The fastest-growing segments include business travelers, international tourists, and cruise passengers -- who often have higher expectations about service and lower tolerance for delay. Statewide WorkshopFlorida's Future Statewide CorridorsFloridas transportation system plays multiple functions -- serving both trips internal to the state as well trips to and from our major international and domestic trading partners, whether they are other states or other nations.This map illustrates the relative size of each type of freight flow. In 1998 (the most recent commodity flow data purchased by the Department at a disaggregated level) , Floridas domestic and international freight flows were as follows: 575 million tons moving within the state-- that is, originated and terminated in Florida;200 million tons moving from other states or nations to Florida; and72 million tons moving from Florida to other state or nations.Notice the large imbalance between inbound and outbound shipments -- a consequence of Floridas large consuming population and relatively modest manufacturing sector. This has important implications for how the freight industry operates, since many trucks and rail cars leave Florida empty.Also notice the different roles played by each mode in moving this freight -- its clear that each mode is important to move goods to market. This is true even for air cargo, which while a small percentage on a volume basis would be much more significant if we looked at these statistics by value. The value of international trade moving to and from Florida -- both exports and imports -- doubled over the past decade to $73 billion, and is expected to double again over the next 15 years. In contrast to many states, where the majority of international trade moves over the surface transportation system to Canada or Mexico, the overwhelming share of Floridas trade moves to and from Latin America and the Caribbean, through the states seaports and airports. Thus most of these movements are intermodal in nature and require a connection to the highway or rail system.The Western Hemisphere dominates state exports. Latin America and the Caribbean countries have become one of Floridas largest international partners. Sixty one percent of Floridas exports go to this region.

    Statewide WorkshopFlorida's Future Statewide CorridorsFDOT is working with the Florida Transportation Commission to identify statewide transportation corridors that will be significantly improved or developed over the next 50 years. Through a series of parallel initiatives, the Department and the Commission will work with other statewide, regional, and local partners to identify, assess, and expedite promising opportunities including the following: development of new statewide corridors (joint Department and Commission effort major enhancements to existing statewide corridors, including re-use of the corridor to create exclusive-use lanes for trucks, transit vehicles, or other types of trips; and expanded freight and passenger rail service in or near existing corridor right-of-way.These statewide corridor activities should be coordinated with the planning and development of existing and new regional corridors, which may serve as one segment of these statewide corridors.     Statewide WorkshopFlorida's Future Statewide CorridorsThis map shows existing corridors where we are considering re-use options.These include the corridors served by all of our current Interstate highways, such as I-95, I-75, I-4, and I-10. These Interstates connect the areas that are most developed today. We plan to examine opportunities to introduce special-use lanes or modal options with these specific Interstate facilities, but also to coordinate planning for these Interstates with nearby multimodal corridors. For example, solutions for improving mobility along the Atlantic Coast in Southeast Florida must consider US 1 and the CSX and FEC lines in addition to I-95.The map also includes US 27 from Miami to Lake County. Given the high volumes of trucks along US 27, there may be opportunities for dedicated truck lanes.
