New Seating in the Childrens DepartmentIn early 2009, theModesto Library
requested that theFriends purchase sixLunella Stackable Seatsto be used under RyansReading Tree in theChildrens Department.Board membersapproved the use of
Friends funds for this furniture and so the order was placed. Those seatsfinally arrived at the start of Januaryand what a glorious splash of color they add to the Childrens Department.
The seats, intended for small children to sit and enjoy reading or browsingthrough library materials, are soft, bouncy cushions that can be sat upon, slidupon, and carried around by children of all sizes. Designed by EnricoBaleria and Denis Santachiara for Baleria Italia, theyre a practical andusable example of Italian design. With washable covers, the LunellaStackable Seats are sure to be a hit with kids at the Modesto Library for years to come.

Literature Rack Donated by Tuolumne River Woodworkers
Thanks to Richard Philpot and members of the Tuolumne River Woodworkers Association(TRWA), the Little Shop now has a lovely literature rack on which to place books for sale. Theracks are designed so that smaller books can fit easily in the top tier of the rack, leaving spacein the bottom rack for those larger-format books we offer.
The TRWA, a nonprofit local organi-zation for individuals who like towork with wood, has a strong com-munity service orientation. In addi-tion to tackling numerous outreach
projects throughout the year, TRWAmembers create more than a thou-sand wood toys annually for distribu-tion to children in our community. For more information about TRWA,
please visit trwa.net.
Book lovers rejoice--the Friends of the Modesto Library is holding the first of what we hopewill be an Annual Used Book Sale to benefit the Modesto Library on May 1, 2010. Many yearsago, when this Friends group first started, we used to hold used book sales. However, for the
past fifteen years (at least), the used book sale had fallen by the wayside. But now we're back, scheming to raise money for the Modesto Library, and planning to have a great time in the
process.
The Friends Used Book Sale is scheduled for Saturday May 1 on the Modesto Library Porticofrom 10 am to 3 pm. We're looking for good-condition used books and other media (DVDs,videos, etc.) which you may not need. What better way to dispose of your unwanted/unusedreading material than donating to the Friends so we can raise funds for the Modesto Library? Please contact Clare Noonan at [email protected] if you have items to donate.

Anyone else out there an insom-niac? Reading helps me slow
down and drop off to sleep. Unlessthe book is too good to close, thenreading until midnight finishing a
book makes wake-up time cometoo early for me. My solution is toread short stories.
The Modesto Library arranges itsshort story collection two ways.An authors collected works, say a
book of stories by Poe, will be
shelved with his other fictionworks. But if you dip into the un-known, try the other location - the
Short Story Collection . It ishoused against the wall behind the
regular fiction area and includesgenres like mysteries, science fic-tion, women authors, time periods, and best of volumes. If youthink youve read everything onthe library shelf by your favoriteauthor, you may be wrong. Usethe library catalog and look up theauthors name using the AnyWord search. You may find other
shorter works in one of the ShortStory Collection editions. Pleasantdreams!
