CENTERPIECE FABRICS - Step IThe Centerpiece is made up of twelve wedges. Each 30 degree wedge is comprised of 13 rows of different fabics that grade from coral to dark violet with accent squares in the middle of each row.Though it looks complex, piecing the centerpiece is quite simple. Cutting and labeling the patches in an orderly fashion will make for more seamless piecing.

Follow these guidelines to cut the fabrics in Step I Note: In order to maximixe the block’s stability, patches are cut so that the length of the patch is follows the grain of the fabric. 1. From WOF, cut (1) strip from each fabric. The length of the strip is given below, and will vary by row. 2. Cut off selvage.3. Cut in half at fold.4. Set 1 strip aside for Step II. 5. From one strip, cross-cut (12) 1 1/2 in. wide patches. Stack, label and set aside. 6. Stack & label patches sequencially by Row (1 - 13). Fabrics are labeled below.

CENTERPIECE TRIANGLES - FOUNDATION PIECE TEMPLATES A & B The foundation pieced Triangles are the anchors of the Centerpiece. Foundation piecing allows you to control bias and to be ac-curate when using smaller pieces or odd shapes. The 30 degree Centerpiece wedges begin by sewing patches to the foundation pieced triangles starting from the outside and moving toward the center. Patch colors grade inward from dark to light.

The finished Half-Square Triangle consists of (4) foundation pieced wedges - Templates A (Left & Right), and B (Left & Right), as shown in (diagram 3).Follow these guidelines to cut fabrics for Templates A (L & R) & B (L & R).1. From WOF, cut the number of strips required from each fabric below. 2. The width of the strip will vary by row. 3. Cut off selvage.4. Cross-cut (24) patches at the lengths given below. Patches are slightly oversized to ensure correct placement and coverage.5. Stack & label patches sequencially by Template (A or B) and Row (1 - 11). Fabrics are labeled below.Note: Templates A-L & A-R have of 11 rows, while Templates B-L & B-R have only 9.

PART I - FOUNDATION PIECE CENTERPIECE TRIANGLES - Please read carefully before you begin

Paper Piece Foundations A & B are found on pages (16 & 17). The foundations are designed to be used with EQ Print-able Foundation Sheets™ or Simple Foundations Translucent Vellum Paper™. Because of their translucent quality, you can to see your patches through the foundation material, which makes it easier to see your work while piecing. Both products tear away cleanly. EQ Printables Foundation™ Sheets can also be left in the quilt for added stability. The nonwoven material will soften when laundered.

Follow these guidelines to make the Centerpiece Triangles with Templates A & B1. Print 12 copies of Templates A (Left & Right) & B (Left & Right). Print at full size; do not scale. 2. Seperate left and right templates. Carefully trim around the patterns on the sewing line. The fabric stips are

oversized to ensure complete coverage. Units will be sized to a perfect 1/4 seam allowance after all piecing is complete.

3. The pieces are numbered in the order inwhich they appear from kiwi green in position 1, to dark blue in position 11, (Violet/Teal in position 9 for Template B).

4. Add fabrics to the foundation in sequencial order. Notice that the numbers appear differently on the left and right templates so that the seams alterntate direction. This makes nesting seams much easier when piecing sections to form the half-square triangle. The triangle will lay flat when it is pressed after piecing is complete.

5. The starting position is marked on all templatesFoundation Piecing Knowledge of foundation piecing is assumed. This pattern does no include piecing instructions. Please note: if you are using the foundation materials listed, you will place fabrics on the printed side of the templates and sew on the back side. You will be able to see the sewing lines through the foudation material. If you are not using the foundation materials listed, you will place the fab-rics on the blank side of the templates and sew on the printed side. This will reverse the direction of the sections; therefore, left sections become right sections, and vis versa. In either case, make (12) of each section.Creating a perfect 1/4 seam allowance: Using a 1/4” foot, sew around each unit by placing your 1/4” guide right against the edge of the template. Sew around the entire unit. Trim off access fabric by cutting on the seam that you just made, which is ex-actly 1/4” away from the edge of the template. This assures an perfect 1/4” seam allowance. You may also use an “Add-a-Qurter” ruler to mark and trim 1/4” around the edge of the template. If using vellum foundation, remove paper at this time.Joining Sections 1. Join A units together at center seam. Sew B units to ether side, as shown in (diagram 5). Trim to 1/4 in. Press seams open.2. Square Half Square Triangles to 10 1/2 in. at short ends as shown in (diagram 6). The long side of triangle will measure 14 1/2 in. with seam allowances.

