Cheriton Light Festival By Hannah O’Donnell

Look to your February calendars ladies and gentlemen, because Strange Cargo are looking to light up the 23rd and 24th by delivering a weekend long Light Festival in Cheriton!

With the help of local people, Strange Cargo strive to ‘reclaim the streets’ by hosting a series of installations on the Saturday night (4pm – 9pm) and a light parade on the Sunday (5:30pm – 7:30pm). Local traders will also remain open and residents in Cheriton have also been asked to take part in a piece; but rather than spoil the surprise I’m just going to urge you to take a trip to Cheriton High Street and see for yourself.

With fifteen years’ experience behind them, Strange Cargo is excited about this Cheriton Light Festival as the first of an event they wish to do annually. A special event perfect for the whole family and something so far unseen in this locality, there are to be large and small scale artworks; including a beautiful light projection from international artist Ross Ashton onto All Souls Church, a giant automaton Firefly

created by Andrew Baldwin, as well as an animation from Greg Stobbs on the Saturday, followed by the light parade and bonfire on the Sunday. Everyone is invited to come along for this wonderful (and free) event along a completely pedestrianized high street. And from someone who has been involved with a Strange Cargo event before, I’m recommend you attend.

Strange Cargo own a factory building in Cheriton which they use as a workshop and gallery, as well as offices above the Georges House Gallery at the top of the Old High street, in Folkestone, which they run to support local artists. But with the help of the Arts Council Funding in 2010, they were able to kick start a project called Cheriton Artland, ‘creating a greater cultural offering to the residents’ and will continue to do so with the help of the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. The Cheriton Light Festival is the perfect opportunity for people to get their own slice culture, getting involved and supporting their local community.

Strange Cargo also works with local schools for many of their events, which is how I was

able to take part ten years ago. We were taught how to make paper lanterns of our own; and my class made fish lanterns before walking to the beach to watch a projection and bonfire. It was a long time ago, so the memories are more feelings than direct memories; the feelings of accomplishing something with a team, fun and community.

True to their roots as a garrison town, Strange Cargo have partnered with Step Short, a WWI programme, in creating an emotive piece of art involving a visitors book from The Harbour Canteen for the Cheriton Light festival. The Canteen served refreshments to soldiers on their way to France to fight, and along with the artists previously stated, and smaller scale projects; this moving piece is another reason the Cheriton Light Festival is something you can’t miss.

Gone are the days of mediocre and mundane kitchens. Light and art are kicking down your kitchen doors and making themselves at home with the help of Johnny Cotter and his gallery. But if you think this art is just for hanging on the wall you are mistaken. The Johnny Cotter Gallery have brought out splash backs to be made to your requests. They range in price depending on size; and are splash, grease and water proof and can be cleaned as per a normal splash back. But what makes these splash backs so unique is each one is different, so that no two customers will have the same. Made to order, each one either takes inspiration from a piece of Johnny’s existing art or he creates something totally new for you after a short consultation to get a feel for what it is the client likes. Then several mock ups are made for approval before going into production.

And should you visit the gallery and choose a piece of existing art and fall in love with it, as you undoubtedly would, and then ask for it to be transferred into a splash back, even then Johnny promises to change it slightly so that yours is still a unique splash back.

‘I will always endeavour to do this, as the fact that yours has been made especially for you means it’s far more personal,’ says Johnny Cotter.

However with the interest that is pouring in, Johnny understands the challenge he’s created for himself. It takes a week longer than his other pieces as it has to go through a different process before the foil backing is put on to protect the image.

But each one is well worth the wait and a perfect way to bring colour into your kitchen.

