SYD GINSBERG draws from her working class background for much of her art, as seen in one of her bronze creations entitled, “The Rock” that was on display at Galeria 19 Fine Art during last week’s First Friday Art Walk event. – Standard-Radio Post Photo

Creating art a part of lifefor sculptor Syd GinsbergMuch of Syd Ginsberg’s life has

been dedicated to creating art, espe-cially in the field of bronze sculptur-ing. Even as a young person, she knew what she wanted to do.

Several of her pieces were on dis-play at Galeria 19 Fine Art, 222 West Main Street, during the most recent First Friday Art Walk held in Fredericksburg.

“I like watching people,” she said, adding that this is an inspiration for much of her art. While she uses any setting for her sculptures, she keeps returning to one basic theme. “I just like doing people,” she said.

After studying art in high school, Ms. Ginsberg earned her college degree from the School of Art at Coo-per Union in New York City.

Her veins run rich in constructing sculptures, especially from bronze.

“I can’t imagine not doing this. I’ve always built things; I’ve always been an artist. The day I stop working is the day that I die.”

The art done by Ms. Ginsberg comes from deep within her since early in her life. She admitted that her high school sculpture teacher would sometimes write a note so she wouldn’t get in trouble whenever she’d sneak into sculpture class dur-ing some other class period.

Ms. Ginsberg came from a work-ing class family in the Big Apple. “I worked in the day, attended art school at night, five days a week,” she said.

Even during her fleeting moments of free time, she was ready to advance her knowledge of art. “I could always slip into someone’s sculpture class,” she added.

From 1949 through 1988, the work of Ms. Ginsberg was on display at galleries and art society venues, including one-person shows in New York City, Connecticut and Dallas.

She moved her studio to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico in 1988. Ms. Ginsberg travels back to the United States twice a year to visit with fam-ily members in North Carolina, New York City and Minneapolis.

But the Lone Star State holds a special place in her heart.

“I like Texas and I like Texans (because they’re) so very special,” she said, adding that the state and its people have welcomed her “with open arms.”

Ms. Ginsberg’s work is represented exclusively in Texas by Galeria 19 Fine Art, owned and operated by Mary Frances Camp.
