KEY TO SYMBOLS

Top Rated: The horse with the best chance based solely on past form, specially tailored to a 0-100 scale.

Horses For Courses: A suitable track for the horse, compared to its lifetime record on similar courses as defined by Timeform’s course data.

Jockey Uplift: The engaged rider has a notably higher Timeform Jockey Ranking than those who’ve ridden the horse on its most recent starts

Trainer Form: A hot trainer to follow, based on Timeform ratings-related measurements looking at the recent performance of runners.

Going: Good

The Grand National course is triangular with its apex (at the Canal Turn) the furthest point from the stands. Inside is the Mildmay course which has birch fences. A major feature of the Mildmay course is its sharpness, though the fences are stiff and it’s a tough jumping test. The Grand National is run over two complete circuits taking in sixteen spruce fences first time around and fourteen the second. Alterations to the fences in recent times have had the effect of making it a less severe test of jumping than used to be case. Since 2013, the run to the first fence in the Grand National was reduced in a bid to also improve safety, resulting in the overall race distance shortening from the usual 4½m, though the run-in is still 494 yards long and includes an elbow.

Pace Information: Insufficient Data

1 COPPER COIN (43) 10049/3611- 8 11-6 | 72.6kg

Michael Scudamore Tom Scudamore Shed maiden tag in a handicap chase at Huntingdon (19.8f) in March and confirmed he’s an improved model when running out a 5-length winner of a Wetherby novice (3m) in April. Should go well again.

2 ONAGATHERINGSTORM (IRE) (33) 99321- 6 11-6 | 72.6kg

Fergal O’Brien Paddy Brennan Winning pointer who confirmed hurdles debut promise when running out a comfortable winner of a Warwick maiden (21f) in April. Further progress forthcoming up at 3m.

3 LALOCHEZIA (IRE) (6) 992 6 11-0 | 69.9kg Justin Landy Non Runner NON RUNNER.

4 MISTER SWEETS (IRE) 6 11-0 | 69.9kg Neil Mulholland Sam Twiston-Davies Scorpion half-brother to fair 2m hurdler Peltwell. Dam unraced half sister to fair hurdler/fairly useful chaser (stays 33f) Crossley Tender. Placed in points and market should guide on Rules debut.

4 DECLARED RUNNERS

BETTING FORECAST:5-4 Onagatheringstorm, 7-4 Copper Coin, 7-2 Mister Sweets

TIMEFORM VIEW:A competitive novice to kick off the card with ONAGATHERINGSTORM given the nod to come out on top. A winning pointer, he confirmed the promise of his hurdling debut effort when running out a comfortable winner of a Warwick maiden last month and this even longer trip promises to unlock further progress.

Pace Information: Even

1 MR WHIPPED (IRE) (34) 86P- 8 12-2 | 77.1kg Brian Ellison Ryan Mania Useful winning hurdler/chaser for Nicky Henderson in 2018/19. Off 25 months before pulled up in handicap chase here (25f) on yard bow 34 days ago. Needs to step forward now.

2 BALLYWOOD (FR) (69) 100336/26654- 7 12-1 | 76.7kg Alan King Tom Cannon Useful 2m chaser in 2019. Ended last term under a cloud though so he needs to get back on track now despite a falling mark.

3 HOLLYWOODIEN (FR) (62) (BF) s 953UP1/352- 10 12-1 | 76.7kg Tom Symonds Aidan Coleman Successful at Hereford last March with re-addition of cheekpieces. Only three runs since but not disgraced when second in handicap chase at Hereford (16f) 62 days ago. Shortlisted.

4 MILITARIAN (20) s 978450/38P4- 11 11-12 | 75.3kg Andrew Martin Mr James Martin (7lb/3kg) Useful chaser on his day. Has faced stiff task last two runs, cheekpieces on when last of 4 to Frodon in Oaksey Chase at Sandown 20 days ago. Respected back in handicap company.