Medical Herbalism Demystified

If I wasn’t a Medical Herbalist I’d be really confused about the difference between a Medical Herbalist and someone who knows lots about herbs. Many people know about the healing properties of herbs and how to use them for simple, self limiting complaints. Some GPs, pharmacists, health food shop assistants, gardeners, amateur experts, avid readers and those who have undertaken short term study all might have a sound understanding of herbs and their individual actions in the body. Most people with a knowledge of herbs can tell you that Echinacea is good for helping the immune system deal with colds, that Elderflowers are anti-catarrhal and therefore help with hayfever and the sniffles, and that Garlic has a reputation for helping just about everything! It’s pretty common knowledge among many that Sage is used to rub on stings, that thyme tea might help coughs and chamomile is calming and restoring to the digestive system.

I myself hold workshops to make sure we all know what herbs to pick from the wild,

our gardens and the kitchen to use for simple, self limiting complaints. Amongst other things, we make ointments together, comfrey and marigold for healing, and we learn how to knock up rosehip syrup to make sure you get lots of vitamin C throughout the winter months.

So; why the need for a Medical Herbalist?

Well, I’m all for people using ‘herbal first aid’ and trying infusions and single tinctures to see if that might help. In fact, if I think that’s all that’s necessary I’m likely to suggest you try it before booking an appointment. However, herbal medicine really comes into its own for more complex, long standing and difficult conditions.

What makes a qualified Medical Herbalist different then?

We study for 4 years, and have a Batchelor of Science degree. It is compulsory to undertake 150 hours supervised clinical training and be able to assess the patient medically as well as holistically. A medical herbalist is permitted by law to ‘diagnose’ in the same way as a GP (reflecting our level of training). It’s unlikely many of us do though, as our

approach to treatment is very different, and the diagnosis is not always central to us, what’s more important is how the person came to develop the illness in the first place.

Nonetheless, it’s vital to have the medical knowledge, as primary health care professionals we need to be able to spot any danger signs of serious undiagnosed conditions and refer on where necessary.

Do you have powers that the ordinary person doesn’t have? Can you see into the future? Can you guarantee that you will always be fit and healthy? If you can say ‘yes’ to these questions then you probably don’t need a Lasting Power of Attorney. However, to date I have never met anyone who is able to give a positive ‘yes’ to them.

So what happens if things do go wrong? Who can take care of your affairs; make decisions on your behalf if you are no longer able to due to an accident or illness? Most people would think that their husband/wife or children would be able to take charge, WRONG! The answer is no one can unless there is a Lasting Power of Attorney in place. Without one your family or friends will have to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed your ‘deputy’, which is expensive, restrictive, intrusive and a very long process. The person who is appointed may not be the person you would have chosen and if there is an argument over who should be appointed, you will end up paying all of the legal costs as the person who is being fought over! Most people are not

aware that if one of the signatories of a joint bank account loses their mental capacity, the account can be frozen which can pose a major problem if that account is used to pay bills. The delay in getting the Court of Protection to unfreeze the account could be six months and that can be disastrous if it means a mortgage is unpaid.

According to the Alzheimer’s Society, by 2025, more than 1 million people in the UK will have dementia. One in five people over 85 already suffers from it, with rates significantly higher among women. However, a Lasting Power of Attorney is not just for the elderly. Mental and physical incapacity can hit anyone at at any time.

How to choose fabrics

Before buying, ask to borrow a swatch or length of fabric so you can see how the fabric looks in situ, at different times of the day and night. Ask these questions before you start:

•Width? The wider the fabric, the better the value, and the less sewing will be required. 140cm is average.

•Weight? Heavier fabrics are usually too bulky for small projects, while lighter fabrics usually wear more quickly.

•Durability? Fabric is divided into categories depending on whether it will be subjected to light, general or heavy domestic use.

•Washable? And, if so, has it been pre-shrunk?

•If it’s patterned, what size is the repeat? Large patterns require more fabric so that you can match the repeats.

Types of fabric

Fabrics are composed of natural or synthetic fibres, or blends of them, and made using a wide variety of weaves.

FIBRES

•Cotton can range from lightweight muslin to heavy canvas and is the most commonly used fabric for home furnishings.

