Social MediaSocial Media is an extremely effective way to deliver information about events happening at the school. When used properly, it is beneficial for students, staff, parents and the wider community. Can I please remind all users of our school Facebook page that posting inappropriate and disrespectful comments is not acceptable. If you have any issues that you would like to discuss please ring and make an appointment to see myself, Jenna Hewlett or Dianna Pickert. Can I also please highlight to parents that if your child is having issues with cyber bullying outside of school hours, we are very limited in how we can help you.

If your child is the victim of cyber bullying you need to raise your concerns with SAPOL. The advice we will also give parents is to keep copies of the messages, block the person who is doing the cyber bullying, deactivate your child’s Facebook account and make contact with SAPOL.

Please feel free to contact either Jenna, Dianna or myself if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s learning at Whyalla High School.

STUDENTS INVOLVED IN NEW SCHOOL DESIGN

On Thursday May 2, six students were invited to attend a session to discuss with the architects for Whyalla’s new $100 million high school, what they would like to see included in the school’s design. Students participated in a variety of activities including a conversation about where they learn best, where they feel challenged, and what they like most about their current school. The session wrapped up with students writing notes starting with ‘Dear Architects’ to identify their biggest wish for the new school.

Will Faulds said he would like to have an arts focus in the new school, and smaller class sizes to make it easier for students to concentrate during lessons. “The schools we already have do have a big focus on science and sports, it would be great to have a focus on arts subjects like music and performing arts” he said.

The architects said that students provided an interesting perspective about what is important to them in a school and in the different learning environments. These sessions occurred with students and teachers from across Whyalla and were essential for the architects to gain an understanding of the Whyalla community during the design process for the new school.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP DAY Last term, the Student Voice Team took part in Whyalla Student Leadership Day run by Michael Edgecombe, from Doing Life Together Innovation and Consulting, and Gail Rostig from the Whyalla City Council.

This was an engaging experience for all 14 students involved to develop and understand their leadership potential. Students learnt about different perspectives of each other and themselves such as viewing the world through a broken window or through a heart shape, with compassion. They discussed that the value of

someone is not taken away by the story in which they live and engaged in activities demonstrating this connectedness and overlapping of stories.

Students created artwork which reflected themselves through a compassionate window, with local artists showing examples of their self-reflections.

The middle session was composed of learning about what made a good leader and student-lead discussions. One element of being a good leader was to know your ‘Why’ or purpose. Students reflected and responded insightfully to questions such as what are you passionate about? What stirs your soul? And what is something you wish you could do every day? Taryn Fay (Student Voice Leader) commented that these questions “...make you dig deeper than surface level, finding out what do you really want to do?” Cooper Jacobs also mentioned that he “...learnt a lot about myself”. Students visualised the process of finding their purpose, growing with others to establish change and cast longer term visions. They eagerly participated in interactive activities to develop their skills in producing new and inventive ideas and creations.

At lunch time students were provided with a BBQ lunch and participated in outdoor activities. Activities included playing totem tennis, giant Jenga, supersized connect four as well as taking advantage of dress ups and instant photos. Other students chose to enjoy the sunshine by relaxing on the bean bags and eating popcorn provided by the Youth Advisory Committee (YAC).

During the afternoon, students looked at the importance of different emotions and how they can manage them. It was discussed how they can recognise what fills up their wellbeing ‘tank’ and what things drain their ‘tank’. Students engaged in discussions surrounding strategies they could use to fill their tank as well as categorising worries and concerns to better prioritise issues they have control over.

The students thoroughly enjoyed the interactive day and have taken away with them insightful concepts to reflect upon and develop further.

YEAR 10 OUTDOOR EDUCATION CAMP On March 7, in term one, the year 10 Outdoor Education class travelled to Mambray Creek for a quick overnight trip. The students familiarised themselves with camping equipment and hiked two different bushwalking tracks. Students weaved their way through Hidden Gorge, within the Mount Remarkable National Park. They also climbed up to the summit of a nearby hill, where they could see Point Lowly across the gulf. They came across many different wildlife species including kangaroos, emus, eagles, goannas and kookaburras.

