Home Weatherization Workshops to be held in Tuba City

Description: A free two-day home weatherization workshop is available to homeowners in the

Tuba City, AZ area on June 18 & 19, 2016. Two members of the class will have their homes

weatherized by the class. Every attendee completing the class receives a home weatherization

kit valued over $150. The workshop is sponsored by Arizona Public Service (APS) and presented

by Red Feather Development Group, a non-profit dedicated to safe and healthy housing on the

FLAGSTAFF, AZ, May 26, 2016 - When spring arrives, few of us are thinking about needing to

weatherize our homes. But in Northern Arizona spring is actually an optimal time for it because

weatherization will help keep homes cool in the hot summer months. And with the monsoon

rains right around the corner, it’s a good time to check for roof leaks too. Red Feather

Development Group, a non-profit organization in association with Arizona Public Service (APS)

is hosting a free Home Weatherization Workshop. Participants learn how to weatherize their

homes and improve the energy efficiency of their homes. The two day workshops are free and

every attendee will receive a weatherization kit (valued at $150.00) upon completing the class.

During the class, members work on two of the attendee’s homes. They assess the challenges,

plan the work, execute the work and measure the energy efficiency gained. Previous

participants have shared that not only is the class material interesting and working on one

another’s houses rewarding, but there are real cost savings for those that implement what they

learned. One past student remarked, “It was amazing what we got done and it made an

immediate 15% difference in our home’s energy efficiency!”

At a recent Shongopavi Weatherization workshop, one family had a 36% increase in energy

efficiency after completing the weatherization techniques of window sealing, door weather

stripping replacement, and covering drafty holes where pipes and fittings went to the outside.

That homeowner, Marjorie Joseph, shared, “We all had fun and what a difference a small effort

can make!”

Weatherization is the process of identifying and sealing air leaks, and adding insulation to

reduce a home’s energy use. The result is reduced utility bills and less energy consumption

which means less air pollution both in and outside the home. Special attention is given to how

to make the home healthier in the process of sealing it up tighter. The two weatherization

measures that generate the most energy savings are sealing leaks and adding insulation. These

measures are largely invisible and much of the work can be completed by any homeowner.

Weatherization Quick Facts:

The average older, un-weatherized home leaks air at a rate equal to a four-foot square

hole in the wall.

Low income households spend nearly 14% of their total annual income on energy costs.

The average household can save $350 or more per year on energy after it is

weatherized.

Simple, do-it-yourself weatherization repairs typically have the most benefit with the

least effort and expense.

Participants get the simplest to the most complex questions answered

in a safe environment. No prior construction experience is necessary to

join the class. Everyone can learn weatherization techniques that save

money and increase comfort and home safety.

All ages are encouraged to attend to learn caulking techniques so

homes stay cool in the summer months. The workshop members

identify opportunities at community homes where they can practice

what they have learned and make an immediate difference for the

safety and healthiness of a Native American home.

Basic safety tools like carbon monoxide detectors are explained and