•Linen has a lovely drape and lustre, is durable, but has a tendency to crease.

•Nylon, or polyamide, is tough and resists abrasion, but tends to produce static electricity.

•Polyester is a very strong synthetic fibre that mixes well with other fibres to produce versatile fabrics.

•Silk comes in intense colours and has an attractive, lustrous surface.

•Viscose is made from wood pulp. It is hard-wearing and durable.

•Wool is breathable, warm, naturally water-resistant and available in a wide range of thicknesses and textures.

WEAVES

•Bouclé has a looped pile.•Corduroy features pile in stripes

that may be narrow or wide.•Damasks contrast matt and

shiny areas of pattern and are usually rather traditional in style.

•Jacquards feature a complex, raised pattern.

•Moiré is a water-mark pattern, often found on silks.

•Plain weaves have a smooth surface.

•Satin is heavy with a lustrous surface, usually made from silk or polyester.

•Twill weave produces diagonal or zig-zag lines on the surface.

•Velvet may be made from a variety of fibres and features a luxurious, soft pile.

What to use whereUPHOLSTERY

•Hard-wearing, tightly woven fabrics are best for most upholstery. Medium-to heavy-weight cottons and cotton mixes, linen mixes and wools are all good, conventional choices, while corduroy,

denim and low-pile velvet are interesting as well as usable.

•Avoid deep piles, which may become crushed, and loose or loopy weaves, which are likely to snag.

•Bold motifs should usually be centred on sofa or chair backs. You will need to buy more fabric to ensure everything fits in the right place.

LOOSE COVERS

•Choose a fabric that is washable and substantial enough to hold its shape yet soft enough to be comfortable: medium-weight cottons, linens or blends, or light wools are all ideal.

CURTAINS

•Curtains can be made of practically any fabric, from cotton and linen to velvet, silk or wool.

•Consider unusual fabrics such as blankets, tweed, fleece, or perhaps a sari or chintz quilt.

•Very thick, heavy fabrics will be too bulky for small window openings.

•Sheer fabrics will not hold a crisp fold and will allow light through.

CUSHIONS

•Choose almost any fabric, within reason.

•Try using remnants from fabric used elsewhere in the room

•Light to medium weight cottons, linens and cotton or linen blends are best.

•Loose, textured and pile weaves are impractical for these purposes.

•Choose fabrics that will withstand frequent washing

•For outdoor and children’s dining, oilcloth is ideal.

‘There’s nothing more fun than rocking out’

The Stranglers are Jet Black (drums), JJ Burnel (bass and lead vocals), Dave Greenfield (keyboards) and Baz Warne (guitar and lead vocals).

The Stranglers will be performing at Folkestone Leas Cliff Hall on Thursday 21st March. We were delighted to interview them.

Here we hear from Hannah O’Donnell as she chats to JJ Burnel:

There are very few things more inspiring than hearing a good artist talk about their passion; and I got to do just that when I interviewed the 70’s Rock Legend Jean-Jacques Burnel of The Stranglers. Cross between a dab-hand at being a rock star, and a man humbled by the response his music gets, JJ Burnel and I discussed The Stranglers past and present,

as well as JJ’s personal preferences and inspirations.

H: Do you think your music has changed with the times or do you play what you enjoy, keeping it the same?

JJ: I think we’ve tried to be as honest as people can be, and I suspect it reflects us as people, how as we’ve gotten older and learned things, it has evolved. Of course, I’d hate to think we were mutton dressed as lamb, but I think if any artist is honest then their output should reflect them as they are and the world that we live in.

H: Do you think you have had the same success outside of London or would you have found a way to rock out anyway?

JJ: Well there’s nothing more fun than rocking out. It makes you tap your feet and want to shake your head; melodies

bewitch you (hopefully). So with rhythm, melody and a bit of intelligence with lyrics, you encapsulate (hopefully) what you are trying to say. People will pick up on that.

H: Because your most recent album ‘Giants’ came out last year, did you get the response from that you were hoping for?

