Scholarship Success

I am delighted to announce that Max Faulkner is the first ever recipient of Stowe School’s new Golf Scholarship – and he is, I believe, the first ever Spratton pupil to have been awarded a golf scholarship to any school. This is a tremendous achievement and many congratulations to Max. Max is an outstanding golfer who has won and been runner up in the Stowe Putter over the last two years, in addition to him winning the National Prep Schools Championships. It is wonderful to see someone of his age so dedicated to his sport and I am sure he will go on to do great things with his golf at Stowe and beyond.

Bett Trip

I am sure those pupils going to the Bett Show (British Educational Training and Technology Show) at the ExCel London tomorrow will have a wonderful time. They will have the oppor-tunity to look round and test out/play with the most recent advances in technology and return home, no doubt, clutching many ‘freebies’ and souvenirs.

Cross-Country

It was another very successful week in Cross-Country. In our own Cross-Country Relays that we hosted on Monday, out of 12 schools, our Junior Girls came 1st, Junior Boys and Senior Girls 3rd and the Senior Boys 5th – a very successful afternoon. Well done to every single run-ner in our team.

Match Attax Cards

‘Match Attax’ cards have again become very popular in recent weeks, particularly in Year 3. Unfortunately, however, this craze has followed the usual pattern of school crazes, that of starting out as a fun diversion, but growing into something where the children are ‘wheeler-dealing’ a little too much and a considerable number of cards have, disappointingly, ‘gone missing’. Unfortunately, I have to ask that from Monday these cards are no longer brought into school. We would be very grateful if you could ensure that your son/daughter does not bring any in – thank you.

Visiting Headmaster

Mr Alistair Land, Headmaster of Repton, is speaking in assembly next Friday at 8.50 am. As always, parents are welcome to attend and then meet with Mr Land afterwards over coffee.

Thank you

On Monday we held the annual Spratton Cross-Country Relays where we were joined by 12 other prep schools who battled it out in the Jun-ior and Senior races.

Well done to all of the teams who competed, especially our Junior Girls (A) team who came 1st in their race.

Mrs Pearce

Yvette Pearce, a Teaching Assistant in Pre-Prep, talks to three Year 8 pupils, Ellie Barton, Tom Hampden-Smith and Joe Sterling.

What did you do in the Navy and what was it like to work in the Navy?

I worked in the Navy for eight years and it was a great experience. I worked within a small team for a Captain and then an Admiral. Back in 1991 I was one of the first WRNS to go to sea. I was one of 64 women out of 1500 crew members on HMS Invincible.

What is your favourite part of the school day at Spratton?

My favourite part of the day is the whole day because I get to work with lovely young children. The children I work with are great charac-ters and very funny.

What hobbies do you like to do outside of school?

I like indoor cycling and boxing to music. I also go and watch Wales playing rugby whenever I can.

What is the most exciting thing you have ever done?

When I was in the Navy we used to do exercises to practice carrying out rescues. One time in was in a helicopter and I was dropped down to the boat and winched back up to the helicopter 6 times!

Now for the ‘quickfire’ questions:

Favourite holiday destination? Lake Garda in Italy

Favourite sport to play or watch? Rugby

Favourite drink? Red wine

Favourite gadget? Fitbit

Favourite meal? Any food!

Favourite day? Saturdays

Favourite television show? Dr Who when Matt Smith was the Dr

Favourite film? Pride and Prejudice

Favourite website? http://www.boden.co.uk/

Finally, can you describe yourself in 3 words? Short, bubbly, chatty

Cross-Country: County Championships On Saturday 21st January, 11 of our Year 6 and 7 pupils were selected to run for the South Northants area in the County Cross-Country Championships. It was a great opportunity for our pupils to compete against the very best runners in Northants County. We were excep-tionally proud of everyone’s effort and determination to complete a very challenging and fast course in very cold conditions.

Special congratulations goes to seven of our pupils who have gone on to be selected to represent Northants County in the East Anglia Championships later this term.

Well done to Jasper Cooper, Oliver Barbosa and Roderick Dewar in the U13 Boys’ Race and to Flor-ence Hooper and Rebecca Eales in the U13 Girls’ Race.

Olivia Williams also collects a bronze medal for coming 3rd overall.

Wandering into Year 1 this week, I was met with the sound of desperate voices, whispering urgently “Tell the camels to turn

back, the Nile is overflowing,” and “I can see Cairo, go back to the pyramid and tell the others.” Gathered around a large open

tray, filled with sand and Egyptian themed objects, a group of children were completely immersed in their ‘small world’ play.

The term ‘small world’ is often used in our Reception and Year 1 classes – it simply refers to the acting out of scenarios, from real

life, imagination and/or stories, within a miniature play scene which has been created using small figures and objects. Small

world play supports children’s development in numerous ways – it allows them to

develop their topic and everyday language skills within a meaningful context, en-

courages creativity, boosts confidence and supports their social development by

helping children to connect with each other through sharing and responding to ide-

as, working collaboratively and expressing their thoughts. All in all, a tray full of

sand, pebbles, bark chippings, shiny paper and play people, small world play is an

incredibly powerful learning tool.

Coming up very soon, on Thursday 9th February from 3.00pm – 5.00pm is our ‘Pre-

Prep Book Viewing Afternoon’. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to come

into school, to share in and to celebrate, the work that their child has completed

since September. Parents may come to view books at any point within the allotted

time. Should you be unable to attend, your child’s books will also be available to

view during the Teacher/Parent Consultation Evenings after half term.

Finally, as the last of the kind donations of sponsor money for our ‘Spellathon’ has

come trickling in, I simply cannot thank you enough for your support. We only un-

dertake this special event every three years and it never fails to overwhelm me how

supportive you are as parents – not just in helping to collect sponsorship, but also in

helping your child to learn their spellings in preparation for the Spellathon. We real-

ly couldn’t do it without you, so thank you! The children were delighted to see

Kathryn Brown and ‘Buddy’ from the NSPCC back in the department today and are

even more excited about their return next week, for the big reveal of the total

amount we have raised. I will, of course, be making the very proud announcement

in next week’s newsletter.
