Apr. 9-20 Late registration accepted with add code or instructor’s signature. Apr. 20 Last day to drop a class and still qualify for a refund. Apr. 27 Last day to drop a class without a grade. May. 1 Deadline to submit petition for Spring Quarter graduation and have your name featured in the commencement program. Schedule 30-minute consultation with counselor.. May. 4 Last day to file pass/no pass card. May. 28 Memorial Day holiday observance. College closed; classes do not meet. Weekend classes do not meet. STRONGLY RECOMMENDED: concurrent enrollment in Mus 12 A Course Outline Music 3C is a study of harmonic practice and musical form. Materials studied in this course will include advanced notation practices, scales, intervals, triads, non-harmonic tones, basic part-writing practices, harmonic progression and musical form, and their use in compositions. Expected Outcomes The student will be able to: a) notate major and minor scales. b) identify diatonic intervals within the octave c) identify and notate basic triads d) identify seventh chords e) analyze and apply the rules of voice leading as used in the music of the common practice period f) analyze popular and jazz songs with regard to their harmonic progression. g) play basic triad positions and provide simple harmonizations of melodies h) write simple compositions demonstrating these composition techniques. Produce a musical composition applying the principles of basic four-part harmony using standard harmonic and melodic techniques. Student Learning Outcome #2 - Analyze compositions identifying harmonic progressions and cadences using Roman numerals, figured bass, and popular chord symbols. Expanded description of Course content a) basic principles of music theory, literature and composition. b) direct observation of student work at the blackboard. c) outside written assignments. d) practice and drill in sight singing and ear training. Methods of Evaluating Outcomes 1. written quizzes on analysis of harmonic and melodic phrases. 2. aural tests on intervals and triads. 3. comprehensive midterm and final examinations on material. 4. Written musical composition. Text: Benward, Bruce., Music in Theory and Practice, 8th. ed., vol. I Minimum student materials: required text, music manuscript notebook paper, pencils, (Please don’t use ink when doing in-class exercises!) POLICIES 1. Attendance: you will be allowed no more than 5 absences for the quarter in this course. There will be ABSOLUTELY NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS RULE. Once you have more than 5 absences I will start to dock your grade. Attendance will be taken every day and each tardy will subtract from your grade. 2. Grading procedures Quizzes---------------200 points (5 quizzes - 40 points each) Composition---------200 points Midterm-------------- 150 points Lab ------------------- 300 points Final Exam-----------150 points TOTAL----------------1000 points Grade distribution: A= 1000-900 points B= 899-800 points C= 799--700 points D= 699-600 points F= 600 and below
