FMU 2014 Volleyball Outlook

The Francis Marion University volleyball team will take the first serves of its 2014 campaign by hosting theannual FMU Invitational Tournament, Friday and Saturday (Sept. 5-6) in the Smith University Center. The six-team event will feature play on Friday between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. and on Saturday between 9 a.m.and 9 p.m. Admission is free. On Friday, Francis Marion will play the University of Mount Olive at 4 p.m. andShorter University at 8 p.m. The Patriots will then play a pair of matches on Saturday afternoon: ErskineCollege at 1 p.m. and Mars Hill University at 5 p.m.

FMU head coach Paul MacDonald, last season’s Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year, welcomes backseven letterwinners, including two starters, from last year’s 21-9 squad that placed third during the Peach Beltregular season. The 20-win season was the first for Francis Marion since 2008 and the squad’s 12-6 confer-ence record represented a six-win improvement over the 2012 campaign and the team’s highest PBC win totalsince 1998.

Returning starters include 5-9 junior hitter Alexzandra Reed and 5-10 senior middleblocker and right-side hitterShelby Jones. Last season, Reed ranked 215th nationally in kills per set (2.89) and 219th in points per set(3.36), while Jones ranked 276th in blocks per set at 0.76. Also returning are 6-0 senior setter Sloane Shank,5-4 junior libero and defensive specialist Brianna West, 6-2 sophomore middleblocker Caroline Boone, and 6-1sophomore hitter Carlie Smith.

The team’s recruiting class includes junior college transfers Shelby Schindler, a 6-1 middleblocker, and Jes-sica Amador, a 5-7 libero and defensive specialist; Claflin University transfer Chiquita Rivers, a 5-10 hitter; andfreshmen Meagan Fajman (6-1 outside hitter) and Sarah Cushing (5-9 setter).

“Expectations are high coming off last year’s successes,” said MacDonald. “Our greatest challenge is ourlarge percentage of newcomers. We graduated a great group of seniors last season and now a new core ofplayers must take on bigger roles. We want the incoming class to understand that they may be new to thejersey, but we are all wearing the same jersey. We have been working hard on team chemistry. This includeshow the team gets along off the floor, but also how they interact on thecourt, especially on passing and setting.” FMU was tabbed for third in thePBC pre-season coaches’ poll.

“Defense should be a major key for this squad. We have also beenworking to pick up our tempo on the passing side. Practice results areimportant, but the players are ready to see how that translates to actualgame action.

“We are looking for a big year from Alexzandra, who was second on thesquad in kills last year as a sophomore. Carlie has moved from themiddle to the right side and has excelled in practice, while Sloane returnsfor her fourth season and will look to get a chance to lead us from thesetter position.” Shank made four starts in 2013. “We are also excitedabout the play of Jessica on the defensive side of the net.”

In 2013, FMU ranked among the top 45 percent of all Division II institutionsin every one of the seven team statistical categories. Heading thoseaccomplishments was the Patriots ranking 43rd nationally in service acesper set (1.74), 52nd in won-loss percentage (.700), and 87th in assistsper set (11.66). In each of those categories, FMU ranked second amongPBC schools.

The Patriots’ 2014 schedule includes 14 home dates among the squad’s28 matches. In eight seasons at Francis Marion, MacDonald owns a 139-113 record, while his career mark stands at 188-162.