5 MAYPOLE CLASS (IRE) (57) (D) 9312P/011PP- 7 11-9 | 73.9kg Jonjo O’Neill Jonjo O’Neill Jr. Progressed well initially over fences last season, winning handicaps around 2m4f at Bangor and Fakenham. Has failed to finish last two starts, however, so has it to prove now.

6 CAPTAIN TOM CAT (IRE) (30) (BF) 942111363- 6 11-4 | 71.7kg Dr Richard Newland Sam Twiston-Davies Completed a hat-trick over hurdles last autumn and posted good third in 2m4f handicap hurdle at Cheltenham 30 days ago. Makes chase debut now and not ruled out for good yard.

7 ISAAC WONDER (IRE) (22) b 94213/14P23- 6 11-2 | 70.8kg

Michael Scudamore Brendan Powell Scored at Southwell last summer and arrives in good nick, third of 6 in handicap chase at Perth (16f, good) 22 days ago. Needs considering now stepped up in trip.

8 EMPIRE DE MAULDE (FR) (33) (D) s 9376/172314- 7 11-1 | 70.3kg James Ewart Brian Hughes Dual winner last season at Hexham and Kelso who looked rusty after 3 months off/wind op when fourth of 6 in handicap chase at Kelso (23.4f, good) 33 days ago. Should strip fitter now.

9 SOLAR IMPULSE (FR) (23) s 961336P2P2- 11 10-11 | 68.5kg Ian Williams Charlie Todd (3lb/1kg) Has proved hard to catch right since scoring at Southwell last August, last of 2 in 2m handicap chase at Ludlow 23 days ago. Easing in the weights but others still appeal more.

9 DECLARED RUNNERS

BETTING FORECAST:3-1 Hollywoodien, 9-2 Captain Tom Cat, 5-1 Solar Impulse, 8-1 Ballywood, 17-2 Isaac Wonder, 12-1 Empire De Maulde, 18-1 Militarian, 18-1 Maypole Class, 40-1 bar

TIMEFORM VIEW:Plenty of these arrive with question marks against them so it could be worth siding with CAPTAIN TOM CAT to make a winning start over fences given he arrives in excellent form over hurdles and is in the excellent hands of Dr Richard Newland. Hollywoodien is feared most on the back of his Hereford second with Empire de Maulde also worth considering with his Kelso fourth under his belt.

Pace Information: Strong

1 COURTANDBOULD (IRE) (180) 95F/3112125- 7 11-12 | 75.3kg

Fergal O’Brien Paddy Brennan Landed three novice hurdles towards the end of last summer and was likely undone by testing ground when last seen at Cheltenham 6 months ago. Should be tuned up for this return.

2 PROSCHEMA (IRE) (30) (D) 9714/2P1151- 6 11-11 | 74.8kg Dan Skelton Harry Skelton Useful hurdler who won a pair of AW jumpers bumpers at the start of this year and put it all together when a smooth winner at Cheltenham a month. Still relatively unexposed over hurdles.

3 SEBASTOPOL (IRE) (13) s+t 100141/6582-2 7 11-9 | 73.9kg Tom Lacey Jonathan Burke Won a brace of 2m handicaps in 2019/20 and back to that level when runner-up the last twice. Solid claims.

4 PILEON (IRE) (30) (D) 944112/4PP8- 7 11-8 | 73.5kg Philip Hobbs Micheal Nolan Progressive hurdler in 2019/20. Didn’t take to chasing, though, and while latest run at Cheltenham was a step in the right direction, he still has plenty to do from this mark.

5 ASK PADDINGTON (IRE) (25) (D) h 974P2/1021- 7 11-5 | 72.1kg Tristan Davidson Harry Reed Has thrived since joining this yard and added to his tally with a career best at Hexham last month, comfortably on top of Shetland Bus. Another bold showing expected.

6 FLOWERY (IRE) (88) (D) h 93221/27- 9 11-5 | 72.1kg Iain Jardine Conor O’Farrell Has been a revelation for this yard for all he has quirks, but faces a stiff task now back over hurdles in a refitted hood.

