1 - Welcome to ESE/IPP
We are delighted that you took interest in the study opportunities offered by the School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto (ESE/IPP). We are proud of our institution with its highly motivated students and staff and excellent infra-structures. We are committed to the international cooperation in the field of education and expanding and consolidating our relationships with higher education institutions in Europe and beyond. This brochure is intended to inform students from abroad about studies at ESE/IPP and student life in Porto. You might not find answers to all your questions here, so please do not hesitate to contact our International Relations Office. We wish you an enjoyable and memorable experience in Porto and all the best in your studies at our school.
2 – Portugal
Portugal is located in the south-west corner of Europe and includes the Madeira and Azores archipelagos in the Atlantic Ocean. So, Portugal’s Territorial Organization is formed by three territorial areas: the Archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira (autonomous regions) and the mainland (which has 18 districts). Mainland Portugal, located on the Iberian Peninsula in the south-western corner of Europe, occupies an area of 88,889 km2. It has 832 km of Atlantic coast and a 1,215 km border with Spain. CLIMATE In spite of Portugal’s small territory, its climate varies significantly from one region to another since it is influenced by the relief, latitude and proximity to the sea. Even so, it generally offers mild winters, when compared to the rest of Europe and hot and dry summers, particularly in the inland areas. Because of the sea’s influence, temperatures are slightly lower in the coastal areas. In spite of the mild temperatures, in the North region, particularly inland, it gets cold and there is some snowfall (mainly in Serra da Estrela Mountains, the highest point in Portugal). There are often warm and sunny days in autumn, especially in November – the so called "St. Martin’s summer" as this saint’s day is on 11 November.
2 – Portugal
LANGUAGE Of Latin origin, Portuguese is the fifth most widely spoken language in the world and is the mother tongue of about 200 million people. It is also the official language in: Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe (in Africa), Brazil (in South America) and East Timor (in Asia). RELIGION The majority of Portuguese are Catholic. However the Portuguese Constitution guarantees religious freedom, which results in the presence of different religions in Portugal: Christians (Protestants of various denominations and Orthodox), Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Jews. Fátima is one of the greatest Catholic sanctuaries of the world. 3 – Porto
Porto is
Portugal's second city and capital of the North region. The city is located in the estuary of the Douro River in northern Portugal. The largest city in the region, Porto is considered the economic and cultural heart of the entire region. The city, which has an estimated population of about 220,000, lies at the centre of the political Greater Metropolitan Area of Porto, with a population of slightly more than 1.7 million. The historic centre of Porto was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. One of Portugal's most internationally famous products, Port wine, is named after the city because it is produced along the Douro Valley. The country was also named after the Latin name of Porto, “Portus Cale”.
Porto district is one of the most industrialised districts in Portugal.

Sloping steeply down towards the river with its remarkable
bridges – one of them designed by Gustavo Eiffel – it has been an inspiration to a variety of artists. It has been visited over the years by many eminent people – making it one of the oldest tourism destinations in Europe. Many areas in Porto, well planned and landscaped, have been dedicated to leisure. Gardens, waterside esplanades, sophisticated and attractive shopping areas and excellent sports facilities are just some of the amenities available to enjoy yourselves during free time.

4 – The School of Education of Porto
The School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto, Portugal (ESE/IPP) articulating the dimensions of education, research and service to the Community, offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including 12 master degrees, and also post-graduation and specialization programmes mainly in teacher education but also in other convergent areas such as social education and heritage and cultural management for over 1500 students. ESE/IPP has been an active participant in UE programs since 1986 and is involved in all aspects of teacher education, having long established links with schools and HE institutions both regionally and internationally.

The International Relations Office is a service directly dependent on the Institutional Coordinator, the Polytechnic Institute of Porto. Our mission is the internationalization of ESE/IPP and its community. As follows, GRI develops its course of action at the level of the following Programmes: Lifelong Learning Programme, including Erasmus and Leonardo da Vinci and Cooperation with Brazil. It also cooperates in international projects coordination in the scope of international Programmes such as Comenius, Erasmus Intensive Programme, Grundtvig, among others. In 2008/2009 academic year, GRI begins to coordinate the national mobility programme “Vasco da Gama”, that allows the exchange of students between Polytechnics of Portugal. Application deadlines: Winter Semester: June 1st Spring Semester: November 15th Do not forget to bring the European Health Insurance Card. The moment you choose to come to ESE/IPP As soon as you decide to come to ESE/IPP in Erasmus, please contact the International Relations Office (GRI). We will assist you in the organization and fulfilment of all necessary documentation. All the relevant information (dates, subjects, credits) will be provided. Before departure, please inform us about precise date and hour of arrival in Porto. Should you arrive during the weekend or after office hours (17:00), please make the necessary arrangements concerning accommodation and inform us beforehand.

What to do upon arrival Please contact the GRI of ESE/IPP by email: [email protected] or [email protected] or by telephone: +351225073474. You should get the “Confirmation of Arrival” (whenever it’s required). A meeting with your tutor will be scheduled. What to do before getting back Before getting back home, you should contact the International Relations Office and ask for the Transcript of Records and also, if necessary, for the Confirmation of Erasmus Mobility. The ECTS The “European Credits Transfer System” is based on the total amount of work a student has to produce. Work produced during one year amounts to 60 ECTS. Having that as rule, one semester amounts to 30 ECTS. The use of this system makes transfers from foreign institutions easier. Language Courses At ESE/IPP, courses are given in both languages (Portuguese and English). That’s why ESE/IPP advices to its Erasmus students to attend an EILC Portuguese Language Course. How to get to Porto, Portugal By plane The most important international airports are at Lisbon, Porto and Faro. TAP Air Portugal is the national airline and it has multiple daily flights to Lisbon from Porto and Faro, and carriers operating scheduled international services. By car You can cross the Portugal-Spain border through several places from the north to south (Valença do Minho (E01/A3), Chaves (N532), Bragança (E82/IP4), Guarda/Vilar Formoso (E80/IP5), Elvas (E90/A6/IP7), Serpa (N260) and Vila Real de Santo António (E1/IP1)). There are no longer any border controls. By train Daily international trains run between Paris-Lisbon (Sud Express), crossing the frontier at Vilar Formoso; between Lisbon- Madrid, crossing the frontier at Marvão; and between Porto-Vigo, crossing the frontier at Valença. There are two standard long-distance rail journeys into Portugal. Both take the TGV. How to get to ESE/IPP The Metro (urban train) Station closest to ESE/IPP is Hospital de S. João Station. From there you can walk to ESE/IPP. The Trindade Station has connection with the rest of the urban train network From the city centre Bus: 300 or 305. The fastest way is by Metro (urban train): Line D (Hospital S. João).
6 – Useful Information
From the airport Line E (Violet) connects the Airport Station to the Estádio do Dragão Station. The Airport Station is located right in front of the Arrivals of the International Francisco Sá-Carneiro Airport. Nevertheless, pedestrian access is guaranteed by an underground passage extending from the inside of the Airport to the Station itself, which is simple and practical to find with the help of clearly visible signs. Connection Airport-City centre If you want to go from the Airport Station to the Bolhão Station get on at Line E. Connection Airport-ESE If you’re in the city centre, get on at Line D at the Trindade Station. If you’re in the Estádio do Dragão Station (Campanhã) get on one of the 4 Lines and a change in Trindade Station is required. In Trindade Station, change to line D (Yellow) and take the direction of Hospital de S. João. More Information at: Metro of Porto (www.metrodoporto.pt) and STCP (www.stcp.pt).
