CFD as a Tool or Analysis

    o Complex Geometry

There is a constant development and expansion o CFD usage in the industry today.

Hence, certain issues need to be addressed as they are requently encountered. Numerous

complex fow topics today require computer cluster networks due to the vastness andcomplexity o control volumes and fow processes respectively. This requirement is not

accessible or all companies. Secondly, the implementation o commercial CFD codes in

minor industrial companies is generally utilized as a black box based on the knowledge

on fuid mechanic theory. In addition, increased partnerships between industry and the

academic world involving various CFD based design processes generally yields to a verbal

communication interace. It is a vital step to ampliy the communication process given

the act o the level o dependency between both sides.

The aim o this thesis is to present methods o CFD analysis based on these issues.

In paper I, the CFD code is utilized as a communication tool in an integrated design

process. The design is conducted on a limited geometry in an internal duct system o a

heat pump tumble dryer. The design was perormed by a CAD-engineer in which the

geometry modications were based with visual data and assessed with two design criteria.

In paper II, volume-averaged equations were implemented in a tube-n heat exchanger in

order to simulate and calculate airfow and pressure drop respectively. The purpose o the

volume-averaged equations was to eliminate the arrangement o n and tube bundles with

the intention o reducing computation time.
