FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER by Bob Russell

As winter approaches and 2018

draws to a close, I would like to thank

our many club members for helping

to make this another great year at

the club. I also want to wish everyone

a happy Thanksgiving and a very merry Christmas.

We are finishing up a couple projects around the

course, before the weather turns, but in general all

major work is complete.

You will see the addition of three new redwood trees

on #9 fairway near the large oak. These plantings are

in preparation for the future when it becomes neces-

sary to remove the venerable old oak tree. That may

be a number of years away, but at least the new

trees will be partially mature when that occurs.

The blue tee boxes on holes #15 & #16 are being lev-

eled, re-worked and sodded as we speak. This is a

good time of the year to complete this type of pro-

ject, to allow the new sod to grow undisturbed during

the winter months. These tees will reopen in the

spring.

The roof on the #3/#9 restrooms is being replaced

soon, before we get significant rain or snow. The driv-

ing range is now closed and we will be removing the

ball washers and water stations very soon.

As in past years, I want to remind our members and

guests that the fall and winter conditions on our golf

course are a lot different than in the warmer months.

There will be frost delays, many mornings, and we do

this for a very good reason: walking and driving on

frozen grass literally kills the grass and leaves ugly

scars for months. And: please avoid any wet or soggy

areas with your golf carts and be very careful where

you drive, this time of the year, to show respect for

your golf course.

Paul and his crew will try to keep the course open as

much as possible during the winter months, and re-

open portions of it as soon as conditions allow follow-

ing storms, but remember: even our best efforts are

controlled by Mother Nature. Thanks again to all our

members and staff for another great year and we

look forward to many more at our club!

NOTES FROM THE GOLF PRO

by Bob Reichle

It’s starting to feel like winter is just around the corner.

Come winterize the cabin, and enjoy a couple of

days of cool November mornings, and the spectac-

ular colors of fall on our perfectly groomed course.

Don’t be surprised after booking morning tee times

that, upon arrival, we may be subject to a frost de-

lay. Coffee is always available but standing around

in the cold may not be your cup of tea. You can

always call ahead to check on course conditions

and possible delays.

The back nine will be closed over the first three days

of November, so we can complete final tree remov-

al and cleanup.

We’ll continue to be open for play throughout the

winter months as conditions allow, however, as we

get closer to mid-December and the overnight and

daytime temperatures start to drop we’ll most likely

close holes 14-18 to protect the tees and greens that

get little or no sun this time of year.

If you call the golf shop during a period of golf

course closure we will leave a no-answer greeting

addressing the closure, with a tentative opening

date. If you require further information you can

always call the main club house at 795-1000.

Protocol for Reciprocal Play

When considering playing golf at other northern Cali-

fornia private facilities, here are some suggestions:

1.) Call the facility first and let them know you are a

member of a private club and are interested in recip-

rocating with their facility.

2.) Ask questions such as, will you reciprocate with

our facility, what days and times are available, may

we bring guests, what are the dress code require-

ments and what can we expect in regards to costs.

Generally at this point they will ask for a call from your

Head Golf Professional to set up a tee time. The staff

at our golf shop will be more than happy to take over

and make the call.

By doing the ground work first we can eliminate the

frustration of phone tag.

During the winter months when our facility is closed

and you need a call from us to set up a reciprocal

round, just leave a message on our phone. We check

for messages every other day and will get back to

you as soon as possible.

There are many great private clubs out there, so take

advantage of the benefits of being a member at

Sequoia Woods.

THE MEN’S CLUB By Bernie Tillotson, President 2019

It’s hard to believe that another year is almost over,

our 2018 Men’s Club events are behind us and we

are planning for next year.

I would like to start off by thanking Tom Gosswiller

and the entire Men’s Club Board for all of their hard

work to make 2018 a terrific year. It has truly been a

pleasure working with all of you. I would also like to

extend a special thanks to our retiring Board mem-

bers Vic Manuelli and Andy Thompson for the great

job they have done in serving on our Board these

past 3 years. Your contributions and dedication to

our club have been outstanding.

I want to welcome our two new Board Members;

Alan Court and Mario Perez. With their direction and

leadership, we look forward to another outstanding

year with our Men’s Club.

Your new Full Board and their responsibilities are as

follows:

Bernie Tillotson President

Alan Court Vice President

Erik Nissen Secretary

Brian Raley Treasurer

Jack Larmour Tournaments

Tom Gosswiller Membership

Mario Perez Rules & Handicap

Sid Gilbrech Ringer Board/Public

Relations

George Cook Greens

Hank Rullhausen SWCC Liaison

Jim Walton Member Liaison

I’m personally very excited about - and looking for-

ward to working with - our new Board this next year.

The Board held it’s first meeting October 15th and is

already working on the schedule of events for the

upcoming year. Your input from our annual “Turkey

Shoot Survey”, along with our analysis of the past

years’ events, are being incorporated into our plan-

ning for 2019. It is promising to be a great year.

