Friends of Farallone View Parent Teacher Organization (FOFPTO)

What We Do The FOFPTO funds academic and enrichment programs for EVERY student at Farallone View. We collaborate closely with the teachers and school leaders to bring hands-on Science, Music, Art, Physical Education, and Recess Activities to all students. The PTO also sponsors many of the perennial favorite events, like Continent Day, the Talent Show and Oceans Week, and many other fun activities for the whole family and community. These programs would not exist at our school without volunteer time and donations provided by you, our dedicated parents. You Are Part of the FOFPTO We often hear the question “Who is the PTO?” Everyone - all parents, guardians and grandparents of children at Farallone View - is part of the FOFPTO. And the PTO welcomes everyone to our community. Our monthly meetings are open to all. We encourage you to join us to help steer the programs and decisions that impact your child’s experience at school. The PTO meetings are typically scheduled for the first Tuesday of every month, from 7-8pm. Starting this year, we will also hold bi-monthly coffee /tea get-togethers after drop-off on the campus.

Stay Informed There’s always a lot happening at Farallone View. We have created a few touchpoints in order to stay up-to-date with all that is going on.

- Sign-up to receive our weekly “Splash” email newsletter at www.fofpto.org or email [email protected]. We’ll also have a sign-up sheet at events during the start of the school year.

- Be a part of our private Facebook community by becoming a member of the Farallone View Parent’s page; just send a request to be added via Facebook, and you’re in! And please, feel free to invite others to join, post your thoughts / questions, and participate in the conversation.

Get involved Become an active part of the Farallone View community. Our events happen due to the time and effort dedicated by parents like you. Volunteers are needed for each and every event – there are always ways to help. And there are many parents and teachers to help you if this is your 1st time volunteering. Farallone View is a living example of the saying ‘it takes a village’. Let us know your interests via the “Volunteer Interests and Pledge” BLUE FORM, found at the back of this packet or online at fofpto.org.

The FOFPTO Contribution to Our School

As parents, grandparents, guardians, care givers and local community members, we care deeply about our school, our children and their education. The FOFPTO recognizes the need to provide for aspects of education and learning which are not funded by the district or the state. The programs and events listed below happen due to the support provided by the FOFPTO. Over two-thirds of the budget is spent on Science, Music, Physical Education and Art. The support is created, driven by, mobilized and provided by you…parents, grandparents, guardians, care givers & local community members. Everyone and anyone can make a difference. This exemplifies the spirit at Farallone View. To realize all of our planned programs and events for the 2016-2017 school year, we will need to raise $108K. All money raised is spent within this school year. Below represents the breakdown of income & expenditures for the 2016-2017 school year.

The FOFPTO Board Members

The FOFPTO Board Members are a collective of parents who work together throughout the year. We want to help all students and families transition into the new year, and are always here to answer any questions, listen to your ideas, and continue to build the Farallone View community. A bit about our Board Members, so you can get to know us. We look forward to getting to know you.

Katie Aschero is Co-President and a mom of 2 – Sarah, a 1st grader & Mason, a future Farallone Viewer. This is her 1st year on the Board, after leading the Winter Festival as a K parent. What's it like to be a parent at FV? As many kinder parents, I had many emotions going into the school years. From the 1st moments at FV I felt right at home, from the teachers, other kinder parents & parents of older kids, everyone went out of their way to make my family feel welcomed. What are you doing when you're not doing stuff for the school? I divide my time from running after my silly wild child 3.5 yr. old and working full time as an RN. When I have a little time, I love to spend it hiking or being with friends. What's your favorite FV event? I love them all! The jog a thon is so sweet, seeing the kids running their hearts out with such dedication is an awesome sight. I ran the Winter Festival last year and loved the spirit of the day, everyone so happy. The Auction is fun, I love seeing fellow parents in a new light sans kids and all dolled up! What prompted you to get involved in the PTO? I get to be creative, collaborate with other parents, plan events, help do great things for our kids. My husband & I feel passionately about public school & the hard work teachers, staff & parents put in to make it the best for our kids. I also like that I get to see my daughter during the school day and get to know her friends and classmates. She lights up when she sees Mama on campus doing something, it's really sweet.

