T he Semi-High Speed Steel roll (SHSS) is the new standard in roughing mill work rolls for high

productivity mills requiring superior retention of surface finish and extended campaign lengths. We have engineered our SHSS Work Rolls using a carefully selected balance of chemistry and heat treatment to achieve superior retention of surface texture and resistance to thermal breakdown resulting in longer mill campaigns and higher roll performance than industry standard SHSS materials.

The Union Electric Åkers SHSS chemistry falls within the alloy content range of most competitors’ full HSS products and aims to meet or exceed comparable roll performances.

The Union Electric Åkers DifferenceOur SHSS Rolls are manufactured using a well-controlled casting technology. This highly engineered process ensures an exceptional bond between the shell and core materials, resulting in high strength layers that provide superior reliability against interface-related spalling and core fracture throughout the life of the roll.

At Union Electric Åkers we offer maximum product safety and reliability through consistent application of fully automated surface and subsurface inspection techniques.

MicrostructureThe superior wear and resistance to thermal fatigue of our SHSS material are achieved through a specific chemistry and microstructure design. The microstructure consists of a large volume of complex primary and secondary M7C3 and MC-type carbide in a matrix of well refined, lower bainite and martensite. The resulting material is similar in properties and characteristics of HiCr Steel and HSS, however the primary carbide network is more discontinuous than HiCr Steel, providing improved resistance to surface deterioration due to thermal cycling. The centerline and neck of the roll are designed using a spheroidal graphite iron to achieve high strength, ductility, and toughness.