7 BLACK MISCHIEF (741) s+t 922/ 9 11-4 | 71.7kg Harry Fry Lorcan Murtagh (3lb/1kg) Useful hurdler in 2018/19 but absent since a tame display when beaten 13 lengths by sole rival on chasing debut at Uttoxeter in May 2019. Hard to make a case for.

8 GIOVANNI CHANGE (FR) (25) 9933/P38911- 6 11-2 | 70.8kg Mark Walford Jamie Hamilton Isn’t the most fluent over his obstacles but he arrives here in pursuit of a hat-trick following a brace at Market Rasen (up to 23f). Up 10 lb and this is a rather different environment.

9 BIG BAD BEAR (IRE) (21) 981P/4P104F- 7 11-2 | 70.8kg Nicky Richards Danny McMenamin Failed to take to chasing but landed handicap at Doncaster in November. Not disgraced after 10 weeks off back at 2m when fourth at Newcastle on completed start since. Jumping regularly lets him down.

10 GOOBINATOR (USA) (35) t 9912/415F30- 5 11-1 | 70.3kg

Donald McCain Brian Hughes Generally in good form over hurdles last season and showed up well for a long way after a break at this course 35 days ago. Tongue tied and up in trip now.

11 NO COMMENT (30) t 975FF/52F09- 10 11-1 | 70.3kg Philip Hobbs Tom O’Brien Let down by his jumping over fences in 2019/20 and after starting last season well over hurdles, his last couple of efforts have been underwhelming. Too well treated to completely dismiss.

12 IRISH ROE (IRE) (29) (CD) 9532d4/80243- 10 10-12 | 68.9kg Peter Atkinson Henry Brooke On a reasonable mark and bounced back to form when third at Cheltenham last month. Won the 2019 renewal so warrants consideration despite her advancing years.

13 PRESENT RANGER (IRE) (549) t 9611P7/ 8 10-12 | 68.9kg Dan Skelton Bridget Andrews Turned a corner fitted with a tongue tie when winning all 3 hurdle starts in 2019. Pulled up on chase debut, and then possibly amiss when well beaten at Hereford next time. Off 18 months/had wind op.

14 CONSTANTINE BAY (499) 99445/ 10 10-11 | 68.5kg Brian Ellison Ryan Mania Quickly reached useful level over hurdles in 2017 for Nicky Henderson. Very lightly raced since and just fairly useful form since. Given a chance by handicapper after further 16 months off.

15 SHETLAND BUS (GER) (3) (D, BF) 988/847222-4 8 10-4 | 65.3kg Justin Landy Sean Quinlan More reliable than progressive over hurdles and only fourth in handicap chase at Sedgefield 3 days ago. Mark sums him up and this race may come too soon.

15 DECLARED RUNNERS

BETTING FORECAST:11-2 Ask Paddington, 6-1 Sebastopol, 6-1 Proschema, 15-2 Giovanni Change, 10-1 Irish Roe, 14-1 Courtandbould, 18-1 Shetland Bus, 20-1 Big Bad Bear, 22-1 Pileon, 25-1 Goobinator, 33-1 No Comment, 33-1 Present Ranger, 33-1 Flowery, 40-1 bar

TIMEFORM VIEW:ASK PADDINGTON was well on top at the finish when scoring at Hexham recently and may well have more in the locker for this stable, so he gets the marginal vote in a competitive event. Fellow last-time-out winner Proschema is an obvious danger and 2019 winner Irish Roe warrants a mention.

Pace Information: Very Weak

1 MINELLACELEBRATION (IRE) (13) (CD) 982/11UU7U-3 11 11-12 | 75.3kg

Katy Price Ben Poste Found plenty to land Summer Cup over 26f at Uttoxeter and followed up over C&D. Failed to complete on 3 of next 4 starts but shaped as if back in form when third at Uttoxeter 2 weeks ago.

2 GO ANOTHER ONE (IRE) (40) (BF) t 95F/1143363- 9 11-9 | 73.9kg John McConnell, Ireland Sean Bowen Versatile sort who looked set to play a much bigger part before his stamina seemed to run dry when sixth in the Kim Muir (26f). Creditable third in Grade 3 chase at Cork since. Respected.

