Virtual Microscopy Lab Date: January 29, 2015 Lab Partners: Mariam Jiffar Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to learn the basics of a variety of microscopy techniques by viewing images from selected specimens. Procedure: 1. Go to http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/primer/virtual/virtual.html . 2. Sketch one specimen from at least three different microscopy techniques. Write the name of the technique and sketch what you observe in the field of view and write one distinguishing feature of the technique. Data/Observations: Figure 1. Virtual Scanning Electron Microscopy Here, we can observe a grasshopper’s head. Virtual scanning electron microscopy allows one to adjust the focus, contrast, and magnification of a specimen. Figure 2. Translational Microscopy This shows magnified silver crystals. Translational microscopy allows one to control and adjust brightness and zoom to fine-tune microscopic images. Figure 3. Magnification Module This is a magnified image of an Intel 286 microprocessor. This kind of module allows one to increase magnification according to changes in microscopic objective. Conclusion:

Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to learn the basics of a variety of microscopy techniques by viewing images from selected specimens.

Procedure:1. Go to http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/primer/virtual/virtual.html.2. Sketch one specimen from at least three different microscopy techniques. Write the name of the

technique and sketch what you observe in the field of view and write one distinguishing feature of the technique.

Data/Observations:

Figure 1. Virtual Scanning Electron MicroscopyHere, we can observe a grasshopper’s head. Virtual scanning electron microscopy allows one to adjust the focus, contrast, and magnification of a specimen.

Figure 2. Translational MicroscopyThis shows magnified silver crystals. Translational microscopy allows one to control and adjust brightness and zoom to fine-tune microscopic images.

Figure 3. Magnification ModuleThis is a magnified image of an Intel 286 microprocessor. This kind of module allows one to increase magnification according to changes in microscopic objective.

Conclusion:It is important to know a variety of microscopy techniques in order to choose the appropriate one.