Sarah Bunkin is Co-President and mom of 3 – Josie, an 8th grader @ Cunha, Jaya, a 5th grader & Weston, a 3rd grader. This is her 4th year as PTO President. Her contributions to the school are countless. What's it like to be a parent at FV? I love being a parent at Farallone View

because it is such a warm, welcoming place. What are you doing when you're not doing stuff for the school? I am a former HS

Social Studies teacher and now I work PT mentoring new teachers through the Beginning Teacher Support Assessment Program at Cunha and HMB High School. I also enjoy running, playing tennis, reading and learning new things. What's your favorite FV event? My favorite FV event is probably the Jog-a-thon

because I love seeing the kids running and smiling, at the same time. What prompted you to get involved in the PTO? I was inspired to get involved

because the teachers & staff work so hard and have done so much for my kids. They motivate & inspire me. Also, education is one of my passions so being involved at fills many of my needs & loves.

Amie DuBois is the Treasurer & mom of 1 -Nathan, a 1st grader. This is her first year on the PTO Board. What's it like to be a parent at FV? I feel honored to be a parent here. It's such a close community, & parents play a huge role in shaping the activities & experiences of their children. Administrators & teachers are eager to establish a relationship with parents & kids. It's been a positive experience for me & my family. What are you doing when you're not doing stuff for the school? My professional work is as a public health nurse and I interact with families, children and the community on a daily basis. Outside of work, I work in our garden at home. What's your favorite FV event? I love Continent Day! I have such admiration for the comprehensive knowledge the teachers & students achieve every year. Everyone shows their creativity & depth of learning during this event! What prompted you to get involved in the PTO? I was asked to get involved by another board member, and I felt it was a good way to meet other parents, give time to the school, and expand my knowledge!

A bit about our Board Members, so you can get to know us. We look forward to getting to know you. Shawna Montoya is the VP of Fundraising, and mom of 2 - Sofia, a 4th grader and Gabby, a future FV student. This is her 2nd year in this role, in addition to chairing the Auction. What's it like to be a parent at FV? I cannot put into words the adoration I have for the teachers, staff, parents, grandparents & children of FV. Our family has been so humbled by the outpouring of love from this community after my daughter had her cardiac arrest at school in April 2016. Our school may be small, but we are mighty. I's pretty awesome to be a parent at FV! What are you doing when you're not doing stuff for the school? Taking care of my 4-year-old, Gabby, running errands, or working at my law practice. What's your favorite FV event? The Talent Show! I love the level of excitement that builds prior to the event as all of the acts audition, practice & rehearse. Then, on the night of the Talent Show, nothing compares to ALL of the kids cheering loudly for ALL of the acts. It makes you realize how much they all support each other. What prompted you to get involved in the PTO? Our family came to FV mid-year when my daughter was in 2nd grade. I wanted to meet parents & learn what the PTO funded and did. I attended a few meetings as I was curious and a position opened up as VP of Fundraising. Since I'd already volunteered to Chair the Auction, it made sense to take that position. I've enjoyed meeting parents from all different grades and having fun while raising money for the PTO, which in turn funds so many wonderful events for all the students at FV.

Julia Ferdinand is the co-VP of Events, and mom of 2 - Mia, a 4th grader and Cruz, a 1st grader. This is her 1st year on the Board, after chairing the Jog-a-Thon and being there in some way, shape and form for each & every event. What's it like to be a parent at FV? A blessing on many levels. The FV families are my tribe. Without family nearby, they’re the people I lean on, learn from, & love to spend time with. The teachers are an extension of our family - the time & energy they give to our children is as valuable as our contribution as parents to enriching their lives. The school is the location of many family memories from school activities to both our kids learning to ride a bike on campus and the start of lifelong friendships. What are you doing when you're not doing stuff for the school? I’m an event planner @ Walmart.com. We put on 30+ events a year so the office is a fun place to work & come to every day. I recently started as a consultant for Rodan + Fields skincare which is a fun gig I can do from home. If I have free time that’s just for me, I like to go to flea markets or garage sale-ing. What's your favorite FV event? I enjoy them all. Continent Day is such fun - parents get together to create these amazing experiences & you can see how much the kids love to visit all of them & how appreciative they are. The Jog-a-Thon has a special place in my heart, as I’ve organized it for the last 3 years. It’s awesome to see the kids, teachers & parents rooting each other on & I’m blown away by the generosity of the FV friends and families! What prompted you to get involved in the PTO? The friendships I have formed make the PTO a natural extension of my life as a FV parent. This is a community & you aren't alone in any role you take on at the school. Plus, my kids love to see me involved & I love to see them around school.