PART II - PIECING WEDGES for CENTERPIECEThe Centerpiece Wedge is built from the outside (large end) toward the center with the Pieced Half-Square Triangle as the anchor. The Centerpiece Wedges will tend to warp when excessive pressure is placed on the seams during construction. Therefore, refrain from pressing seams with an iron until the block is completely pieced.

Finger press seams open. Though matching seams may be more challenging during quilt assembly, the overall surface will be flatter.

Though you may join patches by chain stitching, please make 1 wedge as a model for the others.

1. Begin with a Half-square Triangle in front of you. 2. Place unaccented patch 1 on top of the triangle, right sides

together as shown in (diagram 7). 3. Begin sewing from the outer edge toward the center, reinforc-

ing at beginning and end.4. Finger press seam open. 5. Place accented patch 1-A (Accent) on top of the right side

of the triangle, right sides together, as shown in (diagram 8). Match raw edges of patches 1.

6. Match seamline and pin to secure. If the top edge and seam-lines do not match, match only the seamlines.

7. Begin sewing from the center toward the outer edge, rein-forcing at beginning and end.

8. The outer edge will be uneven. The Centerpiece Wedge will be sized after piecing is complete.

9. Continue building the wedge in the same manner as above, alternating plain and accented patches from rows 2 - 13 on opposite sides of the Half-Square Triangle, as shown in (dia-gram 10).

8

10 in.

The Centerpiece is made up of (12) 30 degree wedges. To ensure that the wedges are 30 degree angles, make a tem-plate to size the Centerpiece Wedge, as shown in (diagram 11). You may choose to make a paper template first. You will want to use a template that you can see through to center the template correctly on the pieced wedge.1. Tape (3) sheets of Template Plastic together along the long side of the sheet. Tape both sides of the plastic to secure. 2. With a ruler, draw a 26 1/2 in. line down the center of the Template Plastic. From the top of the center line, measure and mark 7 1/4 in. to the left and right of the center line. 3. Draw a line across the top from left mark to the right. 4. From the top of the center line, measure and mark 7 1/4 in. down for the center point of the half-square triangle. 5. With a ruler, draw a line from the center point to the left and right points to complete the half-square triangle.6. From the bottom of the center line, use a protractor to mark 15 degrees to the left and right of the center line. 7. Draw a line from the top to the center point to make a 30 degree wedge.8. Cut out the Plastic Template.

9. To minimize distortion, turn the wedge wrong side facing up & press a 1 1/2 in. x 20 in. strip of featherweight interfacing on top of the Accent Squares, as shown in (diagram 14).10. Place the Plastic Template on top of a pieced wedge, aligning the center line with the center seam of the half-square triangle and the center of the Accent Squares.11. Use a Gel Pen or Fabric marker to draw a line around the template.12. Sew a scant 1/8 in. seam just inside the cutting line just drawn to stabilize the edge of the wedge.13. Cut the pieced wedge along the drawn cutting line, as shown in (diagram 13).14. Repeat steps 9 through 14 to size all 12 wedges.

PART III - JOIN WEDGES for CENTERPIECEIt could be very challenging to join 12 wedges seamlessly in the middle of the quilt. Joined in the conventional way would create bulk and the likelihood of matching 12 seams precisely would be slim. In order to reduce the bulk and increase precision, you will turn 12 seams into 6. Follow these steps too minimize bulk in the center of the quilt:1. From left over Template Plastic, mark & cut the 60 degree tri-

angle (Template F, pg. 21).2. Join wedges together in pairs so that you have (6) pairs of 2

wedges, as shown in (diagram 15).3. Finger press seams open. Do not press the Centerpiece with an

iron until completely pieced.4. Lay a pair of wedges on a flat surface, right side facing up, with

the center seam directly in front of you.5. With a ruler and rotary cutter, cut off the tip of the wedge pair

1/4 in. below the 1st Accent Square, as shown in (diagram 16).6. Sew a 3 in. x 4 in. rectangle from Fabric 13 ( BA-525), to the

newly cut end of the wedge pair. The seam should end at the lower point of the 1st Accent Square.

