Advantages of DCU Approach

►Low RAM requirements• No need for complete frame-buffer to be stored in RAM• Partial images can be stored at lower resolution, often 8 bpp or 4 bpp is

• Objects can move around the screen at 60 fps just by changing a register value

• Effects like rotating car can be achieved by switching between several pre-rendered images – just change the value of the pointer to memory

► Professional graphics designers, the ones who create the actual artwork and animations to be displayed on the screen, use desktop graphics packages, typically Adobe or Adobe-compatible tools, such as:

• Adobe Illustrator• Adobe Photoshop• Adobe Flash

► Graphics designers do not care about, and will never use, embedded graphics tools.

►OpenGL is an open, royalty free graphics API• OpenGL ES1.1 is a relatively mature standard, already supported by

many graphics tools vendors• Freescale products i.MX31, i.MX51 and MPC5121e fully support the

OpenGL ES1.1 API• Many tools solutions for OpenGL ES1.1 are available from third parties

such as Elektrobit, TAT, Altia, etc.

►OpenGL ES2.0 is a relatively new API• OpenGL ES2.0 adds programmable shaders, greatly expanding the

possible effects• Some third parties, such as TAT, QT, already support OpenGL ES 2.0,

others likely to add support in due course• i.MX514 and i.MX516 fully support the OpenGL ES 2.0 API
