The prestigious Chevening scholarshipsare offered in over 150 countries andin 2006/07 they enabled 1838 talentedgraduates and young professionals tobecome familiar with the UK and gainskills which will benefit their countries.

Chevening scholars study in the UK forat least 3 months. The majority studyfor postgraduate degrees, particularlyMasters courses. However, applicationsfor shorter vocational or professionalcourses as long as they are adequatelychallenging and relevant are alsoconsidered. Chevening scholarships canbe used to study most subjects,however in different countries theymay target a narrower range ofsubjects that are especially relevant. Inthe past, subject areas have included:

AREAS:

■ Law and human rights ■ Economics and politics ■ International relations ■ Communications, media and

journalism ■ Development and gender studies ■ Business administration ■ Public administration ■ Management ■ Environmental studies ■ Finance and accountancy ■ Science and technology ■ Medicine and health ■ Engineering ■ Computing and information

technology ■ Arts and humanities ■ Sociology and other social sciences ■ Education ■ English language training and

linguistics ■ Transport studies ■ Sports management

REQUIREMENTS:

Competition for Cheveningscholarships is intense, and only one inevery 25 applicants is successful. Atypical successful applicant would be:

■ A graduate with proven academic skills.

■ Committed to return to theircountry and contribute to thesocio-economic development oftheir country throughimplementing new skills andknowledge acquired in the UK.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:

The Chevening Scholarship Programmeis a truly global programme andoperates in over 150 countries aroundthe world. As the programme is sodiverse and far-reaching there isn't asingle timetable for applications andso it is important to check with thelocal British Council office for countrydeadlines for applications.

Although the timetable for deadlinesmay change from country to country theapplication process remains the same.

Each country will advertise when theyare inviting applications for Cheveningscholarships and will state their deadlinefor applications. Applications will not bedealt with after the stated date.

Stage 1: Applications are checked to ensure that the applicant meetsthe standard Chevening criteria (seeabove under requirements) plus anyother specified local criteria (statedon the country pages of theChevening website and in the local advertisements).

Stage 2: If an application meets all ofthe criteria for the scholarship thenthe candidate will be short-listed andthe local office will invite them toattend an interview.

Stage 3: Candidates will beinterviewed by a panel ofinterviewers – normally consisting ofa member of the British Embassy orHigh Commission and a member ofthe British Council.

Stage 4: As the competition forscholarships is intense and fundslimited, it is not possible to recommendfor all successful candidates the lengthof award and level of study requestedon their application.

Any award of a Scholarship isconditional on the following:

■ confirmation from the Foreign andCommonwealth Office in Londonthat the nomination is acceptable;

■ there being sufficient fundsavailable;

■ the British Council being able to place candidates on a suitable course;

■ the British Council being satisfiedwith the results of a medicalexamination which candidates will be asked to undertake prior to departure.
