landscape Plan• Final Landscape Masterplan• Partial plans for each zone• Details and specifications• Landscape scope of work for construction• Maintenance report

Jamison Aged Care Village

Jamison Aged Care Village is located in north western Canberra. With this project I aimed to create a distinct environment for the elderly people who where to move into the village. An environment which would encourage and stimulate; space to walk around, exercise, plant herbs or create a personal green wall and green lounges to bring the indoors outdoors.

The concept include dynamic contours that weave thorough the site creating both an interactive and informing environment. The arrangement of the contours allow for a distinction between the private patios and public interior walls of the complex. The contours are not steep enough to cause problems for the elderly residents, but allow the choice of more rigorous exercise. The residents can choose their path throughout the site this can be a steady walk or a heart rate raising activity. These contours also creating a sense of place and when leaving the pathway creates an interactive feel.

The urban lounges maximise social activity, creating spaces to exist outdoors, with varying seating arrangements facing each other and surrounding environments. The lounge aims to create a relaxed atmosphere, the square of turf taking an organic form as if the grass is a sheet draped over the forms of the chairs.

The aim of the vertical planter boxes is to be used by the residents, with a variety of plants (herbs, grasses). The boxes can be easily removed to maintain and replace the plants. These can be on both the interior courtyard and the exterior walls of the complex, thus allowing the residents to add their own personal touch to their homes.

Wedding Ceremony Landscape

The concept of the wedding landscape is to create a space in an already beautiful environment.

The areas of the wedding space divided into smaller spaces or ‘rooms’ for the proposed uses. Each space aims to create a sense of place for the user. The bridal entry will be a beautiful entry into the space with a flowing creek and beautiful tropical foliage in the surrounding. The entry road will be hidden from the ceremony space utilizing dense foliage to screen the road, this to make a statement entry for the bride when they walk down the aisle.

The entry road divides into carpark and bridal entry both signed to ensure no confusion upon arrival. The guests will arrive driving through or over the existing creek and park into one of the 22 car spaces. Then walk across the road towards the house through thickly planted gardens and around into an open space which is designated for reception and other events. The guests then are directed to the corner for the ceremony which is designed to fit 100 guests plus a stage space and 1.8 m aisle.

There are multiple photography opportunities, the densely planted rainforest, tropical foliage colours and flowing clear water with the backdrop of the beautiful mountains in the distance. This will also include a boardwalk along the crystal, clear water in the creek for guests and photo opportunities.

Harris Hobbs Landscapes

Harris Hobbs Landscapes are a Landscape Architecture practice started in 1985 in Canberra, Australia.Projects range through residential, commercial, municipal and institutional.

I worked with Harris Hobbs Landscapes from July 2008 on a part time basis while at University, and I began full time at the end of 2009 after graduating.

I was involved with many projects whilst with Harris Hobbs Landscapes. The following images are examples of the work during this time.

During this time I worked on many different plans including- landscape sketch and final plans, landscape management and protection plans, tree assessment, tree retention and removal plans , lifestyle shots.

Woden Flood Memorial was a project I completed beginning with the sketch plan and followed through to construction. This project was a memorial for a group of children who were playing in the waters when a flash flood swept through the area.

The display housing was a project in a new suburb in Canberra. There were 10 display houses to complete each for a different building design company.
