much we care and how much we can accomplish. Thanks for all the work you have done and for all the hard work coming up. Larry Zitzow

Thanks to everyone who made the 2010 Awards Day such a success. It was wonderful to see some of our retired employees again. It brings me great pleasure to congratulate our award winners again. We have many dedicated and talented employees.

There aren’t enough awards in a year to proper-ly acknowledge. We can look forward to many interesting projects this spring. It should be very busy. This is a good opportunity to really let the campus know how

President and Mrs. Kelley hosted a Christmas luncheon for Facilities’ employees on December 16 in the Facilities lunchroom. The Kelleys dined with staff members as everyone celebrated the holiday season.

Christmas Lunch With the Kelleys

Valentine’s Day

Facts

15% of U.S. women send themselves flowers on Valentine's Day. About 1 billion Valen-tine's Day cards are ex-changed each year. That's the largest season-al card-sending occasion of the year, next to Christmas. Alexander Graham Bell applied for his patent on the telephone, an "Improvement in Teleg-raphy", on Valentine's Day, 1876. Hallmark has over 1330 different cards specifi-cally for Valentine's Day. In Wales, wooden love spoons were carved and given as gifts on Febru-ary 14th. Hearts, keys and keyholes were fa-vorite decorations on the spoons. The decoration meant, "You unlock my heart!" Some people used to believe that if a woman saw a robin flying over-head on Valentine's Day, it meant she would mar-ry a sailor. If she saw a sparrow, she would mar-ry a poor man and be very happy. If she saw a goldfinch, she would marry a millionaire.

UND will be eliminating the email systems, Groupwise and UMail and replacing them with Microsoft Business Productivity Online Standard Suite (BPOS). The switch-over is al-ready in progress. The schedule for change-over is as follows: 1. Laura Thoreson and staff (completed) 2. Paul Clark and staff

(completed) 3. Larry Zitzow and staff 4. Mark Johnson and staff The system works much the same as the other email systems. You will notice some changes in the appearance and func-tions. After all staff have been converted, training will be conduct-ed. We will let you know those dates soon.

There is also training at your own pace. Atomic Learning provides online training solutions with easy to use tutorials. Please let your supervi-sor know what questions or concerns you have. Training can then be customized to meet your needs. For questions regarding this conversion, call Josh Rahn at 777-6809.

Snow Removal Safety Use caution when you see snow removal equipment working in an area. The operators may not be able to see you when you try to maneuver around their equipment. Give them

space and your patience. It is never a good idea to pass a snow plow on the road. You may not be able to see what’s in front of it before it’s too late. It would be helpful if

service vehicles did not enter the yard while the lot is being cleared. It makes it so much easier to have the lot com-pletely empty. Thanks for your consideration of these ideas.

HRMS Information Change On February 12, 2011, your Employee Self‐Service User ID (firs ni al+lastname) and Password will be disabled and replaced by the NDUS User ID (firstname.lastname) and password. UND is moving toward using the NDUS User ID as a single sign‐on for all computer ac‐cess. The NDUS User ID will now be your access to Employee Self‐Service, HRMS, Campus Connec‐

on and Financials ac‐

counts. You should start using your NDUS User ID im-mediately. If you: • Have not activated or

“claimed” your NDUS User Id,

• Do not remember if you have activated your NDUS User ID, OR

• Do not remember your NDUS password,

Go to: http://claim.ndus. edu. If you have any ques-tions, please contact the UND Help Desk at 7-2222 or the NDUS Help Desk at

1-866-457-6387 or help.desk@noda k.edu. Once you’ve claimed your NDUS User ID and start to use it on a regular basis, stop using your old Em-ployee Self-Service user ID. Any security or setup changes will not transfer between the two user ID’s. Remember that your old User ID will not work after February 12, so start using your NDUS User ID as soon as possible, to avoid any interruption to your Employee Self-Service access.

Facilities October U-Shine Winner Staff Senate presented Stephen Mur-phy, BST, with the October U-Shine Award. Stephen was nominated for being an excellent team player and his nomination read: ‘We had a heavy sliding door at Hyslop fall last night. They were cleaning up a roof leak in another part of the building when the door fell, they protected the building that was not secure at this time while we ran around getting the material and tools necessary to secure the building, they also assisted us in any-thing we needed to get the job done.

This is not the first time that Steve assisted us in an emergency one night when we had a heavy rain flooding the ground floor of Educa-tion he was there cleaning the mess inside and each time we came with a truckload of sandbags he came out-side in the heavy rain to assist in placing the sandbags, Just another example of how he and his crew have gone above and beyond their duties. Stephen was presented with a check in the amount of $50.

2011 Facilities Management Awards Day The 2011 Facilities Management Awards Day was held January 26 at the Chester Fritz Auditorium. Director Larry Zitzow opened the program, speak-ing about the progress made within the past year and also dedicating the program to Loran Carl, whose family members were in attendance. Door prizes were given away, treats and coffee were enjoyed and a slideshow of events from the previous year was shown. It was a day to gather and take pride in the hard work the staff of Facilities Management continue to do each and every day of the year.

Recyclemania For the third year in a row, UND will join hun-dreds of other colleges and universities com-peting in Recy-cleMania, a friendly competition to help re-duce waste. Over a ten week period from January 23 thru April 2, campuses across the country will compete in different contests to see which institution can collect the largest amount of recyclables,

the least amount of trash per capita, or have the highest recy-cling rate.

The main goal of this event is to increase student awareness of campus recycling and waste minimization. No schools “lose” – all participants win through their efforts and achievements in waste reduction and recycling. The ARH Recycling Committee hosted a

Talkin’ Trash With Deb Deb Merrill Recyclemania kickoff 10:30 pm on Friday, Jan-uary 28th at the Memorial Union Loading Dock. The event included mu-sic, games, prizes, food and beverages. Reduce your Waste When a ton of paper is recycled: 17 trees are saved 4 cubic yds – about the size of two desks - are kept from the landfill 75 % less air pollutants & 35 % less water pollu-tants are produced 60 % less water is used

4100 KWH of electricity are saved – enough to power the average home for 6 months! Please join our recycling efforts. It’s easy! UND recycled 158 tons of office paper in 2010. Look for recycling containers in your building. Your recy-cling helps the University operate more efficiently. St. Patrick’s Day is observed on March 17 because that is the feast day of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. It is believed that he died on March 17 in the year 461 AD. It is also a worldwide celebration of Irish culture and his-tory. St. Patrick’s Day is a national holiday in Ireland, and a provincial holiday in the Canadian province of New-foundland and Labrador. In Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day, people traditionally wear a small bunch of shamrocks on their jackets or caps. Chil-dren wear orange, white and green badges, and women and girls wear green ribbons in their hair. 34 million Americans have Irish ancestry, according to the 2003 US Census. That’s almost nine times the popula-tion of Ireland, which has 4.1 million people. The harp is the symbol of Ireland. The color green is also commonly associated with Ireland, also known as “the Emerald Isle.” The Irish flag is green, white and orange. The green symbolizes the people of the south, and orange, the people of the north. White represents the peace that brings them together as a nation. Legend says that each leaf of the clover means something: the first for hope, the second for faith, the third for love. and the fourth for luck.