7. Place Template F on top of wedge pair. Align the center line with the center seam, and top seam line with wedge seam.

8. Draw cutting line onto wedge from Template F, as shown in (diagram 17).

9. Cut out along cutting line to re-size the wedge pair.10. Repeat steps above for all (6) wedge pairs.

10

1. Join two Wedge pairs together, as shown in (diagram 19), matching and pinning seams at the seamline.

2. Sew seam from the center toward the outer edge, rein-forcing at beginning and end.

3. Finger press seam open.4. Join 3rd Wedge pair to the unit above, as shown in (dia-

gram 20), matching and pinning seams at the seamline.5. Start the seam at the center and sew toward the outer

edge, reinforcing at beginning and end.6. Finger press seam open.7. Repeat steps 1-6 for remaining 3 Wedge pairs to create

(2) halves of the Centerpiece.8. Adjust seams as needed to ensure that center edges

are straight without bowing, as shown in (diagram 21).9. Join 2 halves together, matching and pinning seams

at the seamline. Pin from the center outward in both directions.

10. Sew 1 side together at a time, beginning in the center.11. Check that seams match and center seamline is

straight.12. Make adjustments if necessary.13. Press all seams open with an iron.14. Trim the outer edge of the Centerpiece 1/4 in. from the

solid line of the half-square triangle.

PART IV - FOUNDATION PIECE SHAPED CORNER UNITS & JOIN CORNER SECTIONS

11

1. Each Shaped Corner is constructed of 6 pieces. The left units (diagram 23) mirror the right units.

2. Templates C, D & E are found on pages 18 - 21. Note that C-L & C-R are split to fit on the page. Match the red registration marks together and tape securely. If you plan to leave the foundation in the quilt, carfully sew down the registration lines to secure, and remove the tape. This is not necessary if you are using paper or vellum foundations.

3. Piece the Shaped Corner units C, D & E in the same manner as the Half-Square Triangles A & B (page 6).

4. Once units are completed, trim a perfect 1/4” seam allowance as you did perviously with units A & B. If you are using paper or vellum foundations, you may remove the foundation at this time.

5. Join left units (L-C, L-D & L-E) together to make the left Shaped Corner section. Match and pin seams at the seamlines.

6. Press seams open, as shown in (diagram 24).7. Repeat process to make right Shaped Corner sections.8. Clean up the the inner edge of the each Shaped Cor-

ner section to a perfect 1/4 “ beyond the edge of the template, if necessary. You should only need to clean up the line; you’ve already created a perfect 1/4” seam allowance in step 4.

PART V - JOIN CORNERS to CENTERPIECEThe Shaped Corner sections are sewn to the Centerpiece before they are joined together, making it easier to turn the multi-sided Centerpiece into a square.

1. For correct placement of the Shaped Corners, refer to the quilt outline, (page 15) . The Centerpiece is positioned so that the Shaped Corners set the Centerpiece “on point.”

2. Sew 1 corner at a time.3. Begin with the right corner section. Join section to the quilt,

matching and pinning the seams before sewing, as shown in (diagram 26).

4. Begin sewing 1/4 in. from the center, reinforcing at beginning and end, as shown in (diagram 25).

5. Join the left corner section to the quilt, matching and pinning seams before sewing.

6. Begin sewing from the center in the same stitch as the right corner. Sew to outer edge, reinforcing at beginning and end.

7. Press both seams toward the outer edge of the quilt.8. Beginning in the center, join the left and right Corner sections,

matching and pinning seams before sewing, as shown in (dia-gram 27). Reinforce at beginning and end.

9. Press seam open. Check the intersections to ensure that they match as shown below.

13

1. Using ¼” seam allowance, sew Border 1 strips to Border 2 strips.2. Press seam open.3. Fold a Large Corner Triangle in half along the outer edge to find the

center. Mark with a pin. 4. Fold the a Border Unit in half to find the center. Mark with a pin.5. Match center positions of the Corner Triangle and the Border Unit. Pin

outward in both directions. Using a 1/4 in. seam, sew the Outer Bor-der strip to one side of the Corner Triangle, as shown in (diagram 31), starting and stopping ¼” from the ends and backstitching to secure, as shown in (diagram 32).

6. Sew another Border unit to the other side of the Corner Triangle as in steps 2-4.

7. Press seam allowances toward the border.8. Working on the ironing board, lay one corner out flat with right side

facing up. One end of the border strip should overlap the other.9. Double check that the strips are positioned correctly by placing a bias

square ruler over the corner – the edges of the border strips should line up with the edges of the ruler.

10. Fold the top border strip (top layer) under so that the right sides of the two border strips are facing one another – creating a 45 degree angle. Slide the top border strip out towards the end of the strip until the point of the 45 degree angle is at the corner of the quilt top.

11. Press to crease fabric.12. To ensure an accurate finished corner, lay a bias square ruler over the

pressed corner.13. The printed diagonal line on the ruler should follow the pressed fold.

The outside edge of the ruler should follow the outside edges of the border fabric. If these don’t all line up, make some adjustments, re-press and recheck with the ruler.