3 SIR IVAN (69) s+t 95UP15/3231- 11 11-9 | 73.9kg Harry Fry Lorcan Murtagh (3lb/1kg) Not the easiest to catch right but does arrive on the back of a veterans’ chase win at Newbury in March. Up 6 lb back in a conventional handicap but he did idle that day.

4 FAGAN (34) 9770/6317- 11 11-7 | 73.0kg Alex Hales Harry Bannister Clearly retains all his ability and resumed winning ways in emphatic fashion at Newbury in January. Denied a clear run when mid-field in Grade 3 C&D handicap last month so likely remains in form.

5 JOHNBB (IRE) (34) 96316/1F2- 7 11-7 | 73.0kg Tom Lacey Jonathan Burke Progressive sort who was unlucky to bump into one in Grade 3 handicap over C&D last month. Remains unexposed so lots to like.

6 QUARENTA (FR) (25) (D) 964127B/193- 9 11-6 | 72.6kg Jonjo O’Neill Jonjo O’Neill Jr. Has shown some quirks but proved better than ever when scoring on Ascot reappearance in November. Disappointed at Ascot next time but back on track when third at Kempton, not seen to best effect.

7 TOMMY RAPPER (IRE) (34) s+t 991/2P0- 10 11-4 | 71.7kg Dan Skelton Harry Skelton Useful winning hurdler/chaser but lightly raced nowadays. Made light of 17-month absence when second in Exeter handicap hurdle and excuses both starts since. Respected back down in class.

8 POTTERS LEGEND (45) s 973P/125261- 11 11-3 | 71.2kg

Lucy Wadham Jack Quinlan Useful chaser who enjoyed a good 2020/21 enhancing record in veterans’ events at Fakenham (3m) in March. Not ruled out but he does encounter much quicker conditions here.

9 BURBANK (IRE) (34) b 98518P/1300- 9 11-2 | 70.8kg James Moffatt Brian Hughes Smart chaser for Nicky Henderson and did well for this yard last season, winning jumpers bumper and creditable tenth of 26 in Coral Cup at Cheltenham. Might have found Aintree coming too soon.

10 VERSATILITY (11) b 1009/U51260-U 7 10-8 | 67.1kg Nicky Henderson Nico de Boinville Off the mark at third attempt over fences at Ludlow and runner-up at Newbury next time. Disappointed next 2 starts but back to form at Kempton 11 days ago, most unlucky not to win. Can make amends.

11 MANCE RAYDER (IRE) (7lb/3kg ex) (9) b 95UPP1722-1 8 10-5 | 65.8kg Henry Hogarth Danny McMenamin Durable sort who’s clearly thriving at present, improving again to score at Kelso 9 days ago. However, a 7 lb penalty in much better race make him opposable.

11 DECLARED RUNNERS

BETTING FORECAST:11-2 Versatility, 11-2 Potters Legend, 7-1 Johnbb, 9-1 Minellacelebration, 10-1 Quarenta, 11-1 Tommy Rapper, 11-1 Sir Ivan, 11-1 Go Another One, 12-1 Mance Rayder, 14-1 Fagan, 33-1 Burbank

TIMEFORM VIEW:VERSATILITY returned to form from out of the blue at Kempton 11 days ago and was most unlucky not to win, in control when stumbled and unseated soon after the last, and he’s taken to make amends off the same mark. Johnbb is the obvious threat having finished a good second in a Grade 3 handicap over C&D last month, with Irish-raider Go Another One also a likely player.

Pace Information: Very Weak

1 ARENA STAR (IRE) (25) 793807- 5 11-4 | 71.7kg Neil Mechie Ryan Day Well held in bumpers and fared no better sent hurdling at Hexham last month. Up in trip.