WASSAC CARNIVAL Students from across the Secondary Alliance demonstrated brilliant sportsmanship, athleticism and exemplary behaviour at the Western Areas Secondary School Athletics Carnival held in Port Lincoln on March 18.

Whyalla finished second in the Division A tournament. As a team the Whyalla Under 16’s group won the A grade pennant for most points. Individual congratulations must go to Storm Collins under 14 ‘B’ Aged Champion, Hannah Ewings under 15 ‘A’ Aged Champion and Jake Murray under 16 ‘A’ Aged Champion. Jake also broke the high jump record with a jump of 1.90m.

ATTENDANCE HOUSE POINTS Students are reminded that houses are rewarded for attendance. Any student whose weekly actual attendance is 95% or higher receives two points for their team each week.

LOST PROPERTYThere is a massive pile of lost property sitting in Student Services. If your child has lost jumpers/

hats or anything else, please call in to Student Services and check through the ever growing pile of lost property.

F1 IN SCHOOLSThroughout the first semester, a class of year 10 students have been engaging in activities related to the F1 in Schools competition. The purpose is to 3D model an F1 car that meets a series of technical regulations, document the process they went through and use CO2 canisters

to race them against other schools.

Some of the other tasks students have been working on include:

• creating a racing team logo/slogan using digital design programs

• deciding on colour patterns that they can use to decorate their car

• sketching design ideas for the 3D models

• conducting research around key principles such as drag, resistance, aerodynamics, mass and downforce.

In week 3, students will have the opportunity to race their current car designs and see what modifications could be made moving forward.

This program also aims to develop skills in problem solving, project management, communication, presentation, teamwork, innovation, self-promotion, collaboration, marketing and entrepreneurialism - all of which will greatly benefit these students moving into their latter schooling year.

Based on the groups the students have formed, they have the opportunity to enter the South Australian F1 in Schools competition which takes place at the Royal Adelaide Show later this year. The students involved are enjoying the program so far and are really looking forward to the opportunity to compete at the Royal Adelaide Show.

One year (1948 I think it was), we decided that a 16mm movie camera would be a desirable acquisition and the houses undertook to raise money for its purchase. It so happened that that year the Australian film Kangaroo was being produced at or near Port Augusta, with Maureen O’Hara and Peter Lawford as stars. Through the film company’s public relations officer we were able to arrange for the four leading house money-raisers to go to Port Augusta to meet Miss O’Hara. She proved to be not only a beautiful young woman but also a very likeable one. No doubt the lucky students have since told this story to their children and grand-children.

activities which were non-competitive,

and which contributed to the general

enthusiasm for school life.In summer Bert Mitchell led the whole

school down to the beach each day for

swimming lessons - only 300 yards away.

This was only possible because we were a

The music program was a great outlet for my desire to be centre of attention. I was given the opportunity to perform vocally and, to my mother’s surprised delight, I didn’t embarrass myself in a number of solo, duet and small group vocal performances in annual concerts. I really tried to put myself out there in music, and managed to also perform on flute and piano. The combined schools’ Stage Band was a great place to meet students from other schools and go off on fun band tours. An absolute highlight was travelling to Dreamworld in Queensland, performing in the morning, then having free reign over the rides all afternoon. My performing career began in music, but through school arts and culture trips to Adelaide, I was able to start appreciating theatre. Although I never studied drama at Whyalla High, this exposure was a huge influence on me and I have since performed in many shows in Australia. I’ve also written, produced and performed my own work in Scotland and Australia. If it weren’t for these opportunities at Whyalla High, I doubt I would have started my love affair with being on stage.

Someone must have done something right in the classroom too, because as my love for reading and writing was fostered, I started to consider a teaching career for myself. Although I didn’t go from high school straight into a teaching degree, here I am, ten years later, teaching English at a brilliant high school in Adelaide. I had some incredible teachers at Whyalla High who took a real interest in me and my learning. Comments which seem small at the time can stick with students and influence their future. I will be forever grateful for all of the support and opportunities I received at Whyalla High.
