Steam ResistanceVICTREX PAEK polymers and compounds are not chemically attacked by water or pressurized steam. These materials retain a high level ofmechanical properties at elevated temperatures and high pressures in steam or water. The table below demonstrates the ability ofcomponents made from VICTREX PAEK polymers to continuously operate in, or be frequently sterilized by, steam. The initial increase in themechanical properties is due to increases in the degree of crystallinity.

Yarn and Thread GuidesThe fiber spinning process generates highfrictional heat and demanding wearconditions. The temperature resistance, mechanical strength and wear properties ofVICTREX PAEK polymers are up to thechallenge. The resulting long-lifeperformance in combination with one stepmanufacture enabled by the ability over-mold ceramic inlays results in a costeffective solution over metal and otherplastics. These properties have also helpeddrive VICTREX PAEK polymers as areplacement for metal in the moving threadguides of weaving machines. Because thecomponent moves in this application, theadditional benefit of weight savings and thecorresponding lower moment of inertiahelp to reduce energy requirements. This, combined with VICTREX PAEK polymers’low friction and high wear resistance, makeit a natural choice for this application.

Bearings and Bushings Reliability and low maintenance are criticalrequirements for machinery parts, particularly in the textile market. The goal:to achieve longer life and increasedmachine up-time. For bearing components, such as the bearing covers used inconveying systems in dyeing and dryingmachines, VICTREX PAEK polymers offerimproved reliability and longer life throughits great temperature resistance, chemicaldye resistance, steam resistance. Unlikemetal, this high performance material canbe injection molded enabling cost effective component manufacturing and increasingdesign flexibility.

Fuse Pressing BeltsThe production process to make textilesdemands the highest quality parts. Forexample, forming machine conveyor belts used in the production of shirt collarsare subject to the abrasive nature of thecloth being formed which can quickly wearout the belt. Now with the introduction ofVICOTE Coatings, these glass woven beltscan be coated for improved wear-resistanceand increase the life. VICOTE Coatings canpotentially increase the life by up to 40% —resulting in less downtime while the belts arebeing replaced.

Wear Plates Fabric waste due to contamination is aproblem that every textile manufacturerwould like to avoid. The use of VICTREXPAEK polymer-based wear plates as a part ofthe chain assemblies in the textile stretchingmachines eliminates the need for lubricationwhich minimizes the potential for oilcontamination of the textiles being run. Thehigh temperature performance, outstandingchemical and steam resistance and excellentwear performance of VICTREX PAEKpolymers promote long life which canreduce maintenance costs. VICTREX PAEKpolymers have proven to be an outstandingchoice for these critical applications.

Advantages of VICTREX PAEK Polymers and VICOTE Coatings vs. Competitive Materials

• Wide property range and can show better performance inaggressive processing environments, especially high temperatureand steam, resulting in longer component life.

• Weight reduction, lower moment of inertia, energy savings.

• Can be injection molded for greater design flexibility and canreduce the cost of manufacture.

Metal

• Tougher impact and wear resistance, better design flexibility.

• Can be lower cost to manufacture.Ceramics

• Significantly outperforms in terms of toughness, wear andabrasion resistance.

• Does not require the application of a primer for adhesion, eliminating a process step.

• Heavier weight delivers greater coverage per unit volume.