JJ: We did you know. We’re no longer spring chickens and it was received in many countries as a breath of fresh air, which is surprising really as it is our 17th album; mind you it took us a few years to get it together. But all over the world it was the best received album we’ve ever done. In terms of critical acclaim, it was the best received, so it was almost like it was our first album or something rather than our seventeenth which was very cool.

H: If it felt like your first album, did it feel like your first gig when you performed it? Did you get the same butterflies?

JJ: No, not as bad as the old days, because obviously I’ve got experience now. I do get some butterflies; I think it gives you an edge. In our first gigs we were kind of fighting for our lives, people wanted us off the stage and we got up people’s noses. But now people come and see us because they want to come and see us, so it’s very different now.

H: That must be a phenomenal feeling, knowing that people have come to see you because they knew you and they grew up with your music?

JJ: Well yeah of course! And as for the younger people who haven’t grown up with us but are discovering us is very cool. To see teenagers who are very knowledgeable on our previous stuff, which a lot of it came out before they were born, so I mean how cool is that?

H: What sort of music do you listen to?

JJ: I listen to all kinds, but I don’t know where a lot of the new music is coming out from. I’m very fortunate, I’ve got a daughter who is very cool and she teaches me and shows me new stuff and tries to amaze me, though sometimes I’m not easily amazed but it’s great, at least I have access to stuff that keeps me out of my comfort zone.

H: I think music is very important, and listening to different music is important as well.

JJ: Of course, if you commit yourself to one tribe or kind of music, I don’t think you’re going to get much out of life. It’s like you’ve got blinkers on already and with blinkers people don’t learn and don’t enjoy life so much. And sometimes new music gives me ideas which is good; I’ll take ideas from anywhere. If you lived in a vacuum, you’d dry up.

H: So you’ve just got back from Australia on tour haven’t you?

JJ: Yeah, we were in Australia a month ago and New Zealand but it wasn’t so hot then. (It was

still hot but there were fires when we went to Tasmania there were fires there already. Because you know at the moment they’re undergoing real terrible fires. Devastation and people losing their houses), but yeah, we were there for three weeks, doing some quite big gigs, it was lovely. It was lovely to go from gloomy Britain to sunny OZ.

H: Was it a different kind of gig, the Aussie gig compared to Britain?

JJ: Well, in a way because they were seated for a start. You had three thousand people seated so it was a challenge for us to get them of their bums and rocking which was great and in the process we had to be rude to them, which they enjoyed so we didn’t end up pulling any punches so that was quite fun.

H: Were they big gigs?

JJ: Most of the time they were between 1,500 and 4,000 people. So not bad.

H: Do you prefer gigs that size?

JJ: It depends on the layout of a venue to be honest, because if you can see people you make contact with them. If it’s too big they just look like ants so if you play at Glastonbury in front of 80,000 people you can’t really fix on any one person. Except that one girl in front flashing. The Stranglers grew up in pubs and clubs, so I like the sweatiness of it, but there is a vibe when you play to lots of people. Because if you all connect at the right time, you give them your energy and they give you their energy back. But that’s if everything just clicks.


H: So do you have a favourite gig you’ve played?

JJ: Not really. No, there’s quite a few venues, if you’re just talking about the UK that create a vibe. The Roundhouse in London has always been one of my favourite gigs. It’s not the size that counts it’s the layout. And it’s the people as well. Are they up for a good time? Or have they just come in from the cold?

H: So does all this touring leave you with a lot of spare time?

JJ: Last year was the busiest over the last thirty years for The Stranglers, because there was a lot of demand all over the world for us. But I do like to have a bit of time to myself because, you’ve got a life and you need to learn what you do in life you will put back into your music. And if you’re continually touring and living out of suitcases and hotels, you end up writing about life on the road and your hotel room which isn’t really inspiring. So there is a time to play and a time to reflect.

H: Do you find it difficult to separate that time? Or does touring take too great an affect?