A bit about our Board Members, so you can get to know us. We look forward to getting to know you. Aleyta Meldrum is the co-VP of Events, and mom of 2 - Sofie, a 1st grader and Jack, a future FV-er. Farallone View is her alma mater and she has been connected to the school throughout her life. This is her 1st year on the Board. What's it like to be a parent at FV? I went to Farallone View so it's pretty incredible to be a parent here. I feel like I‘m one of the lucky few, to raise a kid in this school, in this town, with my village. So I would say it's fan-freaking-tastic to be a parent at Farallone View :) What are you doing when you're not doing stuff for the school? We love taking mini trips. We go camping, to Reno, Windsor, Carmel or any place a few hours away where we can make new memories. I love photography, thrifting, traveling and reading. And time spent at the beach with friends is a good time! What's your favorite FV event? Book Fair. It's a fun place to volunteer. You can help kids learn about money, spending and also get in a little shopping yourself! 3 shifts = $10 in books! What prompted you to get involved in the PTO? There's something in Sarah Bunkin’s (PTO Co-Pres) coffee. Don't drink it or you will find yourself volunteering for everything and anything.

Kate Kostzewa is VP of Community Building, and mom of 1 – Devin, a 2nd grader. This is a newly created position on the FOFPTO Board, to bring together all communities within the school. What's it like to be a parent at FV? I love being a parent at FV bc it’s a small school with a lot of parent involvement and a wonderful team of teachers & administrators, all of whom work cooperatively with the students & parents to provide the best possible environment for making learning fun. My favorite part of my day is walking my son to school each morning & experiencing all the wonderful kid energy on the playground as the children wait for the 8:30 bell. When it rings, the kids run at top speed to line up to go into class. Better than the strongest cup of coffee for starting your day off with an energy boost! What are you doing when you're not doing stuff for the school? I’m taking care of my son and cheer him on the soccer field. I also spend a lot time at my law office in HMB helping my clients with their estate planning. In my free time, I like to exercise, garden, socialize and keep up with current events.

What's your favorite FV event? I really like the Jog-a-Thon because I enjoy standing at the corner of the track & cheering on ALL the kids as they run their laps. They all do such a wonderful job and have so much fun, as can be seen by the big smiles on their faces each time they pass me. I give every kiddo a quick low five and a lot of encouragement. It is a really really fun day for me. What prompted you to get involved in the PTO? My parents taught me that getting involved is truly rewarding. I have a long history of volunteering so it has just become a part of who I am. When my son started at FV, I immediately started volunteering in his classroom. Getting to know ALL the kids in his class has been a real highlight of helping out in the classroom. I hope to be able to do throughout his years at FV. As I got to know the staff and other parents and how things work at the school, I decided to join the PTO. Participating in the PTO seemed like an excellent way to be a part of making FV the best possible place it can be for all the children who go there.

We want to help all students and families transition into the new year, and are always here to answer any questions, listen to your ideas, and continue to build the Farallone View community. A bit about our Board Members, so you can get to know us. We look forward to getting to know you.

