The age of the smartphone did not kill off the alarm clock radio. The venerable bed-room fixture now fills a tidy niche for people who prefer better quality sound than a generic smartphone speaker can afford.

This exploration of a new alarm clock radio concept went through several iterations of styles and refinements before settling on a final design style that reflects the warm simplicity expected of an appliance adapted to the new smartphone generation.

The city of Manila’s rapid growth in the last decade has created rampant urban sprawl in which transportation providers often have to improvise at a high ecological cost.

The LT-35 responds to these new challenges with an indigenously-styled and locally-built light public transport vehicle that will serve the livelihood of local transportation providers and ease the burden on the environment.

In 2009 I personally experienced the massive urban flooding brought about by Tropical Storm Ketsana (Filipino: Trophical Storm Ondoy) as it crossed the Philippines.

The lack of urban planning resulted in floodwaters lingering for several days along Manila’s many feeder rivers, with tons of floating debris serving as vectors for diseases.

The LC-1 Amphora responds to these challenges as a rapid deployment inflatable-supported debris collector, which will remove as much floating debris as it can from floodwaters and transport them to special removal points near dry ground.

The LC-1’s specifications were developed in conjunction with naval engineer Raymund Puso in order to ensure the vessel’s seaworthiness.

Initial concepts and candidates were designed and evaluated to fulfill five different design attributes:

Velocity: speed of task completion

Durability: reacting to immediate dangers

Utility: diversity of operational functions

Capacity: maximum operational load

Endurance: repeated use and storage

The LC-1 Amphora is designed to be deployed from strategic locations where floodwaters have the most potential to linger. These locations are easily accessible from feeder rivers.

Once at the designated zone, the LC-1 lowers a ramp configured with a conveyor belt that collects trash into the main compartment area for sorting.

The compartment area is lined with a special net to contain the entire load, and can be divided into compartments for sorting.

The crane in the center of the boat then lifts the closed net to transfer the collected debris to a drop-off point. The crane can also aid in retrieving large debris sections.

The inflatable pylons on each side of the boat add buoyancy and help increase payload, while also serving as a passive safety mechanism against people who might be trapped in the floodwaters for any reason.

Concept Statement

In late 2009 I worked with a group of students to design installation furniture for the recently constructed School of Art and Design (SDA) Building.

Each group of students in the class was assigned to design a piece of furniture characteristic to their respective floor’s major.

Designing for the Industrial Design Department, which resided on the 5th floor of the 14-storey building, we went with a 5-pointed design that not only represented the program, but could also be used both indoors and outdoors.

The Petalo modular seating unit is designed to provide casual short-term seating for indoor and outdoor environments. It can be constructed from renewable or recyclable materials and can withstand wear and weather.

Each chair unit can be attached individually around an enclosure that can be filled with plants, lighting and other static fixtures.

Concept Statement

In late 2010 I was tasked to design a piece of furniture along a “cultural fusion” theme between indigenous Filipino and a culture of my choosing.

With the 2012 phenomenon entering popular culture and the rise of South America as an economic and cultural power, I drew inspiration from ancient South American culture.

Each “layer” of this bedside drawer is constructed of a different material, and can be rotated or re-arranged to the customer’s personal preferences. Each section also features a different style of storage.

The prototype was built in cooperation with Hacienda Crafts, for display at the 2011 CebuNeXt furniture showcase in Cebu, Philippines.

As part of a class assignment I was tasked to create a new design in a popular product category. I chose to design a desktop printer, which I believed was an otherwise inconspicuous and mundane appliance that took up considerable space.

I went with two different design directions: the first utilizing sharp angles and simple polygons, with the other using continuous curves.

I chose the second design, and drew influences from printer concepts using recyclable materials. The printer was designed with as many components derived from renewable or biodegradable materials as possible.