JJ: Well I think for a lot of people in my position, it’s caused needless pain. It’s affected my relationships in the past; if you’re away all the time it’s going to put a strain on the relationship and it’s not just people who are touring. I suspect people who are in the armed forces if they’re away on duty for six months that’s an awful lot of strain on the person left behind. And then there are temptations that come in the way and that puts extra strain on the relationships. So yeah touring can be destructive.

H: But in a fun way?

JJ: oh yeah of course! It can be tiring sure, but hard? There’s much harder stuff in the world than having the privilege of being paid to play music. How good does it get? So people who complain about it, I don’t have much time for them. They got what they wanted and then complain about it.

H: So what do you think your 2013 will bring?

JJ: Well last year was a big one for The Stranglers worldwide, so this year I’d like to just keep doing what we’re doing. We’ve got the ‘Feel it Live’ gig over March, (which includes the gig at the Leas) and see what happens from there.

If I went away with anything from this interview, other than pride at my first interview being with such a rock legend, it’s a greater love for The Stranglers, and JJ Burnel. With his tangents about Tasmania’s fires and the armed forces, I don’t see an artist lost in his own little world of rock, but a band that enjoy making good music that reflects their personality and perspective and shall continue to do so.

February is the time of year to think about perfect potatoes and smashing spuds. Home grown potatoes are an incredibly good value crop and you’ll soon find that the so-called humble spud is actually a very tasty and extremely versatile vegetable.

If you don’t have much space, use a 45cm (18in) diameter pot with a single tuber. Make sure the container is well supplied with drainage holes, fill it two thirds full of compost, pop a tuber in the centre and add a further couple of inches of compost. As foliage appears, add more compost to cover it over and repeat until no more can be added, then keep the container well watered.

Most potatoes produce a slightly earlier and somewhat heavier crop if the seed potatoes are allowed to produce small but sturdy sprouts before planting. Stand the tubers widest end uppermost in a seed tray or old egg carton

and place these in a cool but frost free spot with plenty of natural light. After a few weeks the sprouts will be about 1cm tall, perfect for planting.

What to Grow:

•Steamed potatoes are delicious, especially if cooked the day you lift them. Try Vanessa, Dunluce, Edzell Blue and Lady Christl for some of the tastiest steamers.

•New potatoes dripping in chives and butter are wonderful. Try Lady Christl, Charlotte, Juliette, Casa Blanca, Nadine and Nicola.

•If you adore mashed potato then try Dunluce, Valour, Maris Bard, Lady Balfour and King Edward.

•If you love your potatoes in their jackets, then try Cara, Lady Balfour, Picasso, Kestrel, King Edward, Desiree and Valor.

•For great roast potatoes try Kestrel, Maris Piper,

Desiree, Lady Balfour, Vivaldi and Edzel Blue.

•For the best chips, use Kestrel, King Edward, Maris Peer, Accord, Rooster and Edzel Blue.

Potatoes are divided into ‘earlies’ (first to be harvested) and ‘main crop’, generally larger tubers, harvested later. Try ‘earlies’ if your soil hasn’t been cultivated for several years. ‘Earlies’ are in the ground for less time than main crops and are less likely to suffer from wire-worm attack. ‘Earlies’ are also useful in smaller gardens as they takes less space and are in the ground for a shorter period, giving you the opportunity to grow another fast-maturing crop after the potatoes have been lifted.

No crop is without its share of problems and the fungus responsible for potato blight is sometimes hard to beat, especially in warm, damp years. Generally, ‘earlies’ suffer less with blight and you can select varieties which show resistance to the infection such as Valor, Lady Balfour, Coleen and especially Sarpo Mira and Sarpo Axona.

Slugs are also a real menace, tunnelling into the tubers’ flesh and sometimes even hollowing them out completely. The biological control nematode Nemaslug works under the soil surface, has a brilliant effect and poses no threat to wildlife.