Christina Frediani is the Secretary, and mom of twin boys – Anthony and Luca, 1st graders. Both she and her husband attended Farallone View. This is her 1st year on the Board. What's it like to be a parent at FV? Being a parent at FV is incredible. My husband & I are FV alumni and it's like stepping back into time for us. Showing our boys where their aunts, uncles, and cousins learned & played is truly a gift for our entire family! What are you doing when you're not doing stuff for the school? I like to spend my free time at the beach watching

my boys boogie board, collecting seaglass, laughing with my girlfriends, and traveling whenever I can! What's your favorite FV event? All of the events were a blast, but I have to say Continent Day blew me away! I loved seeing children excited to learn about different countries. The crafts, exotic foods & visiting all the themed classrooms were amazing! What prompted you to get involved in the PTO? I was approached after a girls’ night out with fellow board members. How could I possibly say no? :-) I like to help as much as I can in the classroom and events throughout the year. It's great to be a part of a committed group of staff & parents helping to make FV a great experience for all of our children.

Lisa Phelan is Communications Director and mom of 2 – Kai, a 6th grader @ Cunha, and Aaron, a 3rd grader. This is her 3rd year on the Board. What's it like to be a parent at FV? Being part of Farallone View is very special. Our boys have attended several other schools, and nothing compares to the connectedness felt at FV. What are you doing when you're not doing stuff for the school? I started up my own business when we moved to Montara, and I’m often experiencing the wonderful roller coaster ride of running a start-up. I also love to spend time in the unmatched beauty of the coastside, just walking through the trails or along the beach. What's your favorite FV event? So hard to choose – Continent Day is phenomenal…every classroom becomes its own world and the kids learn so much. Oceans Week brings new perspective to the environment in which we live. Yet, my all-time favorite is the Talent Show…watching the kids transform and emerge on stage is so touching. What prompted you to get involved in the PTO? To be honest, I was not volunteered at my boys’ prior schools. I was working in the corporate world & didn’t have flexibility to do so. Once we moved here, I randomly, uncharacteristically volunteered @ the Book Fair, and met some great people. So little-by-little, I started to get involved in other events and was eventually invited to be part of the Board. Never in a million years would I have ever expected to be part of a PTO, but am endlessly appreciative to have this opportunity to contribute to FV.

Words of Wisdom

Brilliancy From Kindergartners Real Talk From Parents Years of Experience From Our K Teachers

The 1st day was scary, fun, exciting, sad and happy all at the same time.

My teacher is my friend, she loves all of us and makes us all feel special.

I didn’t think I knew anyone, then I saw a friend, and now everyone in my class is my friend.

I love school, I learn so much and I have fun, and I’m proud of myself.

I felt like I was going to do new things, even if I was scared at first.

Don’t sweat it if seems overwhelming at first. There is a rhythm & flow to the school year that becomes more familiar & easier to navigate

Reach out to the other parents- at drop off, pick up, at an event, volunteer when you can in class, @ events, on a field trip. These kids & parents will become family to you.

Parents need play dates too!!

Connect with fellow parents! I realized that I needed to acclimate to our new routine as much as my boys did.

Everyone has something to contribute…there is no such thing as too small or little.

The quicker the exit / the detach, the better. Even the crying ones will quickly calm down

Believe in open communication – best time to talk to us is afterschool

We understand, we are all moms. This is a gradual process of coming into the real world.

Let the kids know you think going to school, learning is a great experience.

This is our calling; this is our life and we care deeply about each & every child

5 for Farallone

Pledge Form

Volunteer BLUE Form

Will you please commit to the 5 for Farallone Pledge? If every Farallone View parent commits Just 5 Hours a year, we can do amazing things for our kids & school. All help, any help makes a huge difference for schools. The research is so clear – kids at schools with a broad base of involved parents perform markedly better on all kinds of key school measures. We’d love to help you get involved in any way that works for your schedule and interests. What would you like to do? When would you like to do it? Involvement is for everyone: parents, guardians, grandparents, older siblings, etc. If you’d like to do more – great, but we know that’s not a possible for everyone. Please do what you can, when you can….share your talents and experiences with the school and with the children. Simply complete the Volunteer Interest & Pledge Form on the back or online at www.fofpto.org by September 11th. We’ll then be in touch with opportunities that fit your interests and availability. Together, we can make a huge difference at our school!

Yes! I pledge to give 5 hours to our Farallone this year!