The 2019 Calendar will be available soon, once ap-

proved by SWCC. We will continue to have our reg-

ular play days on Monday and Thursday, even

though our season and tournaments are officially

(cont’d.)

over. The new season will start on April 1, 2019, so

please get your applications and dues paid as early

as you can. You can pick up an application at the

Pro Shop or directly from Tom Gosswiller, our Mem-

bership Chair.

FInally, our annual Sequoia Woods Men’s and La-

dies’ Clubs’ Holiday Party, hosted this year by the

Sequoians, will be held Saturday December 8th. This

is always a great event and a chance to enjoy good

friends, good food and a fun time. It’s been a very

popular event, and will fill up fast, so plan to make

your reservations early. Look for your invitation, com-

ing from the Sequoians (women’s 9-hole club), in

early November. As in the past, our Men’s Club will

provide complimentary wine with dinner.

I would like to wish each of you a very joyous and

meaningful holiday season!

WOMEN’S 18-HOLE CLUB by Sharon Croswell, Captain

It is hard to believe that our competitive season is

over! In many respects it has been a good year but

in others it has been a tough year (due to illness

and a death). However, I have enjoyed being

Captain for such an amazing group of women.

THANK YOU to my board: Lynn Manfree, Jane

Lucas, Kayleen Clemens, Jackie Gutierrez, Sharon

Tussy, and Elise Hanrahan, without whose help I

could not have done this job. I also want to thank

all of the special committee chairs that made the

season run so smoothly.

On October 3rd the ladies hosted the Sadie Haw-

kins event. We had a tremendous turnout. All 26

teams started the day even though the weather

promised rain. Yes, it poured on us for about 15

minutes and then cleared up until we finished the

tournament. After we finished, the sky opened up

and poured continuously…but, we made it. When

we came off the course we had a delicious hot

lunch, with chili and corn bread, compliments of

Maureen Ryniec’s menu-planning. Thank you, Mo

Ryniec and Barbara Mehan, for doing such an

awesome job putting the tournament together!

The Sadie Hawkins game was one best ball be-

tween the pair. There were two flights, six winners in

each flight. First flight winners: 1st place Sharon

Croswell and Kevin Andel, 2nd place Betty

Hildebrand and Roger Hawkins, 3rd place Cathie

Andel and Bron Croswell, 4th place Lisa Self and

Mike Cashara, 5th place Sharon Tussy and Scott

Self, 6th place Linda Stebbins and Ed Carr. Second

flight winners: first place Kayleen Clemens and

Bernie Tillotson, 2nd place Harriet Johns and Bob

Kruger, 3rd place Irene Machado and Joe

Caccamo, 4th place Tess Leary and Karl Malmin,

5th place Gloria Jacques and Vic Manuelli, 6th

place Patty Tillotson and Dennis Clemens. In spite

of the rain, a good time was had by all.

Our last event of the year was the Awards lunch-

eon on October 7th. Awards were given out for the

Club Champion, Runner Up, and Low Net, Birdie/

Ringer, WGANC pins to the three ladies Maureen

(cont’d.)

Larmour, Cindy Gibbs, and Lynn Manfree, with the

three lowest net scores in the six WGANC tourna-

ments, and our Most Improved Golfer, Sherry West-

ernoff.

Again, I want to thank the members for all their help

and support. It has been such an honor to serve as

your Captain this year and I look forward to working

with everyone next year.

To SWCC Members Regarding

The Mountain Retreat: The current agreement that is in place is

subject to modifications as needed.

Our club members have the ability to use the

indoor swimming pool, the spa, sauna and the

new workout room (all located on the lower lev-

el) at Mountain Retreat as part of your Sequoia

Woods membership.

There is no charge to use their facility but the

use is restricted to Sequoia Woods Country Club

members in good standing. You may bring two

guests with you to the facility but you must ac-

company them—guest card privileges will not

otherwise be honored.

Likewise, you may bring your children with

you to the facility but you must accompany

them, as well. (To everyone’s understanding,

this won’t be a place to drop-off your kids to

play or to “hang-out”.) Your children are regard-

ed to be guests.

Most importantly, you’ll need to present your

permanent plastic Sequoia Woods card with

your name and number for identification. This

card is the only way you can use the facility.

Their staff will buzz the locked access door open

for our guests. (If you’ve lost your SWCC member

card please let us know as soon as possible and

we’ll send for replacements, which you’ll be

able to pick up here at the clubhouse.)

The hours of operation at Mountain Retreat

club house and recreation facilities are 8:00am

until 10:00pm summer; 8:00am until 8:00pm in off-

season (fall, winter & spring).

Our members are expected to follow all of

the rules at Mountain Retreat as well as the ac-

cepted conduct you would exhibit as a mem-

ber of Sequoia Woods Country Club.

Please contact me if you have any questions

or need further information about this new pro-

gram. I’m sure everyone will enjoy these year-

round benefits.