2 BLACK MINSTER (67) 8217- 6 11-4 | 71.7kg Peter Atkinson Henry Brooke Trans Island gelding who was value a length or 2 extra as he justified support first time up in AW bumper at Newcastle in January. Too keen when well beaten at Wetherby 9 weeks later, though.

3 MY BOBBY DAZZLER (32) 9044- 6 11-4 | 71.7kg Mel Rowley Alex Edwards (3lb/1kg) Winning pointer who showed more than first time up over hurdles when 9¾ lengths fourth of 11 in a 15.8f novice at Huntingdon last time. Up in trip and may do better still.

4 QUIET FLOW (79) 905/4- 6 11-4 | 71.7kg Dan Skelton Harry Skelton Related to several winners, including useful Amore Alato. Fair form in bumpers, shaping promisingly after 15 months off when fourth at Doncaster in February. Should do well over hurdles.

5 KIMMINS (92) 10043- 6 10-11 | 68.5kg Nicky Henderson Aidan Coleman Showed promise on Lingfield debut and again when third at Kempton where she finished well after encountering traffic problems. Of strong interest now going hurdling up in trip.

6 MASTER MALCOLM (39) 843275- 4 10-10 | 68.0kg Emma-Jane Bishop Ciaran Gethings Hinted at ability in bumpers and did the same on her hurdling debut at Chepstow (2m). Should do better now stepping up in trip.

BETTING FORECAST:11-8 Kimmins, 2-1 Quiet Flow, 11-2 My Bobby Dazzler, 14-1 Master Malcolm, 16-1 Black Minster, 80-1 bar

TIMEFORM VIEW:KIMMINS caught the eye making up a lot of ground in the straight from an unpromising position in a bumper at Kempton in February and looks the type to make her mark now going hurdling up in trip. Quiet Flow looks the main threat for the Skeltons having also shown a fair amount of promise in bumpers.

1 COTTON END (IRE) (7lb/3kg ex) (5) (D) 9551511F3-1 7 12-2 | 77.1kg Sheila Lewis Ben Jones (3lb/1kg) Took another step forward when making it 4 wins in her last 7 starts at Ludlow (2m, good to soft) 5 days ago. Penalty demands more but can’t rule out in current mood.

2 PANIC ATTACK (IRE) (77) s 9510/210183- 5 11-12 | 75.3kg David Pipe Tom Scudamore Newbury handicap winner in December. Not in the same form on next 2 starts but possible she could revive after a break (had wind op). Also has cheekpieces added.

3 A LITTLE CHAOS (IRE) (41) t 98526622- 7 11-11 | 74.8kg Stuart Edmunds Ciaran Gethings Low-mileage hurdler. As good as ever after a wind op last term, finishing runner-up at Fontwell and Haydock in the spring. Likely to be in the shake-up again.

4 WHITEOAK FLEUR (82) (D) s 98524/51240- 8 11-5 | 72.1kg

Donald McCain David Bass Finally off mark when making all at Sedgefield in December. Remained in form until a poor run at Market Rasen in February. Has cheekpieces added back from a break.

5 PRINCESS T (55) s+t 9672/123105- 6 11-5 | 72.1kg Neil Mulholland Sam Twiston-Davies Two 2m wins from 6 runs last season, but ran poorly at Fontwell when last seen in March. Wears a tongue strap first time here.

6 PARIS DIXIE (48) 872577- 6 11-5 | 72.1kg Nicky Henderson Nico de Boinville Bumper winner for Julie Camacho who made an encouraging hurdling/stable debut at Chepstow last autumn. Shade disappointing but it’s still relatively early days.

7 BIT ON THE SIDE (IRE) (48) (D) 8711324740- 6 11-5 | 72.1kg Joanne Foster Gavin Sheehan Back-to-back winner of novice hurdles last summer but found life tougher since, including well held in EBF Final at Newbury in March. Has left Nigel Twiston-Davies.

8 CATCHMEIFYOUCAN (IRE) (161) (BF) 932453/4117- 7 11-4 | 71.7kg Jennie Candlish Sean Quinlan Progressive when winning 3m handicaps at Market Rasen and Doncaster (both good) in November. Got stuck in the mud on hat-trick attempt at Sedgefield in December and given a break since.

