Oriental Strings
What better than a pentatonic ear-worm to hook the orchestra right away?
Oriental Strings is based on a 16 measure melody that is orchestrated differently with each repetition (in an epic style).
It is a fun piece to perform while offering an interesting approach to some of the basic string techniques.
Viejos Tiempos
Viejos Tiempos was composed in 2007. The piece has been performed in North and South America and in Europe.
It is a 6-minute long piece for string orchestra in the style of Barber’s Adagio.
The composition was inspired by my adventures as a young traveling musician.
It can very well serve as an overture or a filling piece in a tonal concert.
Viejos Tiempos has been performed by professional and student orchestras.
Ready for Battle
It takes discipline to become a good musician. But to stand up after a breakdown you need more than that.
Ready for Battle tells the story of a musician who doesn't give up on her dreams. She is committed to beat the obstacles and fight for a chance to reach her ultimate goal.
The piece is about courage, passion, and the inner warrior who lives inside all artists.
I dedicate it to my students who were the first to hear it live.
Mati
I first performed Siegfried's Idyll as an undergrad, and when I learned that Wagner wrote it for his wife after the birth of their son, I knew I'd do something similar when it was my turn.
In the same spirit, Mati is a lullaby for my firstborn Mateo. The piece took me a bit over a month to write and it resembles the tenderness and innocence of our young Mateo.
Elegy for String Orchestra
Elegy for String Orchestra was composed by César Avilés over the course of one year, being finished in the summer of 2015. The piece takes the listener through the stages of losing a loved one unexpectedly; it was written in memory of the composer’s mother.
The composition begins by setting the atmosphere of the tragic event. A sorrow section follows presenting the first theme with high weeping strings.
This theme transitions through contemplative harmonies into an angry forte (the loudest section of the piece). The music proceeds to a meditative segment in which the memory of the lost one is echoed. A peaceful and serene ascent is then presented in the final part of the piece.
The elegy concludes with an ambience of acceptance and hope.