9 CEARA BE (IRE) (751) (D) 98 8 11-1 | 70.3kg Alex Hales Kielan Woods Bumper winner who improved on exploits in novice hurdles when landing a Fakenham handicap on New Year’s Day. Back from a poor run at Market Rasen when second in small-field novice latest.

10 RIVER ICON (41) (D) s 1008/4125745- 9 11-0 | 69.9kg Iain Jardine Conor O’Farrell Winner of 21f Cartmel handicap chase last summer. Another excellent effort when runner-up at Perth in September. Lost way after but definite signs of revival over hurdles at Haydock last month.

11 SIMPLY LOVELEH (45) (D) t 99921PP709- 8 10-11 | 68.5kg Dan Skelton Harry Skelton Dual hurdles winner in 2019 and scored over fences at Uttoxeter last summer. Has struggled since but mark has some down as a result. Type to bounce back at some point.

11 DECLARED RUNNERS

BETTING FORECAST:4-1 Cotton End, 11-2 A Little Chaos, 8-1 River Icon, 9-1 Panic Attack, 9-1 Catchmeifyoucan, 12-1 Whiteoak Fleur, 12-1 Paris Dixie, 14-1 Simply Loveleh, 14-1 Ceara Be, 16-1 Princess T, 40-1 bar

TIMEFORM VIEW:RIVER ICON is too well handicapped to ignore and gets the nod to build on a better run at Haydock last month. A Little Chaos has filled the runner-up spot twice already this spring and may provide the chief threat ahead of the penalised Cotton End.

1 CREWS PITCH (22) (BF) 1002- 5 11-12 | 75.3kg J. M. Ridley Mr James Martin (3lb/1kg) Winner of a point bumper in March and found just one too good on Rules debut at Exeter (16.8f, good to firm). Firmly in the mix.

2 FOXINTHEBOX (IRE) 83 5 11-12 | 75.3kg

Olly Murphy Mr James King Runner-up sole start between the flags in December and interesting to see which way he goes in the betting on this Rules debut.

3 LATITUDE (IRE) 84 5 11-12 | 75.3kg Mel Rowley Mr Tommie M. O’Brien Clear-cut winner on debut between the flags in October, but beaten a fair way on sole subsequent start in that sphere and he’s opposable starting out under Rules here.

4 TIME BANDIT (IRE) 84 4 11-6 | 72.6kg Ben Clarke Mr Darren Andrews (7lb/3kg) Second to the re-opposing If I Say sole start in a point bumper last month. No real reason to suspect that he’ll turn the tables on that rival here.

5 LATENIGHTFUMBLE 86 6 11-5 | 72.1kg T. Ellis Miss Gina Andrews Made it third time lucky in maiden points last month. Beaten in that sphere 20 days later, but worth a second look on this Rules debut nonetheless.

6 LETTIE LUTZ (IRE) t 82 5 11-5 | 72.1kg Ben Clarke Miss Chloe Emsley (7lb/3kg) Found just one too good on her introduction in a point bumper at the end of last year. One or two of these make greater appeal.

7 IF I SAY (IRE) 86 4 10-13 | 69.4kg David Dennis Mr Zac Baker Got the better of Time Bandit in a point bumper last month. Weight-for-age allowance adds to her appeal on this Rules debut.

7 DECLARED RUNNERS

BETTING FORECAST:11-4 Crews Pitch, 10-3 If I Say, 11-2 Foxinthebox, 7-1 Latenightfumble, 15-2 Time Bandit, 12-1 Latitude, 16-1 Lettie Lutz

TIMEFORM VIEW:With all but one of these racing under Rules for the first time, the market will be instructive. IF I SAY did the job pretty well when accounting for Time Bandit in a point bumper last month and, in receipt of weight from each of her rivals, she gets the nod. Foxinthebox and Crews Pitch, who found just one too good in a bumper at Exeter, rate the main dangers.
